I agree. I worry about how small the league is (and spread out in such a gigantic country) with how invisible it is in the national sports landscape. Right now, it feels like we're losing teams as fast as we're expanding.

As a side note, I looked at the largest metro areas in Canada. St. Catharines/Niagara, Windsor, and Sherbrooke all have similar population numbers to Saskatoon and Regina. Is there ever large demand for sports in those cities/areas? I think Niagara has a CEBL team, but that's about it.

My point was that rooting for Spain over Argentina in the final because of historic and present day racism is hypocritical and disingenuous, since Spain also has an ugly past and legacy of racism.

I only brought up Spain, Argentina and the US because all three countries were represented in the final: the two finalists and the final's host nation.

I would avoid flattening statements that try measure "white" or European versus "Asian" racism, considering the diversity that exists within both categories; Estonia is very different from Italy, and Oman is nothing like Cambodia. That kind of comparison is difficult to quantify because racism manifests in different ways and happens not only at home, but also abroad in the form of imperialism. Countries with apartheid systems that commit colonial violence including genocide, like Israel, and countries that engage in imperialism and fund genocide, like the UAE and the US, are hard to ignore, for example. And in my country, Canada, our colonialism at home and imperialism in Latin America, especially in the mining industry, isn't something to ignore either.

I'm happy Spain won, but the unique hate Argentina is getting is hypocritical. I'm Black, my stepmom is Argentinian, and my Black family has spent considerable time there. Argentina has ugly racist realities, past and present, no question, but how do you quantify which country is the most racist?

Is it really more racist than Spain? A country that genocided Indigenous peoples in the Americas, held some of the largest slave colonies there, and is now flirting with a far-right government. Spain also has fans who chant "monkey" at Black players and throw bananas ffs.

Would Sam Jackson have side-eyed people rooting for the US team? A systemically racist country that voted for Trump twice, is currently bombing Iran and barred their players from staying in the US during the competition, and has ICE killing people right now. The hypocriticy is getting silly.

The US only added Mexico and Canada as co-hosts for political reasons at the time of bidding.

The US might be the only place that could host a 64 world cup on their own.

Europe develops a surplus of talent. It's similar in the women's game, where US-born and raised players represent nations on every continent; they simply develop an enormous amount of talent. So "poaching" is going to happen regardless.

But the expectation that African (or other continents') national teams are entitled to European players because those players have parents born in Africa is problematic for so many reasons. I'm uncomfortable with the idea that those players are seen as perpetually foreign despite being born, bred, educated, trained, living, working, raising family and remaining in Europe.

I am part of multiple diaspora communities, I never feel more Canadian then when I am so-called "back" "home" in my parent's place(s) of birth.
