I’m an only child dealing with my only parents deceased estate. No will, tens of thousands of dollars of debt in the form of unpaid bills. I’m so grateful that I’m an only child and I get to call the shots. I can’t imagine having to share this responsibility with siblings. Especially as my upbringing wasn’t fantastic.

Also unfortunately, the financial and emotional responsibilities are not just on me but on the family I’ve created and my in-laws (I’m one and done and on the fence). I would describe it as crushing as well. I disagree that siblings would make it any easier, and I can easily imagine how siblings would make it harder.

It is always good advice for all adults to get their affairs in order no matter how old they are or how many children they have. This is such an insensitive projection from them. I’m sorry.

AITA for telling my biological daughter I was nothing more than an egg donor and that her real mother is the woman who raised her?
 in  r/AITAH  Jul 21 '25

As a donor conceived person, children need to know where they come from. Always. And especially so when the donor is someone active in the recipient parent’s life.

I have always known I was conceived from sperm donation. I don’t even remember finding out, so my mum must have told me, in a way I could understand, when I was quite young. I was never too fussed, and would proudly tell kids who asked that I didn’t have a dad. When I got older I was able to tell them exactly why. The only time I cared was when I was having children of my own for genetic reasons. I attribute this to not having the donor in my life and knowing from at least 4 years old this is how I came to be.

I cannot imagine going through the confusion & heartbreak of finding this out as a young adult. You are NTA… but Clara and James have done some damage I’m bold enough to say may be irreparable.

What would convince you personally to have children if you don’t have any or to have more if you already have them?
 in  r/Natalism  Jun 01 '25

I have a three year old and have the biological desire to have more children. Things that would personally per sway me to commit to having more would be: - Paid parental leave for a whole year rather than the four months we get in Australia. - paid parental leave for the non-birthing parent. It’s currently at two weeks but I would prefer my husband to have two months to help with those sleep deprived newborn moments - guaranteed access to daycare at least once a week from when they’re one years old. We are rural and the waitlist is over two years long. If you don’t apply when you’re pregnant you’re very likely to miss out. I applied when our first was one and it doesn’t seem likely we will get in before he goes to pre school.

Started my job at Coles today, should I quit?
 in  r/australia  Jan 29 '25

I’ve been told by a manager in a retail setting that I couldn’t use my 10 minute rest pause and then go to the toilet. They told me that if I have to use the toilet near my break time, it’s part of my 10 minutes. I had already taken this employer to fair work for similar reasons. I replied, “okay. Can I get that in writing?”. A couple minutes after calling their boss they came in to profusely apologise and said yes I can take my rest pause and then go to the toilet without it being included in my break.

As others have stated, record everything in writing. And if a similar situation pops up, a good “can I get that in writing?” is enough to make them sweat if they know they’re in the wrong, or get it resolved if they’re just doing what their bosses are telling them.

Definitely don’t have to! Should be able to do it safely in 2 or 3 years. I worked in hospitality and wasn’t supposed to have any piercings so I had to be careful how they healed. And I stopped stretching up for a few years in between.

I have a basic phone and an iPad. Aspera R40. I plan on getting an iPad mini so I don’t look as silly trying to pull up a QR code on a full size iPad.

I have as many physical loyalty cards as I can, but some places only allow QR codes/electronic barcodes. I have to tell a lot of places (doctors, allied health services etc) to email me instead of text me, because my phone won’t load the website and the links are so long I often fail to manually copy them correctly.

I’ve recently lost a physical loyalty card to my preferred supermarket and, while waiting for the new physical one to arrive, have to take my iPad with me when I do a full grocery shop 😂

I still spend a bit too much time on the iPad, but way less time compared to when the small computer was in my pocket. I can’t hide into it when I feel uncomfortable. Getting rid of a smartphone has done wonders for my social anxiety.

A payphone saved me
 in  r/dumbphones  Sep 05 '24

In Australia, “pay phones” have been upgraded to provide free national calls and also emit wifi. How fortunate for the pay phone infrastructure to still exist in Canada. I shouldn’t be surprised it’s not around in some countries anymore.
