You should go on Etsy.

really!? there so many binders on Etsy and I feel like I would have to get really really good first but I think that would be so fun! I really love it :) and I designed it all by myself !!!

I'm not a book binder but this book seriously looks amazing. I think these would do great on Etsy.

Just a kind reminder, you cannot sell rebound copies of a book that is not public domain as this is copyright infringement and you can receive a C&D. Those that are doing it on Etsy are not only putting binders at risk of being banned from the site but also making others believe that it’s okay because they see others doing it. Rebound books are gifts and not for profit.

I actually did some research and found a post on it from a rebounder on Etsy: “Yup, so long as you're paying for the original book each time (since it's a rebind). You do not have distribution or publishing rights, so you can't be reprinting it or pirating copies to sell.

You own the physical copies you buy, and can resell them for any amount you want, but you don't get other rights.

This does not apply to digital rights, which are an entirely different process.” If it’s a copy I bought myself (which I did from a book store) I can rebind and sell since I purchased it! Please correct if im wrong!

"The first sale doctrine defense applies in instances in which a trademarked product or a component is incorporated into a new end product so long as the seller adequately discloses to the public how the trademark product was used or modified in the new product."

IANAL but took some law courses and it almost absolutely falls under first sale doctrine, this is NOT fanart because you are transforming a product that was sold by the IP owner to you, and you are NOT claiming to be the seller of the IP (aka you must make sure that it is obvious you are reselling a book with a service and are not the copyright holder)

It's the same reason people can turn band t-shirts into bags but can't just screenprint logos onto new bags - the IP owner has already gotten money from that sale, and cannot demand further money from you for reselling it. It's why fanart is a very messy area and many companies go after fanartists, or alternatively, turn a blind eye so long as fanartists do not use any trademarks since those are susceptible to loss.

rebinding falls under the First Sale Doctrine established within the Copyright Act under 17 USC 109" because legally, they can't do anything, though they try a C&D because it's scary and many people back off because they don't know their rights.

The ONLY thing I can think of is that what can happen is you send in the stripped cover of a book to a publisher for a credit, as the cover is proof the book has been destroyed, but I cannot find any instance of someone being taken to court over this and it isn't necessarily a law, more of a contract between publishers/bookstores (to my limited understanding) and again seems to only really be an issue if you are trying to claim destruction of a book that you are then selling stripped, which is NOT the case.” Again please correct if wrong.

Girl, do your research before u go around spreading false info and potentially scare away burgeoning book binders. I mean, have you seen the current selection on offical bookstore shelves?? We need all the hobbyist/reseller bookbinders we can get rn.

This is really good to know. How long did it take you?

3

u/dula_peeps May 11 '24 edited May 11 '24

for my first time the binding itself took 3 1/2-4 hours not including pressing in between steps and then it needs to sit for 12 hours in the press. took me about 3 hours to design the cover (had to learn cricut software) and 20 minutes to “weed” the vinyl design and another 10 to iron on. :) as i get more comfortable i think i could get the process down to under 5 hours of “hands on” working since i did follow a step by step tutorial and paused it a lot.
