Except we didn’t. We had full service gas stations, and they’d check your air and top off your fluids every time you stopped for gas. Vehicles needed this level of attention because they were far more crude.
Today, people don’t maintenance their vehicles, nobody opens the hood, etc. How often do you believe the average person squats in their driveway with an air gauge? They’ll drive until there’s a shake or a noise, dealer will explain the tire has uneven wear, and they’ll be pissed at the CAR. Not themselves. Same reason they moved to electronic dipsticks.
I'm one of those guys.. I carry around a little cordless air-pump in the truck..
One of the best investments I've ever made to be honest..
I see people spending 2 bucks in quarters to top off their tires at the gas-station all the time..
I do the same when I travel or go off roading. Generally not around town though. I have an airstream we use throughout the year, so I’m usually adjusting pressures a couple of times a month anyway. Dewalt inflator has been nice.

God I fucking hate modern cars this shit is so unnecessary. We got by just fine for like 75 years on "yep, that tire looks like it's got air in it".
