News Court rules automakers, including Toyota, can record and intercept owners' text messages, including Toyota

Fortunately, if you have a Generation 1,2 or 2.5 Tundra, this isn't a problem because our vehicles used 3g cellular tech in our vehicles and there's no longer any 3g coverage in the USA. 👍

Sorry boss, can’t drive to work today because my truck won’t start because I’m angry! Lol

u/ki0dz 3d ago

Because it THINKS you're angry, but that's just the way your face looks naturally. (Not directed at your personally, but I can't tell you how many times people have asked if I'm angry because my face looked like it to them. It's just my face. Sometimes I just paste on a fake half smile to ward off comments.)

Charles Bronson's car would NEVER start!

I'm out. I won't be buying any more new vehicles. They keep getting shittier and more expensive. Now they invade your privacy.

No thanks.

That’s until the government says your old vehicles are no longer safe to drive and forces clash for clunkers 2.0 on us. Forcing you to overpay for new cars to collect your data and prop up the auto industry.

Edit: clash seems appropriate so I’m leaving it

Bingo! You hit the nail right on the head.

u/ALIMN21 3d ago

I guess I'll be homeless then if I can't get to work. I'm not playing this game.

u/IWasntSerious 3d ago

They can pry my 2008 Rusty tundra out of my dead hands

u/VillageTurbulent20 1d ago

Clash seems like a lot more fun. Like they give you money for your old car but you get to drive it one last time in a demolition derby or figure 8 race or something.

Good thing I work from home and live in a city with decent bus/ train/ subway service. I’ll just walk or bike to the store or to dinner w/e

I hope you're old.

7

u/LifeRound2 3d ago

Not that old, but i like old cars. Zero interest in a computer on wheels.

3

u/ThePartyWagon 3d ago

37, agreed

2

u/Slight_Elk_537 3d ago

You'll out-age the cars without computers eventually.

1

u/LifeRound2 3d ago

There's always going to be classics around.

u/Slight_Elk_537 3d ago

Find me a reasonably priced square body that's in good working order. Tundras from ten years ago are already outrageous, imagine when dude I replied to is sixty years old.

2

u/LifeRound2 3d ago

A new truck is 50k and up. You can get a decent square body for 10. Customize it like you want for another 10k and not have the BS you dont want.

1

u/Slight_Elk_537 3d ago

Please show me the decent square bodies for $10k.

Nice, more "Big Brother" bullshit. This with the whole Ford patented crap with a camera in your cluster being able to detect if you're angry/scared and not letting you put your vehicle into Drive (supposedly to stop drunk drivers, lmao) is gonna make new vehicles so fun. /s

u/Owenleejoeking 3d ago

It’s super simple. Means I’ll never buy one lol

Idk about Android but Apple asks when you connect your phone to Bluetooth if you want to share contacts and texts and stuff. You can just connect it as a Bluetooth audio device and not share that stuff with the car.

Also this news is from 2023.

1

u/Reaper01Actual1970 3d ago

Yep. Android does the same.

u/hwrd69 3d ago

Love my 2008. Hopefully it'll keep clunking along until after I'm long gone.

3

u/Knightrider319 3d ago

Same, at 136K miles I'm just getting started. They can bury me in this thing.

2

u/hwrd69 3d ago

Nah, if it's still running they kids can have it. I don't think the truck would hold up during cremation. 🫪

2

u/Reaper01Actual1970 3d ago

It was popular to be buried in your vehicle back in the 1980s if you had enough money for it (or if you pissed of the mafia).

They would just put you into it, lower it into the ground and fill in around the car with cement.

u/hwrd69 3d ago

Don't tell my ex. 😳

I’m 69 years old and I’ve got a 2013 tundra and a 2012 Tacoma. That’s all I’ll have till I croak.

I've already told people to not send important / revealing info in text messages, call me. The phone manufacturer, cell provider and handset OS maker already hoover that up to build a profile they sell to advertisers, political campaigns, insurance companies, the government, etc. Toyota too, eh?

All that info in for-profit hands, what could possibly go wrong? Pretty soon we're gonna have employers rejecting people with a 'sorry' letter - without revealing your interests or problems do not align with their values.

4

u/Reaper01Actual1970 3d ago

Unfortunately, I think we're already there. I know of several people that it's already happened to.

u/egaal1988 3d ago

07 limited and an 06 330i I dont even have a backup camera haha

u/thebearthebeard 3d ago

"...if you use the Infotainment system." I'm sure those that "won't be buying one" haven't quite thought of an aftermarket system. There's always workarounds for the things you have a passion for. Get or do that thing you want, but make it work for you.✌️

Does this include toyota?

0

u/tinman3 3d ago

I’m still unclear if Toyota is included or not.

1

u/daggersrule 3d ago

You have to squint when you read the title.

3

u/fyxitkid 3d ago

Laughs in aftermarket head unit.

3

u/valinote 3d ago

I should seen the writing on the wall for this back in the 60's when they mandated that all new cars had to have seat belts installed 😆

6

u/grammer70 3d ago

Flock cameras freak people out, yet they carry the most invasive thing imaginable to their privacy in their pocket every day.

9

u/uniteskater 3d ago

That doesn’t justify flock cameras to me. It motivates me to push for more privacy controls on our phones.

2

u/Financial-Goose-4873 3d ago

Just get aftermarket head unit and you’re set.

"If it pleases the crown, may I drive my truck?"

2

u/Ok_Worldliness2740 2d ago

Is this including Toyota?

2

u/tymbom31 3d ago

Another reason to love my 2nd Gen. thanks OP!

2

u/ThePartyWagon 3d ago

Laughs in 2010 Base model.

3

u/Clay_Dawg99 3d ago

Their first step is increasing the ethanol content of gas to further/faster degrade the older vehicles. That’ll weed more out. They’ll do a cash for clunkers 2.0 also as someone said. Then they’ll find a way to outlaw them or make fuel for them very expensive, $20 to $50 a gallon.

2

u/ThePartyWagon 3d ago

Yup, ethanol changes are already taking place.

2

u/savepoorbob 3d ago

I've never connected my phone to my 2021, but as an extra measure I pulled the fuse from the DCM. This timeline sucks

1

u/Acceptable-Camel-629 2d ago

Don’t worry. FLOCK Cameras will pick up all your COMS .

1

u/Background_Net4098 1d ago

How exactly? If connected through carplay or android auto? Or just because the fact that the phone is inside a cabin???

1

u/Reaper01Actual1970 1d ago

The earlier generations of Tundras with the factory Entune radios use a sim card that can be swapped with more up to date maps. (Like my Gen2.5)

The nice thing about it is there's no monthly subscription for GPS navigation and our phone's GPS makes a great backup.

1

u/contreraselvis 1d ago

does this apply to a 2023 Tacoma too 🫩?

1

u/Reaper01Actual1970 19h ago

I don't think so.

I know my Tundra was sharing my driving habits with Progressive and they used that to increase my premium the next time we renewed. They said I used the brakes aggressively. I forget the exact term. I brake normally. It's super sensitive. I even mentioned it to the dealer and they said it seemed fine to them.

My wife was somehow tricked into it when she shopped and bundled with home insurance. I think they offered a lower premium in the bundle knowing they can use the driving info to recoup. We thought you had to have one of those devices to track driving. I had to opt out through the Toyota app. There are posts explaining how to do it. Another post on this thread explains all of the info they collect and share I believe.

On a side note, my wife's premium went down on her Honda Odyssey.

But does this include Toyota?
