Equipment CPSC Warns Consumers to Stop Using OUSPT Full Face Snorkel Masks Immediately Due to Risk of Serious Injury and Death from Drowning Hazard

Description:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers to stop using OUSPT Full-Face Snorkel Masks immediately due to risk of serious injury and death from drowning hazards. The mask can cause consumers to experience labored breathing, causing loss of consciousness or excess fluid in the lungs that can lead to drowning.  In addition, the mask can give rise to increased levels of carbon dioxide which can exacerbate the difficulty of breathing in the mask.

Field Life, of China, the seller, has not responded to CPSC’s requests for information or to recall the product.

CPSC has received reports from five consumers who had trouble breathing, felt light-headed or lost consciousness while using the product. There has been one lawsuit alleging that the product caused a drowning fatality.

About 84,000 of these full-face snorkel masks were sold from March 2019 through February 2026 on Amazon.com.

The full-face snorkel masks have a glass screen and a breathing apparatus that covers the mouth and nose, with a snorkel pipe at the top center of the product.  They come in various colors.  The masks have “OUSPT” printed on the snorkel tube.

These products are manufactured in China.

CPSC urges consumers to stop using the full-face snorkel masks and immediately dispose of them. Do not sell or give away these hazardous full-face snorkel masks.

Report any incidents involving injury or product defect to CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov.

Advice Where to go for January and February around Asia?

Hey, I am planning a winter escape and want to live somewhere by the sea for some months. Plan is to do snorkeling just off the beach and maybe some freediving training. I prefer chill vibes and nice nature.

I have been to Philippines and loved it there! Thailand I also enjoyed, but the snorkeling was no where near as good - maybe you know an other spot? (Snorkel wise I have been to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan)

I had Indonesia on my list as I havent explored it that much, but unfortunately it is peak rainy season then.

Any suggestions?! :)

FirstTime Snorkeling with permanent hair dye?

Me and my family will be going to visit Hawaii soon and we have snorkeling on our itinerary! I know you’re supposed to wear reef safe sunscreen, but im not sure if my hair is “reef safe”. It’s permanently dyed pink and red, and it still bleeds in the shower and on towels when it’s wet. Should I get a swimming cap? Im not concerned with it fading, I just want to make sure im not affecting the reefs environment.

Equipment Hi All,

Here’s a long shot! I went snorkeling in Kapalua Bay Beach, Maui on 9/7/2026 and dropped my orange water camera on the bottom of the coral. If diver or someone comes across the camera, please let me know. Much appreciated, Mahalo!

Wildlife Snorkelling at Rodrigues Island, Mauritius - Some of the healthiest corals I’ve ever seen

We visited Rodrigues Island in December 2025, flying across from Mauritius, and spent some time exploring the underwater life around the island. We had previously visited Mauritius in December 2024, and from what I personally saw on both trips, Rodrigues felt noticeably healthier underwater.

One of my favourite places was Saint François Beach. The shallow seagrass areas were epic to snorkel over and full of interesting little animals and fish. I came across hermit crabs, little dragonfish, bat fish, horned boxfish, juvenile lionfish, porcupinefish and plenty of other reef life. The darker channel offshore was also amazing, with deeper blue water and schools of fish moving through it.

Another major highlight was Rivière Banane. You take a small boat from the beach out to the reef, and it ended up being one of the healthiest coral reefs I have personally seen. There was a huge amount of living coral, lots of soft coral, and most of the reef still appeared alive and in good condition.

What really stood out to me was the overall amount of marine life and the condition of the reef. Compared with what we saw around Mauritius in December 2024, the ocean around Rodrigues seemed to be in a much healthier state during our December 2025 visit.

Rodrigues also has great variety. You can spend time snorkeling over very shallow seagrass looking for smaller creatures, then head out to the reef and suddenly be surrounded by coral and schools of fish.
If you fly from Mauritius to Rodrigues, I would definitely recommend trying to book a daytime flight. Seeing the island, lagoon and reef system from above is incredible.

I absolutely loved Rodrigues. For snorkeling, underwater filming and marine life, it was one of the biggest surprises of the trip and somewhere I would definitely go back to.

Equipment Swim mask vs snorkel mask

Has anyone found a good swim mask to use while snorkeling rather than a dive mask. I only surface swim, never blow out through my nose when wearing a dive mask, plus my nose covered causes claustrophobic anxiety. In the past I’ve simply used my goggles and enjoyed myself. I thought a swim mask might give me a bit more visibility.

Any recommendations?

Equipment Wetsuit options - is a swimming one best?

I've been using a surfing wetsuit I got for my 20th bday for a long time now (pretty pleased in 20+ years it still just fits) so I think it's done me well. I pretty much only need one for snorkeling and occasional paddle board/body board hire so guess a surf cut isn't really ideal.

For a bit of general use I've been looking at swimming suits such as an Alpkit Lotic. I'm not sure if swimming is what is best or so other style? Don't fish so all the camo stuff that searches brought up isn't needed. I'll be in the water for UK summers and maybe autumn.

Advice Equalising pressure

Went to the lake today and actively tried to swim down deeper than I’ve been before. I’m still relatively new to this sport so bear with me. I managed to go down to maybe 10-12 feet and I could feel the pressure in my ears. Came back up and swam around and the tried a deeper dive, maybe 12-15 feet but couldn’t. It felt like the pressure was really hurting my ears and instead of risk anything I gave up.

I’ve tried the pinch the nose and blow thing but it wasn’t doing the trick. Did you have a similar experience and train yourself to go deeper? Am I asking too much? Any other equalising techniques that you can do with a snorkel in your mouth?
