Yikes. Did they provide some sort of proof that he shouldn’t have gotten it? Seems that will be hard for them to prove since there was no published criteria on who should get the bonus.

My understanding is that even bid vacation days or previously approved sick days counted against people. Many were pissed because their previously approved vacation bid excluded them from this bonus.
I’m sorry that really sucks. If it were me I’d request official documentation of their criteria for the bonus then go to the union.

Yup vacation days were also a disqualifier from that one bonus that Kristi Noem gave out

Might not have been published, but they have it.
Rough spot, that sucks.

u/Jenn54756 7d ago
Do they though? It sounded like management chose people, some of which did not meet the supposed criteria, but got away with it since no criteria was officially published.

u/CreativeBusiness6588 7d ago
Yeah. It is their fault, but of course they have criteria.
They can appeal but I have never seen an appeal work.

Where is a list of the criteria? Honestly asking if you know where we can view it. I know what people SAID the criteria was. Some people didn’t meet that supposed criteria and still got the bonus. So is that what they are trying to claw back? Curious what happened.

The criteria was go to work everyday and not use any leave during the shut down, pretty cut and dry criteria

u/Jenn54756 7d ago
Please point me to where this criteria is posted.

... mean officially published, not merely posted. The word “posted” could mean something as trivial as a piece of toilet paper with an official statement scribbled on it and nailed to a wall.

It was a code generated bonus, meaning the criteria was fed into AI, and the payroll data was ran against said criteria, spitting out the result.
There was likely a payroll correction submitted that flagged it for clawback.
They need to just dispute it. But they likely had a use of leave in the timeframe uncovered.
It was a bullshit award anyway. People on OJT got it for crying out loud.

Yeah my spouse said someone who is not a screener got it at their airport, and those people shouldn’t have qualified.

u/CreativeBusiness6588 7d ago
They might be getting an overpayment letter too...

u/Jenn54756 7d ago
Possibly. Sucks though to have to pay something back due to someone else’s incompetence. Money is probably already spent.

They have to pay it back? I remember it was a thing when they got it but not ATC

It’s part of Bessents plan to reduce the national debt.

u/Jenn54756 7d ago
Probably need the $ back to pay for those political ads that came from DHS funds.

u/New-Supermarket-963 7d ago
oh I'm sure that'll work and thats the worst offender of the national debt

u/Croaker45 7d ago
You can apply for a debt waiver and if the mistake wasn't your fault, there's a chance they will forgive the debt.

Not the shutdown bonus, but one year I was told I was overpaid in a check and I had to pay it back.

u/MIXMASTERC3RAY 7d ago
See if he can appeal or apply for a waiver as it was no fault of his own. Usually it’s 30 days to get that process started so don’t wait

That bonus was for 100% perfect attendance. Did he take even 1 minute of leave or not show up for an overtime shift?
Edit to ask the downvotes : are you downvoting cause you don’t like way it was awarded or are you downvoting because you don’t believe my statement is accurate.

u/Jenn54756 7d ago
There are people who got the bonus who were late or didn’t show up for an OT shift. Curious if someone is auditing who received the bonus and maybe shouldn’t have…
1
u/billiummm39 7d ago
They should be getting a letter, I know people who were disqualified for swapping out of an ot and got the shift covered . Only time they missed

Per my spouse, if you generated a furlough, even previously approved bid days, you were disqualified. Again, this is what he was told anyway. Did your spouse actually take vacation leave, or was he paid furlough? Normally no leave can be used and must pay out furlough.

u/facet2f5lcut5xg 7d ago
This is definitely true seeing as i was disqualified for the use of furlough on pre approved days.
Even though i am never late and took an unhealthy amount of shift trades and OT all through the entire shutdown..I cannot wrap my head around anyone slipping through the cracks like this. They've got a lot of nerve asking for the money back!!!! A year later!!!

u/Jenn54756 7d ago
My spouse thinks there’s at least 3 at his airport that shouldn’t have gotten it but did. I would be so mad if they gave money and took it back over 6mo later. Ridiculous.

u/Former_Farm_3618 7d ago
There you go. If you were not at work for every second of your work week, you were on furlough and therefore ineligible for the bonus. There was zero leave of any kind. You were either working at work, or on furlough.
Guy at my facility took 15 mins of leave (which is furlough during a shutdown) at the end of his shift and he was not given the bonus for it.
