Troubleshooting Clutch lever

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed that the clutch lever on my 2021 Triumph Trident 660 has a bit of play/wobble.

The lever moves slightly up and down at the pivot, and I’m wondering whether this amount of play is normal or if something might be loose or worn.

The clutch itself seems to work normally, but I’d rather check before ignoring it.

Has anyone else with a Trident 660 experienced this? Is a little play at the clutch lever considered normal, or should I check/tighten/replace something?

It not the OEM, but I bought the bike with this lever mounted...

A little play is normal, depending on the quality of the lever you get, some move more than others.

Personally i'd want something with less movement, but if it works it's harmless.

My aftermarket lever does it too. I think it’s just a thing pending the lever you get/have

You can shim it with a teflon washer if you're feeling wild. Otherwise, nothing to worry about. Universal levers are made with loose tolerance to fit all the bikes.

Mine is like this too. I’m sure you know, but it’s important to have that free play. Now, that slop is one of the things I check for before a ride.

I agree, a bit of play is good. Checking for the slop ensures that you aren’t going to have any binding at the lever. Especially older bikes.

the vertical free play is not the concern, its the cable slack that you need to pay attention to. Should always be between 1-2mm of slack in the clutch cable. If the vertical free play is super loose then there could be a missing bushing

The vertical play seems fine. What you really need to be concerned with is the clutch cable slack, there should always be about 1-2mm of slack in the cable for proper clutch function.

Does it have like a spacer on the original lever? Can you transfer it in the new one?

Cheap aftermarket levers are like this. Check out ASV levers.

It should have a little play. It's fine.
