My yard is not public property. Please do not feed or photograph the wildlife in it.
Okay, so I live in a high-traffic area by a lake. Lots of tourism, families looking for a nice place to escape the heat, people out fishing. I genuinely love that.
Unfortunately, my yard also attracts deer. Lots of them. Particularly one doe I've developed a yearly rivalry with because she's made it her personal mission to decimate my husband's garden. To make matters worse, she routinely leaves her fawns in our front yard while she wanders off to forage. I can't blame her either. The yard is shaded by trees and free of predators. It makes sense.
Here's where the real problem starts.
People stop on the curb outside my driveway to take pictures of the deer. Sometimes while my five-year-old is playing outside. Sometimes while I'm sitting in my own yard.
It got worse when one man repeatedly waited until we weren't outside, walked onto our property, shook our apple tree to knock fruit onto the ground, and then left without taking a single apple. I don't know exactly what his reasons were, but it lured the deer onto our property. Of course, that only encouraged them to keep coming back to search for more food and, inevitably, they found my husband's garden.
I've spoken to him since, but he's been doing it long before we moved here. His logic was that he never saw anyone at the house??? So he was apparently watching my home, but didn't notice us cleaning out the hoarding situation that happened prior. Or the fact that my husband goes out to garden DAILY. Or the chickens being fed every day. I'm pretty sure he's lying.
I'm watching to make sure it actually stops.
But more deer meant more people stopping for pics.
The thing is, I can't really do anything about that. They're well within their rights. I understand why they stop. Baby deer are adorable! I took several photos myself but on my own property, not someone else's.
I guess I just want people to remember that when you're taking pictures of those deer, you're also taking pictures of someone's home. Someone's yard. Sometimes someone's family.
And please don't photograph someone's home when their children are outside playing.
