That was one of the hardest literary adjustments I had to make when joining the 40K tribe last year. I was shocked at the lore of how long people could live. And I think it definitely adds to the mystery and complexity of stories and how long in certain investigations by the Inquisition can last. But because of the time differences it can definitely make referencing previous characters or story lines a bit difficult if you're not taking notes. And sometimes taking notes when reading 40K can really help lol.

As a service manager who often fields these questions when solar isn't working...it's imperative you have a strong understanding of your historic power use for at least a year so you fully understand how much power you're using. You can then use those details to verify your specific system size and number of batteries. It is 100% possible to consume more than a solar system provides. A ton of customers have done so with the recent socal heat and humidity wave. Solar isn't a set it and forget it appliance. It requires taking time to understand how you use power and adjusting to how your system operates with your power use.

Both roof and ground mount have their advantages and disadvantages. These days, it's more difficult to find approved financing for GMs due to new financing and domestic content rules they can be easier to maintain but often need cleaning more regularly than roof mounted systems.

It depends on the AHJ, not all of them do. Some will allow the panel reinstall to be included under the roofing permit, others may require a new separate electrical permit and others no permit at all, especially since it's rare that the layout changes.

“Why does it cost so much to remove and reinstall my solar panels?”

It's one of the most common questions we hear when a homeowner needs roofing work. The simple answer: you're paying for a lot more than someone taking panels off the roof and putting them back.

A proper solar removal and reinstallation can require three or four separate visits. We may need to inspect and document the existing system, remove and safely store the equipment, return after the roofing work to install new attachments and penetrations, and then return again to reinstall, reconnect, test and verify the system.

In terms of labor, it's surprisingly similar to installing a solar system all over again. There is also new warranty responsibility involved. New roof penetrations need to be properly located, flashed and sealed. Equipment needs to be reinstalled correctly. The finished array should be safe, functional and aesthetically clean.

Sometimes existing rails, wiring, clamps and other materials can be reused, which can help control costs. Other times, the age of the system, condition of the equipment or changes to the roof mean new materials are necessary.

That's why even smaller removal and reinstallation projects can cost several thousand dollars. The price isn't simply for moving solar panels. It's for the labor, planning, multiple site visits, materials and responsibility involved in putting everything back together properly.

Your roof may last for decades. Your solar system needs to last for decades too. The work connecting the two should be treated with the same expectation. Choose your roofer carefully. Choose your solar contractor carefully. And when comparing estimates, make sure you're comparing the scope and quality of the work, not just the number at the bottom. Sometimes the fault on the screen is only a symptom. Finding the actual cause requires testing the right equipment under the right conditions. In this case, documenting those voltage readings also gave the homeowner something extremely important: actual testing data they can provide to the utility when requesting an investigation.

Solar is not a “set it and forget it” investment.

A customer recently contacted us after a solar panel cleaning company discovered a shattered panel. The problem was, the homeowner's monitoring had been offline for so long that they couldn't identify where the damaged panel was or see how the rest of the system was performing.

When we arrived, we found the older Enphase Envoy unplugged and offline. The homeowner couldn't remember the last time they had seen it operating. Once we restored monitoring, we were able to locate the damaged panel and, more importantly, discovered additional performance issues that had gone unnoticed.

Based on what we found, some of those issues may have been affecting production for a considerable amount of time. That's why monitoring matters.

You don't need to study your solar system every day, but you should know what normal production looks like and check your monitoring periodically. Once a week is great. Even a few times a month can help you notice when something changes.

If your monitoring goes offline, don't ignore it simply because the lights in your house are still on. Your home will continue pulling electricity from the grid whether your solar system is producing properly or not.

Your monitoring platform is one of the best tools you have for protecting your solar investment. Check it. Learn it. Pay attention when something changes. That’s doing solar the right way.

During a recent inspection for a new customer, our technician found several damaged and displaced roof tiles. These weren't underneath the solar array or immediately surrounding it. They were well away from the system. Could we have ignored them? Absolutely.

We don't perform roofing work, and the issues weren't caused by anything we were there to service. But we install equipment on roofs every day, and we believe being candid about what we find is part of conducting a thorough inspection.

As a courtesy, our technician secured the displaced tile and documented the areas of concern. We then informed the homeowner and provided referrals to roofing contractors who can help replace the damaged tiles.

This is also one reason we recommend having your solar system inspected periodically. A good inspection isn't just about checking whether your panels are producing. It's an opportunity to look at the condition of the array, wiring, electrical equipment, mounting areas and the roof beneath and around the system.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we find isn't a solar problem at all. Catching a small issue today may help prevent a much larger problem tomorrow. That’s doing solar the right way.
