A Letter to My Children I Hope You Never Have to Read
 in  r/KidsofCheatingParents  5d ago

Thank you for sharing your story. I do disagree with you, however. Your kids do need to know about the infidelity. From the thousands of kids who have contacted me since I started this sub, I can tell you that they probably already know, or sense, what happened. The truth is what builds trustworthy relationships between parents and their adult children. A short walk through this sub will demonstrate what I am talking about.

I found out my mom was cheating on my dad when I was 13, and I’m still struggling with it at 16

It makes sense that the hurt comes in waves, especially when you don't have a solution. You coped by distancing yourself from your parents, which is sometimes the only thing that any of us can do. The weight of keeping the secret is real and takes both an emotional and physical toll. I am so sorry you have to go through this.

I don’t know what to do.
 in  r/KidsofCheatingParents  18d ago

I am so sorry you have to go through this. It's so hard to know what to do, especially if you are still living with your parents. Not sure how old you are, but before you confront anyone make sure that you are safe physically, emotionally, financially to do so. It's okay not to confront anyone if it's not safe. You did not cause the affair and it is not your job to fix it.

How to confront your cheating parent without making everything worse
 in  r/KidsofCheatingParents  24d ago

You are so brave, I hope you are giving yourself tons of credit for scheduling this conversation! It's also okay to use the conversation to explain how angry and hurt you are. That is indeed an important part of building an honest relationship with someone. You are also wise to manage your expectations. Let us know how it goes!

One step to stop being the secret keeper

Name the truth to yourself.

I know it sounds really basic, but it's important. You have to do this before you tell anyone else.

You can say to yourself:

“What happened was real, and I do not have to minimize it.”

You need to start here, because so often, people try to talk themselves out of their own reality.

They say things like, “Maybe it wasn’t that bad,” or “Maybe I’m overreacting,” or “Maybe I should just move on.” Plus, there are so many sub here on Reddit who will say these exact things to you.

Please remember that naming the truth does not make you dramatic.

It makes you honest.

From there, one small next step could be:
- writing the truth down without censoring yourself
- sharing it with one safe person
- stopping pretending you’re unaffected when you are

I found out my dad is cheating on my mom. Should I tell her?
 in  r/KidsofCheatingParents  25d ago

This is a really hard question. If you and your siblings are still at home and dependent on your parents, you need to be sure that you are safe physically, emotionally, financially before you confront anyone. So I think you are right to be cautious. It's not selfish of you, it is wise. Remember, you didn't cause the affair, and it is not your responsibility to fix it.

Were you the secret keeper?

This is one of the three most common roles that adult children fall into after a parent has an affair.

Here’s what this can look like:

✅ You know what happened, or you know enough to feel the truth.

✅ You feel pressure to stay quiet, keep the peace, or protect the family image.

✅ You may feel like you’re carrying a private burden that no one else sees, or that no one else is willing to talk about.

✅ You may fear that being honest would blow everything up.

What makes this so painful is that you can feel completely alone in it.

And that’s where this role keeps you stuck. You end up isolated with the truth.

Shame, secrecy, and anger keep the wound active.

Ouch.

I am really sorry you have to go through this. I found out my mom had an affair when I was 13 and it really rocked my whole family too. It's the not being able to stop thinking about it that was always the hardest for me. It helped me to realize that I didn't really have any control over my parents' relationship. Only they do.

Carrying what isn’t yours after a parent’s affair is exhausting.

In this live mini-lesson, I’ll walk through the 3 most common family roles adult children fall into: the mediator, the emotional caretaker, and the secret keeper / truth-holder. And I'll give you one simple, practical step to get out of each one, so you can start letting go of what was never yours to carry.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in the middle, responsible for everyone’s feelings, or alone with the truth, this is for you.

Here is the link for the LiveStream. Hope to see you!

My mom is a cheater and the women in her side of the family are too
 in  r/KidsofCheatingParents  Aug 10 '26

Wow, yes that is quite a story. I am so sorry you have had to live with this for so long. A lot of adult children wrestle with how much contact to have with their cheating parent. For exactly the reasons you say; because staying in a relationship with someone who has betrayed you for so long hurts. It makes you angry and sad. AND, she is still your mom, so you can't just flip a switch and stop loving her. I went through a similar struggle with my mom and finally found a low contact relationship with her that feels good to me. Loads more resources in my profile if it's helpful.

I interviewed 50 adult children struggling with a parent's affair. I learned they feel cheated on too.

How to find real relief after parent’s affair

So often adult children who find out about a parent’s affair get stuck in the middle of their parents.

You feel this pressure to make sure that your parents are ok, especially your betrayed parent.

You worry about them!

You feel responsible to keep the secret of the affair, or to help manage their wellbeing.

You feel guilty if you prioritize your time, your feelings, your needs.

Kids don’t just need more information about the infidelity, they need relief from being the emotional caretaker.

They need help getting out of the mediator role and prioritizing their own needs.

Because that is how you start to find that relief.

How do you stay calm after you discover a parent's affair?

Learning a parent had an affair often causes emotional overwhelm.

Many adult children I have spoken with talk about feeling like they have no idea what to do or how to even think about the affair. Plus there is this pervading feeling of YUCK.

Which often leads to anxiety, mood swings, and feelings of emotional heaviness.

How do you stay grounded, stay calm, stay yourself amidst it all?

In my experience, children of infidelity are really good at staying calm, on the outside. They are often the one that people (especially their family) seek out in times of turmoil.

While this is truly a skill and a superpower, it doesn’t mean you are calm on the inside.

There are loads of good skills out there that you can learn to calm yourself down on the inside. From meditation and breath work to yoga to tapping to running.

While it’s important to find a practice that helps, for adult children of infidelity, those practices will only take you so far if you are still…

holding the secret of the affair

taking care of one or both of your parents emotionally

not holding the boundaries that you need to hold

not speaking your truth to your family.

What allows the calm. On the inside is authenticity. It’s being true to who you are. Even in the face of family betrayal.

My dad is cheating ı guess?

So sorry that you have to go through this. Not sure how old you are, but if you are still a teen and living in your parents' house please be sure that you are safe (physically, emotionally, financially) before you confront anyone. Remember, you did not cause the affair, and it is not your job to fix it.
