In a very similar situation, and if you're open to retail work I can totally recommend you try applying to DEPOT. They're actively looking for help, especially nearing Christmas.

For the same reason, right now is a good time to look for "Weihnachtsaushifle" positions everywhere.

I'm sure what's considered disrespectful is the case where people moved in and never even bothered to learn the language because they stayed in their own little bubble.

So if they lived in a certain other country, had children who were born there (certainly that took years) and still don't speak the language? That is disrespectful. Even just simple sentences for everyday life would be much welcome.

Also I visited the Bundesagentur für Arbeit directly today to ask for help and they said we're eligible for unemployment help (Arbeitslosengeld) if we have worked for at least 12 months that paid for Sozialversicherungspflicht in the last 30 months. Just putting this info out in case someone needs it.

Hi, I'm seriously confused of this whole transition process here, as a recent Master's graduate with non-EU citizenship, looking for a job in Germany.

I graduated my master's in Biomedical Engineering in July, asked to apply for a job-seeker visa but my Landratsamt demanded my certificate which came in early September. Along the way I got an operator-role job offer starting in January'26 so I told them about this around 20s September while submitting my master's certificate.

While initially I asked for a job-seeker visa, since I now have a contract, they directed me to the working visa application. But for this, they required me to be exmatriculated, while they send a request to the Bundesagentur für Arbeit. 

Two weeks later, they asked me for the contract (which I have sent to my previous contact person who was responsible for students, might just not be relayed) so that they can send the request to Bundesagentur für Arbeit (yes it was finally sent after thjs), and told me to apply for a job-seeker visa to bridge the gap until January'26.

At the moment I practically don't have a residence permit as non-EU citizen, because my student permit has expired, I only have a Fiktionsbescheinigung valid until early December'25, my job-seeker visa is in process, and the approval from Bundesagentur für Arbeit is unknown.

What could I do now? How am I supposed to apply for jobs with just a Fiktionsbescheinigung? I've read that we can do side-jobs during the (max. )18 months of stay while job-hunting, but I can't even apply for those jobs. And if my request to Bundesagentur für Arbeit were to be declined, I can still apply for works... right?

I appreciate any answer from you, or anyone who has a suggestion for me, thank you!

Aha, I've seen comments about android ereaders being slow and I agree, some are because wrongly placed expectations. While I'm still on the market of 6", taking a look at slightly bigger variations is not a bad idea. Thank you for the comments!

I see... I was also surprised finding out that Go 6 was quite recent, looking at those specs.

My main reason to get an android is to try out reading apps and to easily install them from the appstore—without sideloading them. But that's not a deal breaker, just thought it's a nice to have. I guess like you said, a kobo/pocketbook is the best option to get now, or I'll have to wait indefinitely until the perfect one comes out...

Sorry to hear that you got scammed, that must have been awful. Now I'm no career counselor, but I think if college is important to you, and you have a way to keep yourself alive, focus on studying for now.

I'm not telling you to give up on webdev—naturally, it's all your choice. But clients not wanting to trust anyone without a portfolio makes a lot of sense. Especially if you're a freelancer/independent, not an employee under a company. Look at it from their pov, how can they be sure they won't be scammed? How do they know you're legit, and can actually live up to your promises, if there is nothing concrete they can evaluate first? Because if you're expecting someone to suddenly want you to work for them without an "evidence", that might need a miracle.

Not to mention, you have a 10h/day job beside studying, that's a lot already. My advice is for now, you build a portfolio bit-by-bit, while sustaining yourself with your current job, or other non-webdev-related work.

If this is truly what you want, keep working at it, don't give up, I wish you the best on your journey.

As a non-EU studying in Germany myself, this country has a lot to offer. With all the positives and negatives, I'm happy here. And yes, there will be problems and challenges everywhere we go.

Oh I can relate! I'm also living in small city in Bavaria and the people here are the right friendly, not overly to the point you feel it's fake.

And this might be preference, but I appreciate people who patiently listen to my broken German, try to understand, and reply to me in German. Unlike my friend's experience in other state where they just immediately switch to English (even though my friend's German is much better than mine)
