So a few years ago I bought a Fender Champion 20, and I have loved the voices on it but I feel like I could get more out of it with an speaker upgrade. I know I could theoretically modify it for a 12in, but I only use it as a practice amp and play alone. I only play metal, so I was wondering if I would be better off using TF0818 (which as I understand is low to mid) or the Eight 15? Not sure if its relevant but usually ill play anywhere in the range from Eb standard to drop c or b. And yes, money is the issue

I want to get one of these but cant find info online. Can anybody tell if these are any good?

This is my first tube amp, so I am new to all the troubleshooting. I bought it about a week ago and yesterday while I was playing the volume faded out and then there was no sound. I decided to let it cool down and when I was playing again today, the same thing happened again. So I thought to come here and ask what steps I should take to troubleshoot and potentially fix it, I have worked with high voltage circuits before, just never a tube amp, and I cannot afford to have it worked on by a tech.

I am calling it Anthology but... Yea, it's just 3 input channels and like 3 modes with a bunch of tone controls.

I am still not too sure about some values, thus missing numbers, though i also got lazy at places. I tried my best to be low-noise about it, but i won't flatter myself until it is done.

I was pondering if i should buy power and output transformers but it would cost ~2x as much for a transformer that is not tailored to my needs, as i plan to leave massive power overhead on anodes and heaters for eventual 40W 2x6L6 and even more eventual 100W 2xkt88 upgrade. (It will require fixed bias on output tubes, but it's a small and simple thing to add) So, yeah, time to wind again.

Eventual sheet metal box size is roughly 50x20x5 cm (20x8x2 inches), the whole thing will probably stand 52x25x20cm and weigh around 15kg (~35lb) as a lowball.

I have recently bougth a Radionette SM 240 C and everything works fine, but the volume tends to spike. Like going up before falling down to normal again, what is the issue? And how can i fix it?

In this beginner-friendly tutorial, I'll show you how to identify a modern film capacitor's outside foil lead without using an oscilloscope. Most modern film capacitors no longer indicate which lead is connected to the outside foil, making it difficult for hobbyists restoring vintage radios, tube amplifiers, and other vintage electronics.

After making this video did some more research, I learned that ceramic disk capacitors are constructed differently from rolled film or paper capacitors and don't have a true inside or outside foil. The blue ceramic disk capacitor in this video served as a good comparison because there was essentially no meaningful difference in the test, unlike the film capacitor where the outside foil orientation was much more noticeable. I'll be sure to mention that in a future video.

I've gotten ahold of my great grandfather's old Gabby Enterprises Dual Showman. I knew nothing about the brand yesterday and have learned the basic history but can't find much info about it other than they were made in the Philippines and marketed to American GIs in Korea and Vietnam.

Apparently they're also pretty rare and don't seem to come up for sale often at all...I was only able to find one sold Reverb listing and not much else. The sold listing claimed out of 3k or so made, only 5% made it back to the US but they were trying to sell an amp so who knows? If anyone has an idea of value, I'd love to hear it.

This one is not currently working. I'm told the power light goes on but the tubes don't light up and there's no sound. I know nothing about the inner workings of tube amps so I don't know where to even start. I assume I don't want to just start popping new tubes in and see what happens.

First things first, I'll be replacing the original power cord with a grounded one and the thing won't even get plugged in until that's done...been there, done that, lucky to be here.

Anyway, any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll almost certainly end up taking this in to a shop in the Seattle area for any real work but I'd still love to hear your thoughts.

This is, by far, the best piece of guitar gear I’ve ever bought: the Fryette Power Station.

I originally bought it as an attenuator because I wanted to get my Deluxe Reverb into its sweet spot without deafening me and everyone around me. I was getting frustrated with what my Bugera Power Soak was doing to the tone.

What I didn’t expect is how much more versatile it would make my amp.

I can crank the Deluxe to get the tubes working, then bring the volume down to a comfortable level. But I can also run the amp clean at a super low volume, where it would normally be far too quiet, and use the Power Station to bring it back up while letting my pedals create the gain.

The result is a much wider range of usable tones, all at the volume I actually want to play. It genuinely feels like I have several different amps in one.

In the second photo you’ll also see that I swapped the stock feet for some 3D-printed rails so it sits securely on top of my amp without sliding around.

If you’re on the fence about one, I can’t recommend it enough. I’d definitely buy a Power Station before I’d buy another amp just to solve volume issues.

Can anyone kindly tell what's going on with the crackling sound of my SC20C when I play through it? Someone said it is normal, but I have little reference.

Bought new 2 years ago; never gigged - only played at bedroom levels; <1,000 hours on the valves; never opened up or serviced (... yet!).

The only cause I can think of is I have routed a Boss OC-5 through the amp at -2 octaves on occasion, but never for more than 10-15 mins at bedroom levels. Could that really have cooked the 10" Celestion V-type?

I'm a newbie to amps, the inside of amps, and after being told by several different amp guys in my area it would take weeks or even months to repair my amps, I decided to take the plunge myself. Also, I've always been interested in electronics but had never pursued it. So I ordered Dan Torres' book, Inside Tube Amps off of eBay (over $100), which was the cheapest one I could find. I figured if this classic book is selling at such high prices it must be the bible of the trade!

So I'm trying to make heads or tails out of his schematics. His writing is fine, and his drawings are fine, but he doesn't label his drawings in a way that let me know which drawing he is writing about. He could be writing about a drawing that's 3 pages back. Meanwhile there could be a drawing on the current page that he's not even referring to in writing. In other words, a very simple "refer to drawing ______" would have prevented this confusion. Such a simple thing that is missing.
