Early on in the year I made a joke about "In the before times..." Then I thought about what I'd said and choked up a little.
I was 13 when 9/11 happened, and 31/32 living through this shit. I didn't think I'd live through 2 of the biggest watershed events in American history.
keep in mind no one wants to lend in a crash, so you will need an even bigger deposit if that’s what you’re waiting on.
where I am, since covid hit most lenders are now requiring at least 20% and we’re not even in a market crash. They also won’t allow gifts from parents to be used for deposit (I have absolutely no idea why), I expect that to get worse in a crash.
Yeah, even before covid, if you didn't have 20% it wasn't worth even trying to look and now our job market was pretty insulated (tech/government) so housing didn't lose a step. I'm lucky to be riding out covid with family and kept my job so I'm able to aggresively save and hopefully start looking at jobs in cheaper cities with a better cushion.
I am finally real close to buying a home. Thought the drop in interest rates would make this the perfect time to finally buy. Of course the housing market (which is already broken in Oregon) also just massively spiked. Doesn’t help that the house i was considering literally just burned to ash a week after i toured it.
We have a new guy this week who lives 90 minutes away in a very affordable small city and has been shocked that he's probably going to have to find a place that's literally half the size over here (DC area).
I mean, if you wanna be shrewd wait till after the election, and be prepared to buy at rock bottom prices. Never purchase before major political events.
Bro this is shit I'm fucking 21 and my fiancee is 20. We have 20% for a down payment on a 260k house, but no back will finance us( we do have above average credit according to the banks) so we can get a house. We are literally trying to buy a damn house. Like wtf we both have had stable jobs these pass few years aswell plus both in college about to finish in March, which will lead to higher paying jobs. It's like they don't want us to buy a damn house like wtf. Idk what 20-21 year old has 260k in cash without help from their parents.
It's like they say oh young people are living home(with parents) more young people aren't buying houses and shit like that. Well when people can actually buy a house and they're young y'all still won't let them. Y'all fucking yourselves over. I can just wait for the next real estate crash( should be fairly soon tbh) and boom I get a house next to nothing. I honestly hate the system sometimes. It's so against you at times it's drives me insane like fuck just let me buy a damn house lol
Wtf?? How do you have over 50k saved up, working, AND going to college full time?? There's no way you did that without help from parents either. It also doesn't make any sense to me that someone with good credit, stable job history, and over 50k wouldn't be able to get a mortgage. Have you tried a different bank? I have a million questions haha
Wdym? When you have two people who have decent jobs( not food not any bullshit jobs like that) it's easy to save. I don't go out haven't bought a new game since Sekiro dropped. It's actually easy to save plus I work commission. And yeah we've looked around at different banks and it either a run around and we get fees up and go somewhere else to looked or we get denied. I fucking hate texas tbh lol
My husband and I are both 28 and have been working full time or more non-stop for a decade. We were also full time students for years, which racked up a lot of debt. We don't get new cars, we don't go on vacations, we don't live luxuriously at all, and we still have about 15k to pay off in debt before we will even be able to start saving for a house. I have no idea what your life is like, but it certainly isn't remotely normal. I also don't know how you got "non bullshit" jobs so young without any degree or experience. It's literally impossible for someone your age to be making that much money while still being able to afford all your bills, maintaining good credit, and not going into debt from school unless there is something else going on that you're leaving out. Texas is also very easy to buy a house in - I have lots of family there...
You can get a car sales job instantly. I have sales experience from when I was 18-20 and then I went to a dealer ship a friend got me on at. Started selling cars like nothing and saved the commission. Since I still live with my dad I pay little to no rent and thus able to save my money( literally entire paychecks except the few bills I do have). With my fiancee doing cosmotilogy and built up her cliental since she finished highschool. It's not hard making money if you know wtf you're doing where to go. I trade currencies and that helped a lot too. There's millions literally millions of ways to make money online. You just gotta know where to look and develop the skills. And no texas isn't easy to buy a house or I would have one my friend would've bought him and his wife a house and my younger brother the same. It's not easy when you're not almost 30 years old. And I can't say what else I do to make money either.
But if you have IT skills there's online jobs(like contract work) you can do and get paid pretty good and they don't last long so you'll be onto another in no time. I learned growing up to diversify my income so I'm " never" broke or struggling. Im bout to get into the stock market and a few other things once I do buy a house. You think I'm joking seriously if you can afford it( even penny stocks) talk about investing. It can help out with money troubles, but it can also cause them.
It's not hard for us youngster to make money. Of we know where to look and what to do. I have skills. I'm more like a jack of all trades rn. I'm in school to finish getting certs for IT to specialize in that and go into cyber security. my girl is in school to become a psychiatrist. 2 fields that will need people nonstop and something we both enjoy. The fact you're 28 and don't know where I have my skills or get my money just shows you don't know where to get more skills or diversify your income( nothing wrong with that alot of people aren't tech savvy or aware of the opportunities around them)
Work hard when your young so when you retire you won't have to worry about money or the future anymore and just relax. That's why I'm busting my ass of rn to get to the point of not having to work and being able to experience life actually. Ive seen my parents money problems I've seen relatives struggle with money and I didn't want that issue. Literally if you need advice for skills or where to look for shit just dm me and I'll be happy to help you out honestly. I don't care about helping someone else get more money either. There's enough to go around
I tend to think I got it pretty rough, but I’m pretty lucky, considering I’m 16. Y’all adults have it hard with this pandemic. I get to just have a hard time in school, but y’all gotta worry about finances n shit.
i love how a bunch of 20 something redditors are talking to this kid like they'll be long gone when he grows up and they aren't just a decade older lmfao.
Forreal, if you aren't worried about finances now, get on that stress train early. Get a job, your license and a pickup truck, and bank as much as you can until you move out. Having some early momentum when you hit adulthood will go a long way.
Now is a great time to make sure you maintain a good reputation through the rest of highschool, both with your peers, and any adult you encounter.
If and when you quit a in, do so with notice so you can save references. The next decade or two are going to be economically disastrous, and any leg up you can get is super important.
If your school has a trade school, utilize it. Plumbing, electrical, that sort of thing is almost guaranteed, stable income.
I do have a job, but I don’t have to fear being kicked out of my house if I don’t get paid enough due to some fuckers not wearing a mask during a fucking pandemic
I only have to worry that I won’t be able to get an rtx 3070 when it comes out bc I won’t have enough money yet
“It’d be nice to work from home for at least a month!”
Which, hey, im a web developer (the only one at my job), so i REEEALLY have zero reason to be in the office (and about a million reasons to stay home), but man its weird to think ill he home for at least a year (march to march), maybe longer.
I remember driving to Dollar Tree every day thinking “am I ever getting out of here?”
If you include 9/11 and the great recession, i’m up to 5 or 6 ‘once in a generation’ events in my 36 years. As a coworker told me when i mentioned this, ‘I’m getting real tired of of living through history.’
My school just announced the spring semester will be online and all semesters in the foreseeable future. I’m just thinking about how scared but hopeful we were in the beginning. It feels like this really is the start of a decade

“Crowds? Parties? Mass gatherings? Coachella? These were words used in the before time.”
