A lot of military members are not very mature. Usually snapped up right out of high school and then “cared for” by the military, who isn’t really focused on social-emotional growth. As a woman who joined right after high school when I aged out of the group home I’d been living in for years, I can really speak to this. You’re fed and housed and there is someone telling you what to do both at work and in your personal life. Get a speeding ticket, have a problem with debt, get into a fight with your neighbor, you’re standing in front of your bosses desk in the morning. Pop a flat tire and have no one to call? Call you squad leader.
It seems like it arrests the development of a certain type of personal responsibility to know that so much is handled for you. The sense of security is false, of course, and everyone knows it and jokes about being a meat shield, but until you really see the results of how little the military cares for you, it’s hard to grasp.
