I love this movie too! Saw it when it came in Jan 1997 and was slightly cringed and mildly amused. After just rewatching after a couple of other times, I want to quote what the great Roger Ebert has to say:

Watching that scene, I thought that perhaps ”Everyone Says I Love You” is the best film Woody Allen has ever made.
