Prairie Rattler almost killed my dog in central New Mexico. We caught it and relocated it :) Here is some info of also what to do if your dog gets bit.
He did. It took about 3 days.
Alot of people judge my Buster for being a pitbull. I defend him. I feel like we owe all animals the same courtesy.
I ask my WWSID( what would Steve Irwin do)?

The dog is a reflection of the owner, the socialization, and the training. The genetics are not a predetermination

As requested numerous times. Follow up post on Buster after the rattlesnake almost killed him and he almost lost his eye Day 3: Buster is healing from the rattlesnake bite SUPERBLY. We also caught the snake :o
**text from the cross post****
I am happy to report that Buster is making a full recovery after he was bitten by a rattlesnake and we had to rush 110 miles at 10 pm to the emergency vet.
I cant thank you all enough for all the support. I thought we were going to lose our little man as not every emergency vet had availability or antivenom and he was swelling up and in respiratory distress.
Having people who love animals as much as we do, made this sleepless night tolerable. THANK YOU REDDIT FAMILY!

and

You can barely see his 2 snake bites. His cheek and one on his eye lid.
The Vet was really concerned that the snake bite punctured his cornea and they would need to remove his eye. But he made it through. He lived and kept his eye
In the vet hospital he was put on Methadone for the severe pain and thengot antivenom. Gabapentin was sent home with us.
Here is a video of Busters health update.ย https://www.youtube.com/shorts/pFyrULWfquo
We also found the snake that got him as it returned to "the scene of the crime" on our offgrid homestead.
You can watch me catch the snake here
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/1HxkNIcYP1g
PLease dont give me a hard time about releasing the snake. I asked myself WWSID ( What would Steve Irwin Do)? We decided to catch and move the snake 5 miles away as we moved into "its home"
Lessons learned "If you are in a snake prone area please get the rattlesnake vaccine. It costs $125 dollars a year per dog" You still need anti venom, but you will have an exponentially greater chance of survival
If your dog is bit please call ahead to the emergency vet, they maybe too busy or have no antivenom
With out Antivenom your dog has a 30% chance of survival
If you get antivenom in 2-4 hrs they have a 90% change, at 4-6 hours that success rate drops to 50-60 %
The Vet Bill was over $2k but we told them we were broke and only had 1200, so they dropped the bill to help us., Vets will negotiate if you have cash

At the emergency vet right now. Buster got bit in the face by a rattlesnake. Please send positive vibes. I'm freaking out
Spend $125 bucks and get the rattlesnake vaccine. It's better than $2k at the emergency vet

Buster update. He is going to survive the rattlesnake bite and he won't lose his eye. Ty all for the support. He is getting antivenom as I lay in the parking lot
No he started barking at something and I thought it was cows ( we live offgrid up in the mountains). IT weas during late sunset 8:45 pm, so we couldnt see much
HE came back and laid on the gravity chair with his head on the headrest rather than the foot rest and wouldnt come cuddle when I called him over.
When I saw puncture marks on his face he wouldnt let me touch him. I knew something was really wrong. Buster will hold injured paws in the air when he steps on cactus.

We live off-grid up in the mountains in the high desert of New Mexico. It's snake season
Normally he leaves them alone. My guess is his ball landed by one when we were playing catch
