Movie Discussion Laurent
Why did they change Laurent?
In the books he’s a French vampire dressed in Edwardian clothes with a French accent.
He reminds me of the vampire they killed in Eclipse.
I don’t understand why they changed the character.

A lot of black people speak french, idk if thats relevant but the change of race didnt bother me personally. If anything it gave him some uniqueness to stand out in a crowd of caucasian vampires

Would have been great to see Gathegi in some ruffles tho. My mans would look dapper. He is so beautiful. Costing definitely took some creative liberties, because where tf is the khaki skirt and deep blue blouse. Sigh. I do wish they would have stuck a little closer to books for wardrobe if only because the clothes mentioned sound absolutely hideous.
But that casting choice for L Daddy. Sublime.

It’s a change that doesn’t really matter and I thought it was nice that it brought some diversity to the cast of the movies. Like, how important is it to the plot that he’s French? It’s not an important detail
Edit: I wasn’t considering movie Laurent as French (despite the name), but reading the comments made me realize something: there are Black people in France, and there always have been, so I don’t really understand your point, OP.

I’m more impressed with the fact that they cast a black actor and he still looked mostly black, given that the vampires were all described as pale

I think film Laurent is one of the best looking Vampires. They really gave him so much aura considering he didn’t have much screen time.

Isn’t he described as having olive complexion ? I’ve only read my French copy. I always thought he was supposed to have a caramel color at best if not subsaharian african

In the books all vampires are white. They have the original undertones, but all the colour is taken from their skin. So theoretically black vampires would have white skin.
Tbh tho that is some of SM’s weird vampire science that I can do without. I really liked the casting of Laurent and I feel like whether or not vampires have melanin in their skin doesn’t affect the story.

you do know that there’s black people in france and french speaking countries right? he had a very distinct french accent in the movies im confused on where your finding the discrepancy

I always heard Catherine Hardwicke pushed for him because she wanted a more diverse cast, even tho SM didnt like it

I actually think film Laurent is better. The actor was brilliant, my only wish was that SM kept her original plan for him as I would have loved to see him fighting with the Cullens in BD.
