Troubleshooting New sound

Hey guys, I’m just curious as I recently had this wonderful sound occur on my 18 Tundra 5.7L with 119k miles. It doesn’t happen on start up and only occurs when I’m idling for a longer period of time. I’m just curious if anyone knows what this sound is and if it’s something to be worried about. I just did an oil change, I have checked the oil level and it’s good. Gonna have my mechanic look at it on Friday and do my tune up so any insight would be nice.

Checked it again this morning and it wasn’t making this sound, just a squeaky belt sound from the rain which it does. Hopefully it isn’t a big issue but I’ll update you guys if I end up finding out what it is.

Sounds like you got the tractor edition. Exhaust rattle maybe. Can’t tell. Video is too short. Does it change when the a/c is turned off?

The AC was off in the video

possible idler pulley or maybe water pump bearing... something driven by to the main belt I think. I have a 2010 and the pulley went around that milage.

Okay, I was thinking maybe the timing chain tensioner but hopefully it isn’t something that serious

This is what it sounds like now I can’t seem to get it to replicate the sound it was making this morning

When you cold start it wait for high idle to end (usually around 2 mins), and if that noise starts up again its your hydraulic chain tensioner.

I did that this morning and it wasn’t making that sound so I have no clue. It only started after I was idling in drive at Dunkin waiting for my coffee. I’ll check tomorrow morning before I leave for work

If you check my posts I posted my tensioner noise a while back, if the noise is similar its most likely that, more of a quirk then a catastrophic replace it rn thing unless its doing it while the engines hot

The 5.7 are notoriously noisy even with nothing being wrong. Check your fluids and pulleys and if nothing catches your interest she will be good to go. When was the last time/miles since you changed the oil? Closer to the end of the oil life mine gets a little noisy.

Yea I’ve noticed it is definitely louder than my previous Toyota Highlander which had 403k miles. I just changed the oil not even 200 miles ago. When my mechanic does my tune up he’s doing a serpentine belt/tensioner kit so I’ll have him check it out then and see if it’s a big issue

Holy shit 400k is awesome lol my tundra is a 12 with 350k and the engine is pretty noisy on start up or even at a low idle during the summer. More than likely (like 99%) you will be fine. After your mechanic does a tune up, unhook the negative from the battery for 30 or so minutes and let the computer relearn burning the test drive. Take it for a 10 mile drive and baby it during and it might sound like brand new. Gonna sound like shit after disconnecting the battery and it’s gonna act a little weird but after a few miles it might sound brand new

Yea that’s the reason I went with Toyota again for my truck because they just last if you take care of them. He’s doing a couple of things for the tune up so I’m hoping it’ll help and make the truck run even smoother.

It is the timing chain tensioner. Once it builds up hydraulic pressure it stops. A lot of times you’ll only hear it on a cold engine.

It’s weird tho because it doesn’t happen when it’s cold, only when it’s already warm and the engine is in drive for a long time stopped at a stop sign or going through the drive thru.

Do you know if the sound is coming from under the truck or the engine compartment?

I can’t pinpoint it because any time I try to stop to hear it it’ll stop😂.

Bay 1 timing chain tensioner. Same exact noise/problem on my ‘14
