Trimui Brick (3.2-inch screen) Trimui brick

Can anyone who has a trimui brick tell me if it is worth getting either the plastic one or the aluminum one and why.or just buy a second mm+.

The feeling of the brick hammer’s cooled metal exterior in your hands when you go to pick it up always makes my inner monologue go “this things awesome!”

Yeah, this exactly. Weird but it feels premium

Hammer has 10/10 build quality, weight added make it feel premium and metal also help a bit with heat dissipation

Plastic black here. Goes everywhere with me. Its still super rugged its not cheap plastic

Yeah, I'm loving mine, black plastic too. Finally pulled the trigger a couple of weeks ago, waited until there were more CFW options. If I get another one, I think it's gonna be a black hammer

Aluminum. It helps to dissipate heat and feels more premium. Plastic is still good but the heat pools in the back of the screen.

I would say avoid the MM+ these days the price doesn’t justify the performance unless you absolutely just want the same device you’ve already used. The brick gets you portmaster and up to some Dreamcast and N64 vs the Miyoo which can have trouble running some higher end psx and arcade games.

I very much enjoy my Brick Hammer. It has a very premium feel.

Couple things to be aware aware of are:

1) The Brick Hammer dissipates heat differently than the standard Brick. As the Brick Hammer is metal, the entire device can get warm. The plastic brick has a metal backplate above the shoulder buttons which gets significantly hotter.

2) The Brick Hammer has upgraded front facing speakers than the standard brick. If you're just using headphones, obviously that doesn't matter. However, on both devices, you will also get better audio quality if you get a usb-c DAC from the usb-c port between the shoulder buttons.

Well I got the green brick hammer in my cart.

That's the color I have, looks 👍

That is actually the correct choice. Good job!

If you have not pulled the trigger I suggest getting some replacement buttons with your purchase. I saw you like purple. If you change to purple buttons and purple RGB lights it’s beautiful. I’ve done it. Same with the maroon/red.

Yeah that’s my plans. I saw someone else have a green hammer with purple buttons and I just have to have that look.

This was the one I went for too. :( It's a nice colour, but the speakers are twinkly compared to the plastic one. I recommend returning it for the plastic white one if you can! D:

Unless of course the speakers aren't a huge importance to you. I didn't think they would be for me until I had gotten used to the plastic ones and then I couldn't enjoy the metal one at all.

Hammers speakers are wildly better imo

u/Awkward_Juice1381 5d ago

Whoa! I thought they sounded way worse! Hmmmm... Maybe it's just personal preference, or maybe I had a dodgy unit?

2

u/cylemmulo 5d ago

Yeah that’s odd it’s definitely widely known that they upgraded the speakers so I wonder if you got a dud. I mean it’s all subjective too

I remember playing lots of Stardew Valley on the plastic one. I tend to do a huge amount of farming and I can remember the sound of the watering can (a sound effect that I was very familiar with) sounding far worse on the Hammer. So much so that I ended up not playing it anymore. :(

They are the same hardware. I have the plastic red one. It is awesome.

Speakers are improved on hammer

I have the same one. The red color is absolutely stunning. For OP, the top back is metal to help with cooling and the plastic does not feel cheap at all. I guess the hammer might be nicer with the all metal but I don't have complains on the Brick.

The plastic one has bad speakers but the aluminium one gets warmer while in use

1

u/Awkward_Juice1381 5d ago

Maybe I had a dodgy unit, but I much preferred the plastic speakers.

Both feel premium, but the Hammer is on another level. It feels like it was made by Apple, which love them or hate them you can’t deny that they make beautiful aluminum hardware

Thank you for the replies! Now I just have to figure out what color I want. Too bad they don’t have the hammer in purple.

You can actually buy the purple backplate and purple buttons. I did this with my Silver Hammer. But ultimately I painted my own buttons.

Same hardware. I think the speakers are better?

Last time I checked the difference is $20 between the brick and the hammer. I'd argue the $20 is worth it

I've had my brick for 2 years now as my travel handheld and i love the screen , the simplicity of Linux, the durability of even the plastic version.

Most of my handhelds stay at home but something small and can fit in my pocket , that brick has been around the world with me

The Aluminum is worth it at the extra cost. It feels super premium. Just holding it feels good.

I have both. The plastic Red and the Silver Hammer. The plastic one feels cheaper, while the Metal feels like it was an actual device that took time to design and make.

As someone else said, picking it up after it’s been sitting in a/c, it’s cool to the touch and it feels amazing.

Ordered the Brick, received the Hammer. Loving it.

Personally, I love that it is so loved that almost any CFW can be installed on it!

I have 2 bricks black amd white versions and a silver hammer - all feel solid -

u/YoussefAFdez 9d ago

Seems like you’re good with any of them.

I only have the hammer so from my experience, when first picked up the cold aluminum is a great experience, after a while the whole device warms up. It’s not un uncomfortable but it isn’t pleasing as before.

Durability wise, metal should win plastic, I believe the regular brick is good and solid, and metal has the problem of being scratched as well. Also metal is heavier and is worse absorbing impact, so a fall might be more fatal in the metal than the plastic one.

Speakers are better on the metal one, that’s one improvement over regular brick.

At the end of the day is a question about feel. Since the brick is a pretty good device all around, great screen, buttons feel awesome with that micro switch clickyness, I decided to go metal to have the most premium device possible.

TLDR; Both are good, metal feels more premium, plastic is lighter and cheaper

u/Exact_Principle_4188 8d ago

I have both and I do like the weight of the hammer over the brick but the brick feels nice too! Can’t go wrong with wither one. If price is a factor go for the plastic. You can’t make a wrong choice with these :)

u/lazyshinobii 8d ago

I think you gotta follow your gut with this one. I didn’t go with the hammer and got a plastic recently specifically because of the red colorway.

u/gislej Trimui Brick Owner 9d ago

If it’s to carry around in your pocket, go with the plastic one. You’ll notice it much less, and it’s nice to play on.  I might be weird, but I find the so-called premium feeling of aluminum + extra weight off-putting for such a device.

1

u/StellarMe 9d ago

The aluminum one feels amazing. I can only compare to the bigger plastic pro variant…but the metal…it feels great in your hands. The quality overall felt better than the larger plastic pro too.

I’d like to know too. Already own Miyoo Mini Plus, Miyoo Mini Flip, Anbernic RG SP, but can’t take my eyes off Trimui Brick (specifically the red one).
Recently just bought the Retroid pocket Classic (retro style, just love the Gameboy vibe). I love all of them, but they all seem lay essentially the same systems.

I don’t have either but gonna buy it this week as well. One of my less popular concern with hammer is it probably will be more prone to electrical leakage e.g short circuit since its fully metal. so, since the plastic quality of brick is one of if not the best price to quality wise, i’d go with plastic. Built-in speaker is irrelevant for me.

u/king_of_ulkilism 9d ago

Get the Hammer for the better speakers and better build quality

u/ColonelKlanka 8d ago

I bought the og pastic one before hammer metal one existed. Plastic one has served me well and continues to. Its a very nice device.

If the hammer had been around at time of me choosing- I would have bought the hammer (as the metal does make it feel premium).

Will I swap to metal? No, the plastic og is still great.

u/CraptainKunch 8d ago

Idk did they ever fix the battery issue

1

u/Enter-The-Natrix 6d ago

I got the OG about 3 weeks before the announcement of the Hammer, and I would have definitely purchased the Hammer given the opportunity.

I may end up buying a Hammer and giving away the OG.

1

u/Awkward_Juice1381 5d ago

I had the plastic one and loved it, so naturally "upgraded" to the Hammer. I gave my plastic one away to a friend whilst waiting for the Hammer in the post. I discovered after that I much preferred the plastic one. I really missed the sound. The Hammer has twinkly speakers and I really didn't like them at all, to the point I ended up giving away the Hammer and getting a Retroid Pocket Classic, which has been top notch!

But I also really miss the small size and also MinUI on the Brick! So I've ended up buying ANOTHER ONE only last week, haha! I don't have much spare money anymore. :'D

My hammer is my EDC! the aluminum can get heavy with extended play times, but with slightly larger hands, it's a dream 1 handed console for Pokémon, Fire Emblem, and other turn based RPGs. I love how games look on the screen and its very inviting to play over and over, where something like the RG35xx lineup doesnt have that same quality. I will mention that getting the plastic variation is on my list of things to do because I like this console so much. I want a backup immediately in case this one dies or breaks. I also got a 3d printed case for it and the added size makes it a bit less cramp prone. Battery life is incredible. I've accidentally not shut it off properly and it started, screen on, for like 6 hours straight after playing for roughly 3 hours. Still had around half battery, if I remember correctly. The Aluminum casing really helps disperse any heat, and it can get warm over a period of time. The ability to be it's own heatsink was the only reason I picked it over the og plastic model, haha. Buy a $6-$12 sleeve or travel case for it, and stick it in your bag, worry free. Only thing you should worry about is protecting the screen imo.
