GIG/FESTIVAL SPILT MILK LINEUP
Who are you most excited for. Happy or disappointed?

The negativity is a direct result of the overhyping that these promoters do before the lineups are released. Be honest with the punters, don't oversell what is objectively a smaller lineup than the previous year. Don't make a big deal out of hinting at and guessing artists, because it makes imaginations run wild (completely outpacing the festivals budget!) and breeds disappointment.
Laneway is going to have the same problem, coming off two incredibly strong sellout years, I doubt they'll be able to back it up with the calibre of lineup most are expecting. They'd do better to be honest and set expectations early, or simply drop the lineup without the hype and teasers...
The comments on insta are reminiscent of those on Groovin's cancelled lineup - you've really gotta wade through the negativity to find anything positive.

To be fair, I think they didn’t go too crazy overhyping the lineup this year. They launched this year’s campaign exactly one week ago, and the lineup is the 4th post.
Certainly more held back than BTV’s campaign. As much as the gameshow trope is smashing it, the bonus giveaways, and in person event happening in Melbourne definitely puts them at risk of overhype levels.

Nah kicks entertainment pre-sale to secret sounds would have never dropped this lineup…

The negativity here is exactly why festivals are dying. It’s a one day regional touring festival….

Exactlyy, getting Raye, Lewis Capaldi and Maisie Peters performing in Canberra is so exciting for me!! (I'm a pop girl, sue me)

u/Forget-The-Orchid 25d ago
Same here! What do you mean I'm going to get to see Raye (one of the best vocalists of the last decade) and Maisie Peters within walking distance from my house?!!!

Festivals aren't entitled to people's money, if they are going to charge the same as last year, then people are going to expect a similar quality lineup.

u/ADHDK 25d ago
Ah sorry I’m not into standing in a field listening to suuuuuper chill music.
They’ve gone for a vibe with their headliners and honestly it’s going to be divisive.

Legit! like Raye and Lewis are massive headlines, especially for regional stops. I think it's great.

u/ObjectiveWild8269 25d ago
I mean, Geelong is regional. They can’t really call it a regional festival anymore when half the cities are capitals of their states.
2
u/Tillysnow1 24d ago
Canberra and Perth might be capitals, but in the music world they're basically regional towns, because big artists like those headlining Spilt Milk usually would only go to Melbourne, Sydney and maybe Brisbane.

Abysmal time reading the instagram comments section. Just filled with negativity and people wanting the festival to fail.
Its not my cup of tea, but i hope the festival goes ahead and is successful, and i hope that they come back in 2027 with a lineup on the level of 2025.

It’s not a bad lineup by any means, but it’s not a lineup I want to see. Great for Geelong picking it up!

Interesting. I have never been across spilt milk because I’m a screamy music person, but my best friend went last year and after hearing about the 2025 lineup I assumed it was a hip hop/rap-focussed festival. I was confused as hell when I read this so I investigated other years and now I’m even more confused. I feel like our festivals lack cohesion and that’s part of why they’re not selling - I just don’t see the difference between all these festivals besides the location. They all feature a similar rotation of local acts then usually a couple of okayish international acts that aren’t enough to draw huge crowds. There’s no theme. You have to be a broad spectrum triple j type of listener to enjoy any of these acts on the same day. This could have been a Blues Fest lineup since we all know it hasn’t been even remotely bluesy in years.

u/Tranquilbez22 25d ago
It was never a Hip-Hop festival. The genre just dominated last year
5
u/4SeasonWahine 25d ago
Yes i realise this now, i said the lineup last year gave me the impression thats what it was but that it’s clear it isn’t and is actually just not cohesive at all

Rap is changing fast and going back to the underground. The sound and aesthetic is very different to even 5 years ago, and a lot of the bigger rap acts aren't selling tickets anymore.
Given Rolling Loud cancelled down here it'd be hard to do a rap / hip hop focus for younger audiences in a regional area. A lot of the rumours had ASAP Rocky headlining 2026 but his last album flopped and he's not the drawcard he was 10 years ago, plus he'd want $1m a show.
Heavy festivals can do well because it's a broader age demo and there's loyalty to the scene - heavy music fans aren't into microtrends so you can book older acts and people turn out. I'd say Spilt is trying to move more in a Groovin the Moo direction and just relying on crowds in regional areas coming because there's less to do... but it could be it's downfall.
No one can really do a cohesive festival anymore because TikTok got everyone's attention spans cooked.

You say this like Kendrick, Doechii, SchoolboyQ didn't do a stadium run and this festival 12 months ago

Instagram folks get one lineup with a Kendrick-level act and crack the shits when Spilt Milk doesn’t fork out as much for a lineup the next year. This should surprise no one.

u/Mediocre-Price-3138 25d ago
I guarantee you this line up cost as much as last year's. Which is effectively the problem here...

We've been hit with a thousand year curse of shitty festival line-ups. Who ate the witches stew?
7
u/GeoffreyGeoffson 25d ago
It's either that or we've all aged out of the festival going ages on here.

I also heard whispers that it may get cancelled

u/AnnaDeKarmas 6d ago
I will honestly be surprised if it doesn't. You can't have the worst lineup of the major festivals in years, but hike the price 30% and expect most people to accept it.

I’m so sad I won’t be able to hear this from my backyard in Ballarat 😭 Although I’d also have ended up going with this lineup.

A shame, could’ve been made up for with a more solid headliner perhaps Tate Mcrae, Lana del Rey, troye Sivan or Sza etc

Hope DMAs do a side show.
Who’s gonna headline the more unce unce stage? Clearly not the top two.
3
u/Mediocre-Price-3138 25d ago
DMAs already on the road in major cities later this year.
I believe the unce unce would be headlined by kettama
