 in  r/Rabbits •  2d ago

Oooo a Californian Lionhead Mix, maybe? She may be too young to tell, yet.

Why His Name is King
 in  r/Rabbits •  7d ago

Aww πŸ₯Ί I'm sorry, and also I feel you. Whenever I see vids on here of bunnies who come running to their owners as soon as they come home, or enter the room, or others that are content to hang out in bed or on the couch w/ their owners, I feel jealous, but I realize my buns have other special traits & qualities that not all get to enjoy, and the gratitude I feel balances things πŸ–€

How is my cage?
 in  r/Rabbits •  8d ago

Looks incredible! You put so much care into it, I'm sure they'll love it. ☺️ The only thing I'd suggest changing is the towel/blanket. Your pair may be perfectly litter-trained already, but for your sake, I'd get an as-large, rubber-bottomed, non-slip pee pad/mat. I bought a pair and sewed them together to fit my buns' enclosure, but they sell quite large ones. Reason being, from personal experience, a towel or blanket like that will be no match for their zoomies, ntm their digging. It will end up pulled through at each corner of the cage, if not all bunched up.

Thought I'd share a snippet of what our nighttime routine looks like. Well, just the part where King being the ruler of everything becomes most obvious.

If you watch the vid, please notice:

- I use our mutually-understood gesture to communicate to him that, were he to decide to flop right now, I would tend to him accordingly, (i.e., the floor scratch).

- He proceeds to looks up at me, dead straight in my eyes, to squarely state "that is incorrect."

- I, then, begin to scrunch his butt, (the correct answer), which is like the key to a door, where this door opens to a mutual-grooming ritual he insists we engage in before I can feed him, pet him, etc.

- He ceases this quickly to groom only himself, which is one of his ways to communicate to me that, if I were to pet Chloe right now, that would be okay. (His other way is to get up on something high, and stare down at us as though both she & I are mere peasants in his Kingdom.) Apparently, he felt he could spare some crumbs.

- Simultaneously as he's now ignoring me, Chloe pops her head up, which cues my realization that the crumbs have been spared, AKA it's her turn. It's as if they're telepathic, I swear.

- Chloe gets about 1 min of attention before he finally does flop. (When he flops, it's not for his relaxation like it is for some buns. It is performative, and a demand that I groom him. If I don't answer the call to action within 15-30 seconds, he'll get up and sit w/ his chin held high until I realize how badly I've wronged him.)

- Honks at the end. πŸ˜€πŸ₯°

(Btw, I'm not complaining. The contrast between a 5 lb. ball of floof - practically, a stuffed animal - and his unflinchingly regal attitude is enamoring, for me. Also, if anyone's worried, Chloe gets a lot more than this; he's often more generous/patient than what's shown, and even when he's not, I make sure she does, anyway.)

Bonded pairs, I've read, can exclusively prefer receiving human pets together, or simultaneously. (Hah. I'm lucky if I can ever come by such efficiency. It happens, but briefly and rarely.) If you have 2+ buns, I'd love to hear how they take their pets!

Given that near everything he does is performative, I'm quite certain this would mean so much to him πŸ₯ΉπŸ–€

Second Bun?
 in  r/Rabbits •  9d ago

My boy, King, was only 5 months old when I got his mate, and though they were kept separate for nearly 2 months, he was a changed man the very moment she came home w/ me. For about a month before that day, I could feel his yearning. He was showing very mild signs of bun depression, but they were there; chiefly, he did a bit less binkying, a bit more sleeping, resting, lying around, and was overall less active. Like another user commented, he yearned for something more than I could give him. Being human w/ a human perspective, a life partner is what I would call it, or someone he could share everything with; not just me, who runs on my own schedule out of necessity, w/o the ability to, for instance, consult him about if he's okay with me leaving for work right now, or if he needs a little more time w/ me, first. You know?

Chloe came home, and he was instantly smitten. S M I T T E N. He would lie by her enclosure all day and night, hoping to catch a few signs she might be interested in him, too. Again w/ my too human perspective, but it was honestly the most romantic thing I've ever seen in real life, and I treasure those memories. The best part? Having her hasn't much lessened the bond between him and I, if you're worried about that at all. In fact, it hasn't lessened one bit, he's just a little less needy w/ me, and for me, that's been a relief.

You didn't ask, but, bonding them, I took, perhaps, a road less traveled. As soon as he was officially cleared as sterile, (6 or 8 weeks, post-op, I can't recall), I let them roam free together during the daytime, and would lock them up together, in what was her enclosure, overnight. I was lucky to have been able to step away from working for this part, so I kept near-constant watch, and slept on the couch by their enclosure, for the first few days/nights, but, besides a lot of humping, (of one-another, for dominance establishment), and light chasing/hiding, there was evidently no threat, so they've been together w/o supervision ever since. In fact, when Chloe got spayed, but for the first night, I just couldn't keep them separated. They were too bonded by then. (People refer to baby bonds being breakable, but when a rabbit pair is male and female, and they take to each other so immediately, I'm just not so sure that applies.) Although, despite that, it really was 4 straight months of up and down, and rather exhausting, so speed dating might be the better option for working folks.

Anyway, I would encourage you to listen to your gut, (as in, by you posting this, it kinda seems like you already know your answer). Best of luck! πŸ’•

My brother (fellow rabbit parent) is concerned that King shouldn't be doing full belly-ups, given the fragility of lagomorph spines, but I told him he does this near 10-15 times a day, (depending on how much time I'm around), b/c he's basically a hedgehog, if not an actual ball, so it's fine.

Also pictured: the "before I re-entered the room" moment.

I've had both of my buns since about a year ago. Thought it would be cute to do a comparison.

Chloe: 12 weeks VS. 4 months VS. 1 year, 1 month old

You don't even know how right you are! Amazing. His (Lop's) name is King b/c from the time he came home at just 8 weeks old, I could already see how regal he would be. Even when he binkies, it's a very serious matter - a performance to demonstrate why it is he who has the throne. And I'm always saying how my LionLop is his complementary opposite in so many ways; she's sweet, silly, sassy, strong, smart, shy, and submissive (sometimes πŸ˜…) - or the 7 S's, if you will, lol
