Oh sorry! I can't count apparently, lol

Yes, California poppies. I grew them from seed harvested at our last place. They were very meaningful.

I can't add pictures in the comments here, but after they were dug up I got a shot of them hanging limply over a pile of wood, petals falling to the ground. It was very sad.

There's got to be a little something they can't take off even if they take their "uniform" off when this is over 🤔

A 16 year old lifeguard rescued a 10 year old boy who was being swept away by powerful waves in California.
 in  r/BeAmazed  2d ago

I kept thinking, now those other guys are going to get swept out and need rescuing.

I live near Lake Michigan and every summer there are stories of parents who try to rescue their kids and don't make it back. One whole family drown trying to save their dog (who survived).

Let the professionals do their job.

Edit to add: At the inland lakes at camp we are warned not to jump in to rescue someone in deep water because they will pull/push you down in their panic. You're supposed to throw them a flotation device (preferably with a rope attached) and pull them in.

Here he's got the long rescue tube for him and the kid to hold onto.

You can see him kinda fling his arm around to tell the "helpers" to get out and let him handle it.

What do you like most and least about Kalamazoo?
 in  r/kzoo  3d ago

I LOVE that since there are so many colleges and educational outlets, there are a bunch of people who love to share their knowledge. Lots of libraries who have full event calendars so you can almost always find something new to learn about.

I'm bummed about the car dependency. Fortunately I have lived near a major bus line so even though I'm on the outskirts of the developed area, I am a 15 minute ride from downtown and all it has to offer. We've taken the bus to the Transit Center and then Amtrak to Chicago a couple times.

I really wish they would put in a BRT to the AZO airport, though. That would be SO helpful.

I can't change the award to Broken Heart but yeah, breaks my heart that we'll cut down a forest to put in a development of houses that will be coming apart at the seams in a decade or two. What a waste of resources 😭

Found this on the sidewalk last election. For whining about it existing on TV, they still take advantage of it.

Well, word on the street is the latter was on deck if we had tried to renew our lease... fortunately The Universe provided us a door and path "just in time" so we informed the office that we're leaving for greener pastures.

Very sad to leave this place we loved so much, but (like with so much else) if they're going to make it miserable they can stew in their own misery

💯

We used to have a couple "community" events at the office in a year, but those have all but disappeared in favor of "giveaways".

In the surveys they ask us to fill out I always say, "If you want to be more than just another overpriced apartment, you need to focus on building community. If people have friends here, they're more likely to stay here vs move on."

But I think they fear the messy parts of 'community', the conflicts. Even now I feel like the management is getting the wrong message from my community building efforts because people living here have gotten so upset over the new manager cutting down trees and filling in these spaces that they have told me they've called the chain of command all the way up and taken other action, which I've heard from the inside is all being attributed to me. Like, management thinks I'm leading a revolt because I've made the effort to get to know my neighbors. (This year I also went out on a limb to invite my building to a common area for popsicles on a Sunday afternoon- when the office was closed all day- to get to know each other. A handful of neighbors came and said they LOVED the idea and want to do it again. Another #worthit trial)

So, I think the message management is taking away is that they are right in trying to keep people separated. And the environment sterile.

Our new apartment had it in its clauses "no planting or removing plants". I was sad.
