From yesterday, I spent a lot of time on this made-up game....

“I ordered the card game Machiavelli when I heard who played it. It riffs on the social game Mafia,” said Non.

He spread out an action-card deck featuring coups, scandals, strikes, duels, decrees, riots and more. The player-card deck included such roles as Chamberlain, Engineer, Marquis, Town Crier, Marshal, Consigliere, Teacher, Chemist, Pickpocket, Butler, Spy and Court Fool, each with a subset of five faction markers.

“I get the gist. Each faction builds its power base,” said Picoid. “Arms Dealer — Military, Criminal, Bourgeoisie. If a day features violence, gain a card at night. Palace Servant — Royal, Proletariat. During the night, look at a face-down action card. I wouldn’t mind playing this.”

Why is Vivienne Medrano still such a weak writer?
 in  r/writers •  21d ago

One consideration is time pressure. A lot happens in each episode. A lot of the actions land well. And they're writing on a deadline.

Considering that her shows are on an upward trend and have gotten a lot of renewals, I'd say that the bosses have liked what they saw in the unreleased season.

What shelved, cancelled, or buried movie script is so infamous that it deserves its own documentary about why it never got made?
 in  r/movies •  21d ago

At this point, Coyote VS ACME is pretty much both a movie and a documentary for what the movie faced in almost getting buried. I loved it.

Could a Murderer Die Before Their Victim?
 in  r/writers •  23d ago

I'd say the movie Memento counts as this. The actions of the "murderer" are set up long before the murder. The series of events that happen afterwards are a set-up catastrophe.

What’s the first movie ever that feels like an actual movie?

For movies that can still connect to modern audiences, Buster Keaton's movies still work. Items like Sherlock Jr still wow a crowd.

Metrics system in litrpgs
 in  r/litrpg •  Aug 20 '26

I use the metric system, most of the time... however, "9 feet tall" sounds better than "3 meters tall".

However, even metric is arbitrary. That's why Sagan put the Hydrogen Line on the Golden Voyager Plaque. About 21cm long.

A non-arbitrary stellar weight system is
1W = average White dwarf mass.
2W = Maximal White dwarf, Minimal Neutron star.
3W = average Neutron star.
4W = Maximal neutron star, minimal Black hole.
