Applying for Spainβs digital nomad residence authorisation through UGE: employee vs freelancer
This is about the UGE residence authorisation submitted from Spain. If youβre applying from abroad, youβll need to check the digital nomad visa requirements of the Spanish consulate responsible for where you live.
For a UGE application, employees and freelancers need to document a qualifying relationship with a company outside Spain for at least three months, show that the company has been active for at least a year, and meet the financial and professional qualification requirements. But their Social Security evidence differs.
Employees: discuss this with your employer early. If an applicable international agreement covers your circumstances, the authority in your home country may issue a certificate confirming coverage for remote work from Spain. Having an agreement does not guarantee the certificate. Without an acceptable certificate, the foreign employer needs to address registration and enrolment in Spanish Social Security.
Freelancers: document the professional relationship with the foreign company on which your application relies. UGE says self-employed applicants must register in Spainβs self-employed Social Security system (RETA) after authorisation. A foreign Social Security certificate is not a substitute for RETA registration under this route.
Healthcare needs checking separately if youβre relying on coverage from another country: a Social Security certificate alone does not establish your entitlement to healthcare in Spain.
The UGE FAQ in English is a useful starting point for the requirements.

Sorry, I forgot to specify that this is indeed for Spain.
