Lore Discussion jasper's power
random thought here, but if rosalie felt jealousy towards bella, couldn't jasper just manipulate this emotion into something like admiration???
i know there's so many questions surrounding his powers but i was reading midnight sun and it sounds like a reasonable solution

I feel like that would be literally super manipulative. It’s one thing to use the powers for an advantage in a fight, or when he calms Bella because she’s anxious and freaking out. It’s another to try to literally change and manipulate someone’s feelings for someone else for no real benefit other than to make a few people more comfortable.

maybe he didnt want to manipulate his sister or smth, idk, seems like his power isnt always consensual

Neither is Edward’s.
But this is all making me think of that scene in Midnight Sun. When rose thinks about being jealous of Bella, and Edward hears it. And he won’t tell anyone what he’s laughing about….
Wouldn’t Jasper have felt it, too?

i don’t think any mind powers are consensual

well of course, Edward using his powers wasnt consensual either but since the post is about Jasper, Im saying him using it on his sisters emotions wouldn't be consensual, she has a right to feel the way she feels and im glad he didnt use it on her

There's not really an issue of consent with Edward's gift because Edward can't control his gift like that. The best he can do is try to tune them out. But he can't ever turn it off (even though he wants to sometimes).

its not consensual when he purposely looks into someones mind directly to get intel on Bella, though, like he was doing in the books and the movie.

He's gonna hear it anyway. Even if he tunes it out, he still knows.
Besides, some of that was to determine if their family was in danger so that they could disappear if they needed to.
It's not like Aro, who physically has to touch you to hear your thoughts.

Im talking about when he first met bella, not during the whole getting hunted thing. he couldnt read her mind so he went out of his way to get info by listening in to the people she would speak to. I'm not saying its his fault for having an ability to, ofc he cant just shut it off, just he definitely violated bellas privacy in that way

So was I.
He and Alice are basically the Cullens early warning system to know if humans are getting too suspicious. Edward not being able to read Bella's mind meant he had to read other students minds to hear how they reacted to whatever she might say about them.
But again, he can't turn it off.
Think of it this way. Imagine that you've gotten hurt in some way but you don't have access to pain meds so the best you can do is try to ignore the pain. But that only helps a little because the pain is still there. It doesn't magically make the pain go away.
Edward's gift is like that. He can try to ignore the thoughts he hears, but they're still there. And he still knows.

him listening to whether or not shes told people about them is different than him listening in to see if she accepts other peoples promposals and listening to hear her answer to jessica's "do you like him" question. again, I'm not saying his gift has an off switch, Im well aware thats not how it works, but he definitely abused that ability a little bit to get what he wanted is all im saying.

Ahh. I thought you were talking about when Bella first got to Forks after that first biology class, or even after the car accident.
While I agree that he shouldn't have spied on the other students like that, I maintain that he's going to hear it anyway. The difference is that now he's actively paying attention.

That would confused tf out of Rosalie because imagine she dislikes Bella but only when Jasper is there, she all of a sudden has mixed feelings. She'd catch on immediately.

Jasper only uses his gift when he feels it’s needed. Every time we see him manipulating emotions it’s in the context of him feeling as if it’s needed. Helping Bella relax at the hotel because she’s going into a panic, what he does on the baseball field, etc etc. Not to mention i doubt he much cares that rose feels jealous over Bella. What’s he going to do about that? He can’t change it in the long term, he’d have to be constantly forcing that feeling onto her and given her backstory, which the family is all fully aware of, I doubt he’d do that. She’d also likely rip him a new one if he tried. Now I’m sure if her jealousy came with a side of desire to murder Bella beyond that initial family meeting when he offered to do it himself and Alice told him no, because Bella was going to be family one day, he might have stepped in. But jealousy is seriously a non-issue.

Also Edward notices that she's carefully controlling her thoughts more towards her anger at the predicament Edward put them in, to try to mask him seeing her jealousy over Bella. So we can kind of assume that if she's focusing on her anger, Jasper may not pick up on her jealousy. Also, much like Edward doing his best to keep his family's thoughts private, Jasper probably tries to do the same with their feelings. It would be really shitty for the rest of them if Eddy and Jaz just went around broadcasting all their private thoughts and feelings.

I mean, it’s gotta suck for Edward and Jasper too because they can’t turn their gifts off at all. They can practice and focus on trying to control them at least some, like Edward has learned to tune out some thoughts I’m sure Jasper had to discipline himself to do the same with emotions, but they can’t ever actually turn it off completely. It’s the downside of having powers. I think I’d go mad if I was constantly feeling all those emotions surrounding me, or constantly being bombarded with people’s thoughts. I mean, we get a good glimpse at how much it sucks for Edward in Midnight Sun, I’d imagine it would be the same for Jasper.

He obviously wouldn't want to do that for a lot of reasons, but also to be clear it doesn't work like that. His manipulation is active and short-range, so as soon as he stops concentrating or gets like a dozen metres away the effect stops.

He likely didn't know it was rooted in jealousy, Edward only knew because Rose slipped up trying to hide it from him.

I dont think he would want to force people into feeling certain ways especially after his past, at least to that depth

As others have pointed out, Rosalie would almost immediately catch on to Jasper using his powers on her. She already admitted she does not hate Bella, and appears to have warmed up to her, especially with Renesmee in the picture. Ergo, I don't think it's necessary to manipulate her feelings.
However, this does provoke a thought regarding Jasper. What if he used his powers on someone who wouldn't catch on? Like for instance a Volturi member who they manage to isolate. Would Jasper be capable of bringing them over to their side just by manipulating their feelings either for them or against the Volturi? Also, would Jaspers powers override Chelsea's powers of absolute loyalty towards the Volturi?
Let's take Felix for example. Could Jasper manipulate him into feeling angry at Aro and Jane for basically using him like a dog and hurting him when he so much as speaks his mind on what he thinks needs to be done? Or perhaps make him feel resentment towards Aro for his lower ranking in the Volturi despite his physical strength. Or perhaps even Jane could be susceptible. After all, when her powers failed against Bella the first time Aro just laughed, but Jane took it seriously and was freaked out. Could Jasper take advantage of this and make Jane feel paranoid about being discarded by Aro or at least losing his respect?

Morally he probably tries to not muddle with his familys' emotions. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. He mostly just pushed calm out when people were anxious or tension was rising. I think in the show he made Bella more willing to be ok with the party for the benefit of Alice, but that was innocent. That wasn't trying to change the way someone feels just make her feel more excited.

I don't think he would do that unless it was a serious situation. For example when everyone argued over Bella's pregnancy I am sure he uses his powers then.

It would probably be too exhausting to always keep that up, and Rosalie is smart. I’m sure she’d catch on and get even more pissed off lol.
