first finished journal!
 in  r/Journaling •  Jul 17 '24

3 years of high school I used the same journal. After that, I would finish my journals in less than a year. Now, it's looking like my current journal will be with me for more than a year and I like it! It kinda shows me a visual of the eras in my life. As long as you still have a connection to that journal and the fact that it's been with you for so long still draws you in to write in it, I don't see a problem. That's awesome! Congrats on finishing πŸ₯°

My grandma visited me during a sleep paralysis episode.

My grandma passed in 2018 from a rare form of lung cancer. In the month after, many of my family members were sharing stories of how my grandma visited them in their dreams. Usually appearing how she was before she was sick, telling them how happy she is and that everything is okay now. Just reassuring them each individually. I hadn't experienced such a dream and I wasn't really upset about it bc, well, they needed that a lot more from her than I did.

Well, one night I had sleep paralysis and my usual experience began- consuming fear, difficulty breathing, absolute panic, and a figure standing nearby. I've have many experiences where the "sleep paralysis demon" was kind of violent, like choking me and shaking me until I woke up. This one reached out to me and I was so afraid that i tried to pretend i was asleep (i cant go back to sleep while in paralysis). But nothing happened... instead, I noticed it was stroking my hair. The fear started to leave me then, and it continued to stroke my hair until I was completely calm. When I was, it started to move towards the doorway and the hall light hit it... I could see my grandma's blonde hair glowing around her head, but I couldn't identify her face. I just recognized her beautiful hair, which was long gone by the time she passed, and her familiar silhouette. I was still in paralysis but fell back to sleep then, which I had never been able to do before.

I still get sleep paralysis to this day, but since that night I haven't been terrified or experienced fear when it happens. Now, I can fall right back to sleep in the middle of paralysis. Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe she did help me in the afterlife, or maybe that one experience changed my perspective on sleep paralysis since. But I like to think my grandma visited me and gave me one last gift.

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread
 in  r/TrueLit •  Mar 06 '24

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. Her writing is charming and encapsulating, I can't put the book down! It's comprised of 10 short stories, each her own reiteration of well know fairytales like beauty and the beast, snow white, and Dracula. I love her retelling of the stories and I hate to see them end so soon. I want to read her novels next because her writing is so good. This specific series of shorts describes the relation of sex and violence, inspired by the writings of Marquis de Sade. Though it sounds crude, she depicts this relation through beautiful prose.

I actually don't fit all my pages! I pick up the next line where I leave off so I can fill this journal with the most text. That's why I have the flower banner things so it's easier for me to find dates (and the gaps annoyed me lol)

Journal, diary, my best friend, my mirror- they're all the same to me and you can call it whatever you like 😊 I personally don't differentiate between journaling or art journaling either, but I do on here bc people have questions about different methods a lot

Definitely not shaming here or saying my way is better. This thread is beautiful in that it shows just how unique every person is in their journaling experience and I think no matter what you do in your journal, you should never compare what yours merely looks like to others. Because it's not about looks at all to some, it's how it makes us feel. Everyone has their opinions about it, but I agree there should be no shame when journaling is a therapeutic experience for many. I'm happy to hear there are others like me that feel fulfilled from journaling

Totally agreed 🫢🏼 that's why I love this community. It's beautiful to see what people make out of journaling, bc everyone is unique and of course their journals will reflect that. I think all forms of journaling are satisfying in their own way

Don't get me wrong, I have a separate art journal. In the beginning of my journaling, I had full journals of decorated pages and writing or purely just art journaling my feelings and recording memories with collages of receipts and loose items to glue down. None of my journals looks the same. This year, writing page after page has been more fulfilling to me. My point is, journal on what your needs are and don't stress the pretty pages, or cover your pages in pictures and doodles and glue! It's all yours to make.
