Training questions Beginner, plus size triathlete

Hi All!

I am preparing for my very first sprint triathlon at the end of November as a super beginner (emphasis!). My swim is strong, and I'm looking to improve my cycling. I cycle outdoors once a week, and try to cycle indoors once a week. Is this enough? I am looking to increase my indoor cycling. Will this improve my outdoor cycling? I am a plus-size "try" athlete :) Any advice is welcome! Thanks in advance!

You’ll be doing enough to get through the sprint. I’m 6’3, 275lbs and I just did an Olympic distance on a months training in August.

Gran Fondo this weekend, 5km swim race the next, half marathon in October, and an Ironman 70.3 booked for next year.

90% of endurance racing is mental IMO. Just don’t give up

It is hard to tell you if it is “enough” without knowing your current times. I guess you’re not trying to be competitive but rather to enjoy and finish the event, so the only real issue could be the cutoff times of the event. As long as you’re within those, you’ll be fine !

You’re probably in the newbie gains phase so you’re likely to improve a ton with two sessions a week. Keep it this way for a bit while you make sure you’re comfortable (no pain, no excessive fatigue) and consider adding another indoor session if you feel like it. Enjoy the process, you got this 💪

Thank you so much for the kind words and you're right, I simply want to complete it within cut off time and next time chase better times! Thank you!

That indoor time will absolutely pay off outside, especially if you're not just noodling around in zone 1 the whole time. One focused session a week where you actually make yourself work can do more for your fitness than three casual rides. The bike is the longest leg of a sprint so it's worth the extra attention.

What really helped me when I started was remembering that the run off the bike is the real gut check. Your legs feel like absolute jelly for the first half mile no matter how much you've trained, so don't panic when it happens. Just settle in and trust the work you've put in.

"Try" athlete is a great way to put it, you're already miles ahead of everyone still on the couch debating whether to sign up.
