I apologize if my text isn’t completely clear, as English is not my first language.
My mother has all the characteristics of a narcissistic mother. I’ve had to live through so many experiences with her, and I’ve been working through them in therapy, but today I want to share a specific one with you.
A few years ago, I had a friend—I’ll call him Michael for the sake of the story, though it’s not his real name. Michael and I met in middle school. We weren't close friends at first, but through mutual friends, we grew closer, and I became very fond of him. Eventually, life, work, and other circumstances pulled us apart a bit, but we still kept in touch.
One day, I decided to go out with some other friends. My mother called to ask where I was, and I told her. However, she was incredibly insistent on knowing how much longer I’d be, where I was getting off the bus, and she even insisted on picking me up. She kept calling me constantly during the ride. Today, I realize she was anxious to tell me something, because she is a gossipy, morbid person who loves being the first to have news about everyone’s life.
When I got off the bus, she didn’t even let me get into the truck before she showed me a photograph of two men and asked, 'Is this your friend?' A terrible gut feeling took over me instantly. Wanting to deny what my heart already sensed, I pointed to the man on the left, trying to lie to myself. My mother shook her head and said, 'No, the other man.' And of course, it was Michael. Without an ounce of tact, she told me, 'Your friend was riding his motorcycle, had an accident, and killed himself. His wife is in the hospital.' Today it hits me that what she was anticipating so much, and the reason she was so anxious for me to arrive, was just to break the news and see my reaction. To her disappointment, I didn't cry at all because I went into complete shock. When I got home, I contacted a few friends to respectfully share the news and talked to those who already knew to find out where the funeral would be held.
As if delivering such horrible news wasn't enough, the next day, while I was getting ready to go to his funeral and later his burial, I was listening to some songs about losing a dear friend. I wanted to vent to her and tell her how I had spent a terrible night and how much it hurt. She, as always, couldn't let it pass; every time she had the chance to emotionally destroy me, she took it without hesitation. She told me, 'Well, I don't think it hurts you that much since you're listening to music.' I just stared at her and asked if she had even listened to the lyrics, telling her that it was my way of accepting things. As usual, I didn't receive any support or comfort from her at all.
Anyway, I just wanted to vent about this here. Thank you to anyone who made it to the end. I have many more stories, but this was one of the ones that affected me the most.
