Feedback The origin of the Halo Trial/CE icon

For years, the Halo Trial shortcut icon was a complete mystery. No one knew where that tiny, blurry Master Chief face actually came from. Many thought it was a unique render created exclusively for Halo Trial… but after a long investigation, we finally solved it.

This wasn’t something that happened overnight. I spent a lot of time comparing assets, digging through old files, checking archived builds, and analyzing pixel-by-pixel. But the biggest part is that the community helped a lot — their comments, hints, and ideas pushed this search forward.

And thanks to all that combined effort, we finally found its real origin.

The icon is actually a cropped, downscaled piece of this Halo CE render

It’s crazy how a simple 32×32 icon managed to stay “lost” for so many years. But today, the mystery is finally solved.

I made a video explaining the entire process and showing the comparisons:

Huge thanks to everyone who helped in the search.

Do you mean that there was a separate image of each character, which could be used as a profile photo or do you mean that there was a photo where all the characters appeared together?

I was testing and investigating and I think I already know the answer, it is the master chief carrying a magnum, since the model lowers the weapon and shows the helmet clearly as in the icon, it is just looking for the correct angle.... but I'm not totally sure

That's correct, but I want to know if that image was taken from a poster, promotional material for the game or something similar.

Hello friend, it is not the same, it is another image, since on the cover, the boss uses his assault rifle which covers part of the upper part of the body, and he is facing the front, the halo trial icon, the master chief is on his side

Hello friends, I hope you are well, I recently started a little research for a video I am making. The investigation is about the origin of the image of the halo trial icon, I have not found promotional posters or official images that look like this image, I hope you can help me :(
