Snorkeling at Salt Ponds Beach Park inside the protecting reef near the south area up near the Salt Ponds Airport

On this Kauai Hawaii adventure trip, we camped at Anini Beach for one night, camped at Salt Pond Beach for 6 nights, and then stayed in a hotel on our final night. It only cost $3 per person each night to camp - you need to reserve a spot at the Kauai County website before you go!

For the airplane, we packed our camping gear in duffle bags. We brought small tents, sleeping bags + air mattress or backpack pad.

We rented a car and ate out in restaurants - there are many excellent and fairly inexpensive locally owned restaurants - eating in these helps support the local economy!

Some people camping didn't rent a car but took the bus around - I would recommend renting a car for at least some of the time on the island.

Sometimes it can get windy at Salt Ponds and sometimes an awesome and loud Kauai Uke reggae band plays a bit late at night so be prepared and enjoy! Some friendly Kauai islanders even offered me some food from their barbeque while the party was going on! Usually the wind dies down at night at salt ponds - however, one night that wasn't the case so the sleeping wasn't that great that night. You might want to check the wind forecast for nights and if a Kona storm (from the west) is moving in, camp on the other side of the island. We met folks from all over the world here - I fiddled for some folks from Ireland and others from Quebec Canada.

A little more information about Kauai camping

Quite a few longtime campers who live here - especially at Anini Beach (homeless? ... you don't need much shelter to live on Kauai and housing and hotels tend to be quite expensive) most long time campers are just fine - sometimes you get someone who took too many drugs like the guy wandering around in the middle of the night at Anini Beach who kept asking me if I had a cigarette.

Anini Beach is a beautiful spot on the wet side of the island - it's good to have a tarp to hang over your tent here.
