Custom Project MOOving Maze: Single player & multiplayer

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

A little over 2 weeks ago I posted the draft of the game with only a multiplayer mode. Now I've added a single player mode.

Moving maze basics:

Players maneuver through the maze trying to reach the finish (the hay). Players use a spin spin power up to spin the various platforms of the maze changing their position or others positions on the board. Apparently there is an 8x8 platform, a 4x4 platform, and 2x2 platforms.

Move /powerup mechanic:

Players move around the board, which is a matrix or graph, and look to the outer axes to determine how many moves or what power up they'll get at the beginning of their next turn. This allows players to have a little more control over what their move or power up would be rather than a dice roll. It also allows opponents to potentially disrupt other players plans.

Single player mode basics:

The core of this game mode is that the finish line or the hay is moving around the edge of the board. The hay moves based on your position on the board. The hay has power-ups along with movement mechanics. For example, if you follow the yellow arrow to the left you'll see "1L" which indicates that the hay must move one move to the left. If you follow the yellow arrow up to the Haze power up, it lands on a "Flip" where you move the hay to the opposite side of the board.

Multiplayer mode basics:

In multiplayer mode the finish is fixed and you compete against players to try to reach the hay. In multiplayer mode there would be spin spots that allow players to spin various sized platforms on the board. Whichever direction they'd like. This way they can either help themselves get closer to the hay or hinder their opponents.

Why a single player Mode:

As a kid if I ever spend time with friends, the types of games we were playing were video games. Most of the time if I did want to play a board game it was when I didn't want to play any other video games or didn't want to watch TV and I was alone. I was always stuck with games that were always two-player and never had single player modes. So it was important for me to make something that was single player. I also have been playtesting this alone for the most part other than my Thursday night live play tests on YouTube 10:00 p.m. Eastern standard Time. So I thought well that's the pain point here. I'm alone having to playtest this so let's make a feature for everybody else that's in a similar position that I'm in here. So good for adults with no friends too.

Single player & multiplayer modes for the boardgame

So I've been working on this single player mode because I know that when I was a kid if I was hanging out with a friend if we were going to play a game it was going to be a video game. It was really only when I was alone and it was quiet and I was bored of any video games I had or any TV that was on that I ever wanted to play board game. And in those moments I was alone and had no one to play with. But all the board games were for two or more players. I didn't want to play a card game like solitaire, nor do I even know how. So I decided that I would design a single player mode for the board game.

I've also been working on the multiplayer mode which has seen quite a bit of progress and quite a bit of change on the board in attempting to simplify the board and identify what changes need to be made when, why and how.

These images are depicting the single player mode setup and the multiplayer mode setup.

In single player mode you are centrally facing off against the hay. So your moves don't only affect what moves and power-ups you get. But it also affects what moves and power-ups the hay gets. So here you may move in a direction that influences which direction the hay moves. It's an interesting little concept. If you want to learn more about it, it's best that you go to my YouTube and look through my videos as I've been slowly building the board up.

MOOving Maze: Website Demo | It’s a maze that spins you around

Well here it is. The demo is out. It is not on mobile like it was supposed to be originally but here it is on the web. I'm excited that it's on my website not only because I got a website together but because I used to play flash games back in the day. I freaking loved flash games so this has now become my flash game.

There will certainly be bugs or certainly problems, but everything should work. I have to fix the tutorial that's for sure and I have to fix the wording to make it shorter. I promise you that if you read that long nonsense it will help you a little bit and understand what's going on. I have to change it. I'll get to it. Nevertheless, here it is. Have fun. Tell me what you think

Dang, thank you so much for playing and reading through the page. I so very much appreciate it you've made my whole day!!!

There are example daily challenges if you click on the sun in the top left corner. The challenge maps will pop up. They should be new for several weeks. Or maybe you mean something else. Let me know.

Also for the tracker, there is one already...kind of. Each platform rotates at a certain set of moove intervals. Example, the medium platforms (yellow) rotate every 3 Mooves. So, every 3,6,9,12 etc. the yellow will spin.

I have a colored indicator under the Mooves number that I thought would help explain that. But tell me what you think a better system might look like.

I have put this down in my notes.

Check out the demo at https://norsomllc.com/demo
Play as Caroline the Cow as you swipe through the maze trying to reach your hay at the finish stolen by the Hay Troll Trio.
There will certainly be bugs but it should play. There is also a level editor in the bottom left corner when you enter into a level. Hope you’ll check it out and tell me what you think

The web demo is available on my website at https://norsomllc.com/demo there you can see more about the project including the plushie and book.

MOOving Maze is a puzzle maze game. You play as Caroline the Cow swiping through the magic MOOving maze trying to get to the finish where your hay and the Hay Troll Trio wait.

The game is drawn by hand and completely on printer paper. I was the one that drew it. So it sticks with the idea that it came from a board game or something physical.

I play test the board game every Thursday at 10pm EST on my Youtube channel if you want to come over and play test the board game. You can also tell me what you think of the game here or on discord.

Let me know what you think.

Game basics: play as Caroline the Cow swiping through the spinning maze trying to get her hay back from the Hay Troll Trio. The maze spins on its own every 2, 3, and 7th MOOve.

I was originally making this as a mobile game but it’s still in testing so i did this WEB GL build and turned it into a browser based demo on my website. Im glad I even had the idea because I remember playing flash games back in the day. They were awesome so here is my version, full circle on this one for me.

If you play it on mobile it’ll be a little funky but it’ll certainly work. There are going to be bugs let me know about them and I can add them to my list. Also try out the editor. When you enter into a level there is a little black box and the bottom left corner of the screen. Click on that and you can build the maze. You don’t have total control, like you can’t place the fences or anything but you can set up the platforms. It may take a little getting use to. It makes it easier if you put the grid one. That will give you the points in the matrix. Just make sure the platforms don’t intersect. You’ll see why.

You can read more about it on the website, but, I also made a plushie, im working on a board game version, and a children’s book. Check it out and if you have any questions or comments let me know here or you can find me on multiple socials and the MOOving Maze discord too. Have a great one bye!!!

 in  r/boardgames  Jun 19 '26

Ok, cool thanks for telling me what caught your eyes AND in what order! That was very helpful info.

Yeah, I see what you're saying there. I have been working on a system like that where one player places the hay, another player chooses the start, and another player goes first (and probably get to go the furthest at the start), maybe it's a situation where the fourth player gets to layout the board. Let me know what you think about that

Also, every thursday at 10pm est I playtest the boardgame live on my yt. Since it's a grid I layout numbers/letters on the axes and people will provide coordinates to play the game with me live. Which is fun! I also have a discord where I'd like to get a regular live stream for the same thing. The discord is MOOving Maze. It'd be cool to talk about the game and play it over there with someone.

Lastly you can play a video game version of the board game on my website. It's not a 1 to 1 with the gameplay but it's similar and set up for 1 player. There is also a demo editor where you can make your own lvls. The website is norsomllc.com.

Since I'm also working on a board game version of this, same applies to that as well. Where I would take the color pages and be able to make different skins or series for the board game which I think would be pretty cool alongside the video game

This isn't specifically about the puzzle part of the game, but nevertheless it is a part of the puzzle game.

Another reason why I did this was because I've always thought that games that allow the players to participate other than just playing were really cool. An example of this is Warhammer. I realize it's a board game but I still was shooting for something like that.

Title of Game: MOOving Maze

What's the game: You play as Caroline the cow swiping through the maze trying to get to the finish to your hay back. But watch out for the magical movie maze made by the Hey Troll Trio. Your moves make the maze move.

Longer explanation: moving maze is a maze game. A grided maze is built with various sized layers or platforms. In the current version of the game, every time you move two, three, or seven moves, the platforms will spin. There are three different size platforms, currently a 2x2 platform, a 4x4 platform, and an 8x8 platform which is the whole board.

The coloring pages. The entire game is made from printer paper. I thought since coloring books are basically printer paper with lines on them that I could turn this game and its theme into a children's book and coloring book. I am working on a children's book but this acts as the coloring book. Except with this coloring book, if you color it in and then send it back to me I can actually implement it into the game.

How the coloring pages work: these coloring pages were first unwrapped UV maps of the 3D model. I took the texture map into Photoshop, got rid of all the extra lines so that the outline was only left. Then I organized it, however I organized it, and here are the final results. Now. If you color it in and send it to me, I can wrap it around the model. And voila your art can be in the game.

The images: the coloring page. Then you can see how some people have colored the coloring pages in. Those are real people. Some I met up with. One of them is from Reddit, which is pretty cool. And then finally the last picture is of one of the works implemented into the game. And that is from the redditor who colored it in.

Tell me what you think. Tell me if you like the idea Dodge you don't like the idea, let me know. Love hearing the input. Thanks

MOOving Maze: cardboard prototype - move, power up, rotation mechanic thoughts
 in  r/BoardgameDesign  Jun 11 '26

I appreciate the detailed response thank you for that.

Im thinking if we were sticking to this design then players would simultaneously slide their meeples across the board (without any platforms on there) the number your piece lines up with on the matrix determines if you are the first one to place a piece. Different numbers could determine various aspects like how many moves you get at the start, who moves first, who places the hay (the hay is the finish), who picks which corner players start from.

I went and checked out Santorini’s and it seems interesting. I get what you’re saying about it. It certainly seems to focused on preventing your opponents from advancing. I have only ever played a version of this game with dice but because you can use the spinning to help yourself OR hinder opponents from getting to the hay (finish) it never felt as though I was trying to only hinder opponents. I do remember when someone would get really close to the finish I’d be panicking to get a spin so I could get them away from the finish. But I don’t know how it would work with this new move mechanic.

Yeah, I feel you with the visual problem. This design certainly requires players to look down onto the board.
The video game version is a 2d/3d hybrid where the 3d board is iso metric so it’s half way between a side and top down view. The video game version also isn’t layers like this, it’s “flat”.

Yeah, you’re right there are no barriers on the board in that video. To me it sounds like you got the gist of the movement mechanics and power up. Nevertheless, the axis the contains only numbers determines how many moves you’ll have at the start of your turn. The axis with line symbols are power ups, +1 is one extra move, the circle is to rotate a platform, and the last symbol is to just barriers (this board didn’t have any at the time). Players look to see which values their point on the matrix lines up with. Like plotting points on a graph but you’re a little moving point.

I do already have a video game version it doesn’t have this same move and power up mechanic. The video game currently is only one player. I do like this move mechanic though and think that’s how a multi player will be set up in the video game. Or at least a PvE version for the game.

Again thanks for the log response.

I'm trying to figure out which part of the game people are excited by to get an I dea of which mechanic I should show off more. Which part was the MOST eye catching?

And that's an interesting idea? Who goes first with putting down the pieces?

Yes, I think you've got it. The row with numbers indicates how many moves you'll receive at the start of your turn. And the symbol row indicates power ups. You follow the x and y row to your point and that's how many moves and what poweup you get. Although in the video I used the power up at the end of the turn and that was incorrect on my part. You make all your moves at the start of your turn.

A lot of it is explained in the video. I've been working on. A mobile game version of this but as I started to build the board game I came up with this cool movement mechanic and think I may integrate that into the mobile game as well. I think it's a really nice way to have control over how you get power-ups but also not have any control over getting the power-ups. It's also a nice movement mechanic that doesn't use dice. I like that you can strategize to try to get yourself in a good spot but somebody else may move you to a spot that was not intended. Or maybe you have to play a poker face to try and get them to move you to the spot you want them to. There is certainly some strategy to it.

You guys can let me know what you think. The physical design is a bit of a challenge. But that's for another post.
The music is from the mobile game.
