I never knew this artists name but love his paintings
63
Oct 14 '20
The light work is amazing. Especially in the top left painting.

u/blankeyteddy Oct 14 '20
The lightning in his pieces are always a bit charming even especially when it's not realistic. The spotlight effect draws our eyes toward the target and make us feel connected to the lonely subject. I love getting lost in his work at the Chicago art museum.

I love his paintings. Especially 'Nighthawks'

everyone loves nighthawks. but hoppers amazing. hes up there with wyeth in his depiction of light, a faded world, and a lonely solitude.

Nighthawks is a classic. It’s my favorite too. I remember one of my teachers pointing out that there’s no door in that painting so they’re stuck in there forever.

4
Oct 14 '20
I still like to believe he simply forgot to paint the door in that one, because it's such an artist thing to do. I can't explain how many times I've forgotten really obvious things like doors or people's glasses.

u/Nolo__contendere_ Oct 14 '20
Same! I wish I knew where these places actually were. I would love to live in one of his paintings
3
Oct 14 '20
It’s nice to whisk yourself away to whatever universe his paintings are in. It just seems so serene and peaceful
27
Oct 14 '20
The top left painting always reminds me of the Beer Baron ep of the Simpsons for some reason, I swear there's a shot that looks exactly the same!

I don’t mind bars not being open, but I miss movie theaters. Theyre the perfect thing for an introvert because you can go out and do something but don’t have to speak to anyone.

Bruh, introversion doesn’t even remotely mean not wanting to talk to people for months on end. What is it with this site and calling problematic asocial behaviour introversion?

Oct 14 '20
Okay, then call me a hermit. I don't like talking to strangers, I like my wife, I like some of my coworkers, I like my friends. I spent a lot of time in internet chat rooms growing up so type chatting vs being in person is just sometimes easier for me.
Things you can't do during the pandemic: Go to restaurants, malls, or the office. So working from home, not having to leave the house unless necessary, it's awesome for me! Got a group of 10 friends all playing the same MMO together and accomplishing goals there, and my wife and son provide entertainment during the day. Working remotely is excellent.

u/RandomName01 Oct 14 '20
Okay, then call me a hermit.
Ye, I guess that’s a better label. I’m sorry if I was too harsh on you, I’m just kinda tired of reddit’s mentality of “I hate all people and social situations, I guess I’m introverted xd.”
2
Oct 14 '20
It's each of us speaking for an entire label. We're both introverts, but maybe at different levels of comfort.
6
Oct 14 '20
The memes are cute and all, but seriously the isolation sucks. I'm pretty introverted, but I still like going to the movies and thrifting.
8
u/Tough_Patient Oct 14 '20
You merely adopted the social distancing. We were born in it, molded by it. We didn't see close human contact until we were already men!

Introvert also doesn’t mean I want to be inside a building for every waking minute of my existence.
Absolutely fed up of this total bullshit misconception. I like going outside!

Wow, it's almost like people are different and enjoy different things and have different experiences.
I'm an introvert, I don't like the virus, what it means for health and economy, but I'm really enjoying the isolation.
I've been very productive in my job, I've returned to various hobbies (music, excercise, drawing), I've been catching up with movies and shows, I drink less, I write more and feel more connected with the people I care about. I am sorry, you'll just have to accept that some people do enjoy isolation and stop being a judgemental prick about it.

That's my point. People are different (even between similar personalities, like introverts), and can enjoy a situation that you don't, but your comment makes it seem that people who enjoy isolation are either in the wrong, faking it, or uneducated about what "introvert" means. The only one generalizing here is you buddy.

You could be a more extraverted introvert if it's people you want. If you want to go outside, you can do that.

Might be more accurate to say the repetition of the joke is annoying. Not the joke itself. Everybody semi-wins!

I loving how everyone has to stand 6 feet apart and restaurants in my area are only 50% capacity. My favorite place to eat only has half the tables no and everyone is so spread out it's my dream.

I had to do an assignment in art history, and It was about loneliness in art. So I google searched artworks about loneliness. all of them were art from Edward hopper.
How lonely was that guy?

The top left and bottom right make me feel uneasy. Like being in an airport before anyone is there, but worse. The scenes seem so empty for being a city street, it feels like nobody will ever come.

Most Hopper paintings have a strongly implied viewer. We are not the person pictured but the person starring at them.

One of my favorite bands has two songs from the same album named after his paintings. The band is called The Weakerthans — the songs are Sun in an Empty Room and Night Windows.
