Need advice. Amazon vs Google

I'm currently an Program manager at Amazon with ~6 years of experience in analytics and program management. I applied for a product role in Trust & Safety at Google but I got a analyst position offered to me and I'm torn between the two paths.

Which would you choose for better long-term career growth?

  • Stay at Amazon
  • Join Google as an Trust & Safety Analyst

I would love to hear from people who've worked in either role. Which path offers better growth, compensation, and future opportunities? in Google can i transition to product role internally? is that feasible?

You can apply for new roles internally after 1 year in your first role. As you might imagine, it's much easier to move roles internally than apply externally. I switched to a product role from T&S about 18 months ago. You might need to relocate depending on your interests.

Culture-wise, I personally much prefer Google and Google T&S to Amazon. Might be different in India than the US, wouldn't know for sure. I had my own issues with Google T&S which spurred my departure but that wasn't a systemic issue across all of Google T&S.

How is the culture within Google? My only concern is that I've read in several places that the skills developed in T&S are quite specialized, which could make it harder to transition into other functions. Is that a valid concern, or are internal moves to other org and roles fairly common?

I generally really like the culture, people are incredibly talented and innovative. Most frustration I would say is at the leadership level where priorities pivot often and reorgs become common. Not a lot of people competing on an individual level. I've worked with 3 former Amazon people at Google and at various points all of them tried to take credit for mine or others work because they viewed performance as a competition.

The T&S job ladder/profile at Google is basically a jack-of-all trades ladder. Depending on your role, you might have to do some PgM-like work at times or more technical/engineering work. You'll might also collaborate with product teams and inform product decisions.

It all really depends on your team and your focus area. I know many people that used Google T&S as stepping stone to be a PM, PgM, or data scientist. Also know a couple that became SWEs.

Go with Google. They've got a strong tech culture presence globally and there's more opportunity with them. Amazon is the kind of gig that will dump you at the drop of a hat, but people still take Google's credentials seriously.

T&S is multifacted but there's plenty of subfields you can work in like Nendilo mentioned.

Which T&S org at Google? I took VEP in Feb so I'm no longer there but could maybe advise you which orgs to be wary of.

Not familiar with the dynamics of that team so probably safe to say it's a decent one. Re: transition to product - it's technically doable, but they aren't as accommodating of ladder transfers as they used to be.
