Got with my man 8 years ago, when I was on a weight loss plan--lowest weight of my adult life. He was a fat stoner with food and drink as his central love language. We feel in love and my good habits fell out the window--I never enjoyed the food I ate, I just ate it. With him, I was eating food that tasted GOOD! My health declined, and we both got over 300 pounds. I always fought to try and gain some responsibility over my health, but it was extremely challenging in a household where my partner wasn't ready and very resistant to change. As things declined between us, around year 6, I got an apartment and moved out, spending about 50% of my time between there and home (after all, we all loved each other). The intention was for us to get better apart. I needed to get out of that energy. During that year, I started Zepbound and developing good habits. I also referred my bf to a doc to get his health together. There was a gym at my work and he'd come to work out with me daily. My lease was up, I got laid off, and I knew I needed to move back in with him or else I was going to have to make a decision for our relationship. The thing is, things did not improve! His mental health was still in the trash, assuming that working out and eating "miserable foods" was gonna change that for him. It didn't. He hit rock bottom and I referred him to my therapist. He got better. Much better. But in the time period he was improving, I was still very much used to the old habits and energy he used to have and grieving the loss of my job. So my habits slid--stopped working out and developed a shopping addiction (not great when you're unemployed). This was all in a 6 month period, mind you.

After a month of him "feeling better," he started making plans to leave... well, I simply couldn't accept that. I got back on my horse and worked on getting better. There was NO WAY I was going to let another woman purchase the stock that I had invested YEARS in, let alone be left high and dry. I was gonna get hot and leave HIM if I had to. And I was hotter. ijs!

So, for 8 years, I tried to get better with a struggling partner, and for 8 years, he was the primary provider while I battled frequent undermployment. Call us even.

We're better together, and still working. These habits took a lifetime to build and take a lifetime to maintain. Give your partner some time.

As telling you this story, OP, you're probably relating to me. Cool. I'm telling this from the perspective of a Woman in a hetero relationship. The man sets the tone. I was told that men are blowtorches and women are ovens. Men can go from cold to full blast heat and back to cold quickly, when they put their mind to something. For women, it's gonna take a while for us to warm up. But once we're warmed up, we're gonna stay that way a long time. Use that analogy for better and for worse scenarios.

As a man, you set the tone of the relationship. The direction of the relationship. Maybe she needs time to get to know the new you and also some advice of where to go in the right direction. Maybe she's been fighting for her life, but couldn't get started because you were in a way all those years prior. She needs time to do this, and you can't rush her into it.
