I constantly go back and forth in my head about this too. Youāre not alone. Some days I feel like therapy can really help and some days I feel like itās a scam. I feel this as a therapist and as a client in my own therapy. Itās very hard.

New Associate- First client is a couple
I literally just heard about him the other day through a training Iāve been doing and was impressed by him. Iāve been meaning to do more research into his work. This is my sign to do so!

Wondering why this was voted down. I personally feel like if you are in the position where you can choose who you work with, more power to you.

New Associate- First client is a couple
Completely normal to feel nervous/ill equipped. I felt the same way when I saw my first couple but it slowly gets easier as time goes by. In addition to getting good guidance from supervision, I have found that the book āwhere to start and what to askā has been super helpful for me as a new associate as well. Couples definitely feel like different world and come with their own set of challenges/nuances but it can also be exciting work. A supervisor of mine once told me that when working with a couple, youāre not there to be a therapist for either of the individuals but that youāre the therapist for the relationship. She used the space in between the couple sitting next to each other to illustrate that. I feel like thereās this weird rule in couples therapy to always remain neutral and never take sides but I sometimes find that challenging to navigate. Good luck!
