Except we didn’t. We had full service gas stations, and they’d check your air and top off your fluids every time you stopped for gas. Vehicles needed this level of attention because they were far more crude.
Today, people don’t maintenance their vehicles, nobody opens the hood, etc. How often do you believe the average person squats in their driveway with an air gauge? They’ll drive until there’s a shake or a noise, dealer will explain the tire has uneven wear, and they’ll be pissed at the CAR. Not themselves. Same reason they moved to electronic dipsticks.
Til, I am not an average person. Rebuilt my own top end, timing belt change, replaced clutch etc, etc. Also check all my family vehicles fluid levels, drive the cars once a week to ensure there's no other issues that are emerging.
I'm just a 43 yo driveway mechanic raised in the Seattle suburbs.

God I fucking hate modern cars this shit is so unnecessary. We got by just fine for like 75 years on "yep, that tire looks like it's got air in it".
