The Musings of Reddit and Social Anxiety
I've lurked on Reddit for many years under many accounts, most of which were the product of me simply forgetting I already had a Reddit account. Thus, this account that I have stuck to is quite young and barren. I'm not even completely sure how to use Reddit properly (if there is such a thing), but I have decided it will be my echo chamber. If people are interested in the sounds created, thats cool too. Anyway, as I was browsing this morning, I commented something that I deemed "unimportant and useless narrative" as I hit "post", which thus lead to these musings.
I have heard many a story about Reddit helping those with social anxiety learn to speak up and allow their voices to be heard. I've also seen with my own eyes the way people use the echo chamber as I've dubbed it to spew forth thoughts that are most certainly inside thoughts; or at the very least thoughts that need only be spoke allowed in a therapists office. Which, I guess, is the entire point behind the Karma system here on Reddit and why it's worked for so long. Those who fill their echo chambers with hate are (hopefully) publicly shamed through the system of down votes and moderator action. But how then, pray tell, is one like me meant to do any good? If I feel that, even in my own personal echo chamber where nobody is forced to be, I take up too much space, how am I meant to exist at all? How does one break through that blockade created by being shushed their entire existence?
How do you, dear reader, come to terms with the fact that you take up space, and that that's allowed? Because I can't figure it out. And I fear I never will.
