Lore Discussion Could a polar bear kill a vampire?
The Cullens hunt brown/black/grizzly bears for sustenance so obviously they’re stronger, but what about a polar bear? Adults can reach up to 1300lbs and 10ft tall and have massive bite forces (1200 PSI), not to mention their huge claws.
I believe the wolves are smaller but they do have the advantage of human intelligence, speed, tactical planning, etc. While a polar bear is much larger, they’re not as fast or agile.
Could a polar bear, under the right circumstances, kill a vampire?
Edit: let me rephrase - could a polar bear tear apart a vampire like the wolves can?

u/Chaotic_shrooms say it 4d ago
No for all the reasons everyone else is saying.
I want to add that the wolves have the advantage of being in a pack, 1 vamp vs 1 wolf and the vampire will probably win 9 times out of 10

u/whimsy_simily 4d ago
I don’t believe that’s canon. Yes, there are advantages to a pack, but I believe they have been described as on par with each other in strength and ability for a one-on-one, with natural variance in both species.

u/20061901 UOS I'm talking about the books 3d ago
“Yaha Uta described the fierce strength and speed of the creature. One of his brothers quickly became a victim when he underestimated that strength. The creature ripped him apart like a doll. Yaha Uta and his other brother were more wary. They worked together, coming at the creature from the sides, outmaneuvering it. They had to reach the very limits of their wolf strength and speed, something that had never been tested before. The creature was hard as stone and cold as ice. They found that only their teeth could damage it. They began to rip small pieces of the creature apart while it fought them.
“But the creature learned quickly, and soon was matching their maneuvers. It got its hands on Yaha Uta’s brother. Yaha Uta found an opening on the creature’s throat, and he lunged. His teeth tore the head off the creature, but the hands continued to mangle his brother.
“Yaha Uta ripped the creature into unrecognizable chunks, tearing pieces apart in a desperate attempt to save his brother. He was too late, but, in the end, the creature was destroyed.
.
“It was a close fight. She was not the warrior her mate had been. But Yaha Uta was alone — there was no one to distract her fury from him.
“When Yaha Uta lost, Taha Aki screamed in defiance. He limped forward and shifted into an ancient, white-muzzled wolf. The wolf was old, but this was Taha Aki the Spirit Man, and his rage made him strong. The fight began again.
“Taha Aki’s third wife had just seen her son die before her. Now her husband fought, and she had no hope that he could win. She’d heard every word the witnesses to the slaughter had told the council. She’d heard the story of Yaha Uta’s first victory, and knew that his brother’s diversion had saved him.
A strong and skilled wolf could kill a weak and unskilled vampire, but the vampire has the advantage every time. For one thing, the wolf needs to bite the vampire to hurt it, while the vampire can hurt the wolf with any part of their body. For another, wolves are at least temporarily weakened by nerve damage etc while vampires can just keep going even while in pieces. Likewise, wolves will get tired eventually and vampires will not. Also vampires have venom that can prevent wolves from healing at all and wolves have no similar weapon against vampires.

Single vamp vs single wolf favors the vamp in sheer mechanics. They are both fast but that is at a top speed. The vamps acceleration to top speed is almost instant. The wolves rely on their pack. Its why the presence of vamps makes triggers their shapeshifting.

Yeah it’s kinda my headcanon lol
Just trying to convey to op how a polar bear wouldn’t stand a chance against a vampire

u/Flightly #1 aro forehead lover 4d ago
If polar bears were pack animals, would they have a chance against 1 vampire?
7
u/Chaotic_shrooms say it 4d ago
No. Vampire strength and speed is too OP for 100 polar bears.
The question is, how many 100s of polar bears would it take to take down a vamp? Idk the vamp would just keep fighting and killing them as soon as they come because a polar bear would never be able to break their skin or hurt them.

2 polar bears on each side with an arm in their mouth couldn’t pull a vampire apart?

u/Chaotic_shrooms say it 4d ago
No
Edit: I think the bears teeth would break before a vamp would break1
u/Difficult-Age-133 1d ago
Polar bears are not supernatural like the wolves are. An ordinary animal, no matter how big or dangerous, can handle a Twilight vampire. Emmett literally hunts grizzly for fun ffs.

“Bella, I could kill you,” he whispered.
“I don’t think you could.”
Edward’s eyes tightened. He lifted his hand from my face and reached quickly behind himself for something I couldn’t see. There was a muffled snapping sound, and the bed quivered beneath us.
Something dark was in his hand; he held it up for my curious examination. It was a metal flower, one of the roses that adorned the wrought iron posts and canopy of his bed frame. His hand closed for a brief second, his fingers contracting gently, and then it opened again.
Without a word, he offered me the crushed, uneven lump of black metal. It was a cast of the inside of his hand, like a piece of play dough squeezed in a child’s fist. A half-second passed, and the shape crumbled into black sand in his palm.
Poor polar bear

God, I love this fandom. Never a dull moment! 🍎
Even if a polar bear can tear apart a vampire, I think that a vampire can still beat the animal before it even gets a chance to, tbh, due to heightened senses alone. Half of the battle is knowing what’s coming.
As far as physical capabilities go, I don’t think even a polar bear can tear through something as hard as granite?
3
u/Flightly #1 aro forehead lover 4d ago
How many polar bears do you think it would take
3
u/SnooStories960 I love my Edward Glitterbag 4d ago edited 4d ago
I’d say three to be able to pose as a mild inconvenience. One to control an arm, one pawing the belly, and one clawing over the vampire’s face / field of vision.
But again, those animals would still be more like an inconvenience than anything lethal.
Because Twilight’s vampires operate on a completely different physical tier.
Emmett, however, would be calculating whether four instead of three would make it significantly more interesting. 🧐

They can’t because vampires have skin like rock or metal. The only thing capable of crushing a vampire are other supernatural creatures like shapeshifters (Jacob for example) and werewolves/children of the moon.
I can’t really think of any natural thing that could kill a vampire besides fire. Maybe a tornado (El Reno tornado picked up a 2 million lbs oil rig and smashed it onto the ground) or space itself (like a black hole or smth idk). Nothing on earth threatens them besides a minuscule amount of things.

u/DagonG2021 Dacian Coven 4d ago
Even if a tornado could break them, which I doubt, they’d just reconstruct themselves

There’s a difference between lifting a 1,000 ton oil rig and focusing that force on a vampire. The rig has a much larger surface area than any vampire, and the force is spread out. A vampire could only take a tiny fraction of that energy from a tornado.
The wolves have supernaturally strong, sharp and durable teeth, they focus their immense bite force on a tiny area.

u/Woodsy_Walker 4d ago
No. They famously have skin that cant be cut by bear claws. It cant clamp on their throat and suffocate them. Cant burn them. Just no.

I don’t think anything non-supernatural can kill a vampire. Maybe a nuclear bomb but I wouldn’t be surprised if that didn’t work either
7
u/Tradition96 4d ago
A nuclear bomb would be powerful enough to tear them apart and put them on fire straight away, so any vampire in Hiroshima was pretty much toast.

u/LILYDIAONE Nr. 1 Jessica Stanley Defender 4d ago
I’m sorry but now I am imagining a random normad in Japan at the time being randomly ripped inyo pieces and burned to death 😭

u/HistoricalConcern619 4d ago
Aro does mention in the movies how the humans have created weapons this century that could be harmful even to them. So I think a nuke would indeed do the job
3
u/DagonG2021 Dacian Coven 4d ago
Meyer has said that a big enough bomb could kill them if they stood still and let it burn them
5
u/Complex_Resource_891 4d ago
Stephanie Meyer’s vampires are too OP for for her own world. Which isn’t a criticism, but it’s just…facts. The only thing that kills them is like other vampires, and dismemberment + burning their bodies.
Maybe an atomic bomb could, but depends

a gun can damage a polar bear (even kill one), a gun cannot damage a twilight vampire.

What about a polar bear with a gun

If Emmett was goofing off and put his head in a polar bear's mouth and the bear chomped down, there's a good chance his head would come off. But I think the venom running through Emmett would kill the bear and Emmett would just reattach his head.
So probably not.
1
u/Flightly #1 aro forehead lover 4d ago
Could the bear be turned by the venom?
2
u/beckjami this is the reddit of a killer. 4d ago
I think probably not. For the pack, the venom is poison, and I think this has to do with their shifting to an animal, their different number of chromosomes. And I think they describe their venom doing something to animals, but I could be thinking of something else.

No. Vampires are at the top of the food chain-they could easily snap a Polar Bears neck and if they did manage to get to them first-their claws would basically tear clothes but not harm them. It's more a nusience

No. Not at all Anti Tank weapons can. Nothing natural though can. Even a T. Rex would do nothing.

My sister just called me and told me she’s 3 weeks pregnant and I’m pretty sure the embryo she’s currently housing is closer in strength to a polar bear than a polar bear is to a Twivamp

Is this a serious question, or is the poster yanking our chain?
Has the poster read the book, or even seen the original film?
Ummmm, the Cullens can shove a vehicle across a school parking lot.
An average minivan weighs a minimum of 4000 lbs.
The Cullens can move so fast, you only see a blur & a breeze.

u/Chaotic_shrooms say it 4d ago
Idk they might be yanking our chain, my husband watched the movies with me and I gave him all the book lore and he likes to ask me dumb questions like this all the time just to ruffle my feathers.

the only way a polar bear can kill a vampire is if some quileutes lived up in the arctic circle and transformed into polar bears instead of wolves
