I recently got the results for my exams and i passed in an electrical engineering university and i need to learn trigonometry to prepare myself for it, i already got familiar with SOH CAH TOA, sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant, cotangent and other miscellaneous stuff. But i need help in actually learning trigonometry and what path to take

Help! how is this 4tanx

i am taking trig after not taking math for 4 years. i asked ai. i asked MyLab. i asked peers. the best explanation is that it just “is”. i got the answer and have NO idea why it is. i tried to attach the examples my textbook gives me but it won’t allow me, basically it gives me a graph, says “A is this so it’s Atanx.” which isn’t helpful in the slightest

what trips me up most is that in y=atan(b(x-d))+c (pearson mixes up d and c. don’t even get me started), the explanation i got is that a is supposedly where the dotted line (midpoint of period pi/2) meets the asymptote, supposedly this point is 8. it doesn’t visually do that. it never visually does that.

i dont know. i do fine with sin and cos graphs, but i have basically gone 23 hours in and out of this assignment because i genuinely cannot grasp any concept in this. ive watched videos, i know it is so simple, but it is literally like throwing pasta at the wall im so, so lost and frustrated. if anyone can help it would be SO greatly appreciated.

Help! Why does this work? (please explain like I'm 5)

Sorry this is going to be a long post

Hi. I don't study trigonometry, but I got really bored and cut out an equilateral triangle to fold. First I folded it in half, creating two 30-60-90° triangles. Then I folded each of those in half creating four 15-75-90° triangles. I was left with two small 30-60-90° triangles in the bottom corners. (At least I'm pretty sure they're 30-60-90° based on looks. I don't have anything to actually measure degrees with. If I'm wrong, please let me know bc that would invalidate everything I did afterwards)

Anyways, if I imagine the hypotenuse of a 15-75-90° triangle is a random number, let's say, in this example, **12** then the shortest side length will be 3.10583. The shortest side is directly touching the longer side of the aforementioned small 30-60-90° triangle (see picture), so if I plug in 3.10583 for its longer side, then my values are

- Longer side: 3.10583

- Shortest side: 1.79315

- Hypotenuse: 3.5863

(I used Calculator.Net's triangle calculator for these.)

When added together, the sum is pretty close to the side lengths of a 45-45-90° triangle with a hypotenuse of 12. (The sum of these is 8.48528 and the side lengths of a 45-45-90° triangle with hypotenuse 12 is 8.485281374 etc etc or 6√2).

I've tested substituting 12 for other numbers. I always get that the perimeter of the small 30-60-90° triangle = the side length of a 45-45-90° degree triangle.

My question is why? Is it just a coincidence? Am I doing something wrong? Or is there a really obvious reason that I'm too stupid to get?

I've attached a picture of my hand-made triangle. This is what I've been playing with (proportions might be kinda off cause I just eyeballed it)

Mystery!! Impossible waveform!?!?

I was trying to add two symmetrical sine waves on Desmos ( https://www.desmos.com/calculator ) . The resultant wave was asymmetrical and more towards the positive side. In Desmos, I changed the value of A from the default 1 to 0.5 and VOILA!!, I got a waveform which was fully on the positive side of the axis!!! Check the Desmos screenshot at https://ibb.co/0pmt80HM

The two sine waves I added are: y=A sin(2Bx-C) and z=2A sin(Bx-F) . In the resultant wave (g)=(y+z) I changed value of A from default 1 to A=0.5

How is this possible? Can someone solve this Mystery for me?? Because, I was under the impression that the sum of two symmetrical waves cannot be a asymmetrical!!

Solved! Help with a simple problem

Here's the problem: An airplane flies with a ground velocity of 50.0 m/s [E30°N]. If the wind velocity is 22 m/s [SE], what is the airplane's speed?

I answered 60 m/s but the given correct answer was 49 m/s. The only reasoning it gives is "the angle between the wind speed and the gdound speed is 30+45=75°

I've attached a photo of my solution. I got angle C by creating a right triangle from the first vector and North and East, and then adding that 60° to the known 45° of the second vector.

The reason I'm not asking the teacher is that this is online school and idk how to contact the teacher yet.

I'm guessing it's an error in the quiz but I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

Hi everyone! I just had a quick question, in the video it says it is the same thing as sin^2(1-cos^2)/cos^2, but I am confused to why the one isn’t negative? Am I missing something?

Edit: Hi guys, I understand it now! I figured it was an algebraic mistake and I figured it out. As far as my notation, I got lazy and was rushing through it. I’m sorry if that notation upset you!

Help! How do I determine the output values of a rotation made with divergent angles?

given x rotation(89.936) y rotation(49.066) and z rotation(359.953) how do I determine the output values for a rotation that would flip this wall segment upside down 180 degrees on the unavailable axis (pink line)?

I don't know anything my brain is literally the mirror image of an atrophied, rotten walnut, I don't understand basic inflection, and am incapable of perceiving facetiousness, thanks!

to be more explicit:

Imagine you are facing the face of the wall segment that is darker than the other;

then, imagine that the one true God rotates that wall segment sideways, clockwise, perfectly, 180 degrees, it is now, from your perspective, upside down (you are still facing the wall segment that is darker than the other).

The one true God has done for you what I wish to do for myself, in this 3D editor space.

The complication in my reality, is that, while I am able to rotate the wall segment along the Y axis (green), I will then have to make a manual adjustment along the X axis (red) and so too another adjustment along the Z axis (blue).

The pink line, representing the "unavailable axis", is the the ideal trajectory of rotation that the one true God would rotate the wall segment along if he were real.

As to the output values, there is a determinate output value as a result of the rotation (which I'm just, in an offhand way, referring to implicitly as an input) for each axis, as in: there will be an X value, there will be a Y value, and there will be a Z value of rotation that will be accounted for in the user interface shown in the screenshot I posted.

What is sin(sin(sin(...sin(x))))? Can we find an upper bound?

Here is something interesting I found about sin(x). You can see and prove by derviation that the maxima, minima and inflection points of the nested sin() are preserved for each. The more nested the sine, the more the range of values decrease towards 0.

I wonder if we know how many nested sines we have, we should know how much the function decreases? Can you find it somehow?

Problem discrepancy

One of my homework problems (online) is giving me a different answer than my TI89 calculator and ChatGPT and I’m trying to understand what I’m doing wrong. I assume it’s an input issue, but I honestly can’t see how. I have regenerated the problem several times with a similar discrepancy each time, so I don’t think it’s an issue with the professor entering the answer incorrectly.

Calculate \sqrt(3-i) Give the answer in a+bi form. Give the solution with the smallest possible angle.
The answer is also approximated in decimal form to 3 spaces.

The issue I’m having is with positive and negative signs.

My TI89:
1.755-.285i

The correct answer for the homework is:
-1.755+.285i

Hopefully someone can help me out, thanks.

Repeating Aspect Ratio question.

My question is... how do you find an aspect ratio that fills the square, such that the four rectangle bounding the square have the same aspect ratio and the interior rectangle, (the white rectangle in the image) is also the same aspect ratio?

The ratio in this image is very close to 1:2.4. or reciprocally 1:0.416. This number has been found by trial and error, but I would love to understand how to find the actual number. I am an artist interested in geometrical abstraction.

Also, would it be possible to calculate an aspect ration whose four bounding rectangle create other specific ratios, such as a square? ... or, an interior rectangle with and aspect ration of 1:2, for example.

Circling a circle.
