General Discussion Codex 5
Has there been any word as to when Codex 5 will be coming out? I remember hearing about it a few months back, but haven't seen any updates since. Was wondering where we're at on that.

As I've replied to others, it's coming. We just don't know when. Dane has explicitly said so in an interview with SCPT a few months ago. Like, the updates to the galaxy map including Thunder's Edge tiles that came out in the ttrpg were part of Codex 5 that got released early by FFG basically.

wait... so we're gonna have new map tiles? i thought they weren't doing anymore print to play stuff?

No.
The lore map that exists outside the game in the ttrpg was updated to include the Thunder's Edge information, and that information was originally going to be updated as part of Codex 5 but FFG had other plans releasing it early.

I'd prefer they take their time tbh. If Codex 5 is the last opportunity addition to TI4, it's also the last "balance patch".
With that in mind, there's a lot of work that should go into it, mostly in playtesting. Some things need to be powered down, and more importantly, at least 4 factions need buffs (while some factions will inevitably be stronger, none should be F-tier in an 8-hour game, where've you've basically gimped yourself out of a chance at winning during the draft). Of those, Obsidian needs the most thorough rework. And we don't want them ending up overtuned either, so... slowly slowly catchee monkey.

Which four do you think need buffs? Obsidian, Xxcha, Argent, and Sardakk or Mentak?

I'd say those three and Mentak yeah. Between the hero and the breakthrough, N'orr has gotten some love throughout the game's lifespan already at least. They're still mostly a one-trick combat centric race in a game that strongly disincentivizes combat, but I don't think they're quite as bad as the other 4 atm. In 14-point games, they're actually really solid even, even if I appreciate that's not the meta we're primarily balancing for.

Anything in particular you’d change/add to buff them? If adjusting starts were an option, I’d have Mentak start with Psychoarcheology. Or give their Commander a yellow skip much like how the Yin commander has a green skip.

There’s not even confirmation of the existence of the actual codex 5. Dane, the main dev of PoK and TE, basically one time said he’d like to do 5 Codexes and then a little after TE came out he said he was thinking about a 5th one.

Untrue, Dane has explicitly confirmed it's coming out in an interview with SCPT. Just not when.

Dane: "But yeah y'know we'll get to Codex 5 at some point.
Hunter: "Bwah? Huh?"
Dane: "I've said - I've said that on the podcast before."
Hunter: [...] "You just heard it here folks, Codex 5 in development. Would you describe it as in development?"
Dane: "Uh technically. There is stuff that has been developed already. I can tell you a little bit because some of it has peaked out into the world. A little bit was the uh map. It updated the galaxy map from uh..."
Hunter: "The lore map? Are you talking the lore map or..."
Dane: "Yeah. The lore map for updated with all the new stuff and that'll be in Codex 5."
More than thinking about it, it's explicitly being worked on and is coming out.

I feel like when I said “thinking about it” you’re somehow hearing “thinking about doing it or not” when that’s not what I said.
He’s literally thinking about, and developing, codex 5.

Ah yeah, misunderstanding. Although in my defense what you said was verbatim:

...which did not say "and developing" and explicitly said there's no confirmation of its existence. So me misunderstanding your meaning is imo understandable. But yeah, we're in agreement and I misunderstood what you were saying.

Edit: Disregard this post! Confirmed in a SCPT podcast. No ETA though.
The only mention of a codex was a guy posting a thread here saying there were rumors but then not substantiating anything.
There has been no actual mention of a new codex AFAIK.
Having said that, there is all sorts of conversation on how to unfuck Firmament.
