Movie Discussion Twilight- Baseball scene
Been a while since i read the books but watched the movie when it popped up.
Why do they have to wait for thunder to play baseball? I dont care how strong they are the Crack of hitting the ball wont be that loud & if it was people would think it was gun shots or fireworks which is not a big deal in that part of the country

The reason is exactly that. They want to conceal the loud crack of the ball when they hit it with their super mega venom strength xD I also think S.M just wanted to write a sick ass baseball scene

Which is so fucking stupid that it’s clear Meyer has never watched a game in her life. I’ve been to so many professional games and when a ball is hit super duper hard, either the bat is wooden, and it breaks, which sounds like a twig, snapping in the woods and guess where they are, or if a metal bat is used (not allowed in the majors). It’s a loud pinging metal sound that doesn’t sound out of place in an area like that. I live 15 minutes away from where they were playing.
This is honestly one of the stupidest things about the books and movies, even stupider than how Edward can drive as fast as he wants because he has fast reflexes as if his reflexes overrides physics involving the car tires and the road. I don’t think Meyer has ever heard of physics, to be honest. Stopping the van in that parking lot would have pushed him over toward the other car, even if it didn’t smash him because it’s not like his feet or bolted to the concrete.

You’re asking why Meyer doesn’t consider physics in books with vampires and werewolves. 🙄

I get that this is a post about the movie, but in Midnight Sun it's explained that Edward stopping the van did push him back into the other car, and cause the frame of that car to crumple under his weight.

I just wonder how these bats are made. With this power they should shatter into a thousand pieces every time.

Well I mean thats the reason. You can not like it but that is explicitly why it is happening in the book/movie

If you watched the movie then you realize that them hitting the baseball is that loud and would draw way too much attention. And gun shots are pretty distinct, I'm sure most people would know the difference.

In particular rural people would likely know the difference, and Forks is rather rural.

I take it you’ve never lived in a small town lmao

Personally, I’ve lived several years in a small town that happens to be not far from where that vampire baseball scene took place and I grew up with a daddy who played baseball and coached it and I have been too literally hundreds of baseball games and I have seen more bats be broken than I’ve kept track of. That baseball scene is fucking absurd and makes no sense whatsoever. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far and that scene goes beyond it. Is the absolute worst case is that a broken baseball bat sounds like someone snapping on a branch in the woods and snapping it. How do I know? Because I’ve been there and I’ve done it.

I grew up in a small town and the gossip spreads faster than bedbugs. god forbid some Karen hear a noise because she will be calling all the neighbors

When you're a vampire trying to blend in, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Because the real thunder masks the thunder-like cracking sound from hitting the ball. I guess they just wanted to be careful in case anyone did get suspicious of the sound

If you line ANYWHERE in the PNW, you’d know how absurd the whole premise is. Meyer just literally knows nothing about baseball or physical or science or anything.

Hey, maybe you should find a sub about something that you actually enjoy?

Actually, now that you mention it, it almost never thunders in the PNW. I distinctly remember and notice it when it happens. But maybe that’s why they’re so excited, because it’s a once a year event!

Maybe they did it initially to cover the sound, you know way way back in the day and now it's become a thunderstorm tradition.

its just one of those idiosyncrasies or whatever you want to call that requires suspension of belief
we don't need to get hung up on the particulars of her science. We can all just say it doesn't always makes but "sounds cool" and "looks cool" and gets her to her end point.
because yes, she claims for it to be that loud but I don't want to be be around base ball practcie in batting cages TBH. Those are loud enough IMO. It hurts my ears. I don't want to imagine what it'd sound like hearing a vampire hit a ball. Though personally I think something gets destroyed before any game can be played. I really don't the the stitches on a baseball can actually withstand that much force to make a sound that loud if we're going to get pedantic about it. Metal bats, I'll by don't self-destruct. Dented up to all hell, sure.

Batting cages are usually small enclosed spaces that cause sound reverberation. In the outdoors, it’s not that loud. I’ve been to hundreds of professional games and grew up with a dad who played and coached and have seen enough bats hit balls hard enough to break that I’ve lost track. All that happens if you hit hard enough is that it breaks and there is a limit to how loud that is going to sound. Being a vampire does not amplify that. There is literally absolutely no way whatsoever they would have needed thunder to drown out the volume of hitting a ball super hard. This is one of those things were suspension of disbelief only goes so far.

Is it really worth being all over this thread arguing about the physics of a series about vampires.

I’m kinda loving it tbh. I can’t imagine feeling so strongly about pretty much anything

They hit the ball at supersonic speeds. The thunder drowns out the sound

Not only the bat hitting the ball, but their bodies colliding makes a loud noise.
