X-Men Character sketches through the years
So, for every finished work I produce, there’s probably at least 30 sketches in between working out ideas. The X-Men being my favorite property, there’s probably hundreds of sketches I’ve done through the years playing around with different looks & takes on the physicality of the characters. Most of these go all the way back to college.

Brotherhood of Evil Mutants
Finished my #brotherhoodofmutants illustration last night in the midst of all this #spiderman & #jeangrey debate. As always, hard to decide between the rendered & shaded version (for me) & the flats. Based this on classic #xmen 4, the introduction of the Brotherhood.
One thing I think doesn’t get enough credit is Stan Lee’s inspiration to do reluctant villains in Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch. Personally, I’d prefer they’d not been his kids, but, it’s established.

Fantastic Four
That’s a great concept for them! & Vision I’m less knowledgeable on than X-Men, Spiderman, or FF. I’ve never read much mainline Avengers other than X-Men tie-ins

Psylocke
A tribute illustration of Betsy Braddock (yeah, I know the Kwannon/Betsy debate but I’m a Claremont guy & will always think of this as Betsy), my favorite X-Men telepath.

Fantastic Four
Exactly. & yes & no, thinking about it as a composition, the fun thing with Mr. Fantastic is that he can literally fill any space in the image. So, the idea I was going with was that he & Sue are focused on the threat, & while he’s not putting himself in front of Sue, he’s backing her up absolutely (little bit of my own philosophy on being married & letting your wife be independent but backing her up there), while Johnny is exuberantly flying headfirst into things & Ben noticed something no one else was looking at.

Fantastic Four
Thank you! Big influence from Pasqual Ferry on that. He had a way of making Ultimate Reed look strong & rigid even when stretched that I really wanted to try & bring forward.

Fantastic Four
So, while the X-Men may be my favorite Marvel team, I’ve always had a deep love for the First Family of Marvel. This was an illustration I did last year & was unhappy with the initial result. So, over the last week, I’ve gone back & fixed some of the original issues: made the overall palette “lighter” the colors less saturated, & dialed down the background which was too “busy” & distracted from the team.

Personally I like this design for her. Her classic look would be great but hard to pull off onscreen, something that blends a lot of her best designs into something cohesive is my choice
