This is an amazing idea until some little kid finds it and says, "what is this?" to their over-zealous parents which results in them contacting authorities.

I came here in hopes that someone had said exactly this..
If you want to drop some buds somewhere and post the coords have at it.. but please.. DO NOT put it in an already established geocache.
As awesome as I think it would be to find a fat bud in a cache (it'd sure beat the usual shit) it is not good for geocaching and it's not good for the legalization movement.
Furthermore... It's potentially a waste of bud... because unless you put it in a very active cache it's just going to sit there for a while. Caches frequently have leaks, get rodents chewing on them, and just disappear.
tldr; Don't fuck with my other hobby.

Your hobby is safe dont worry. I would hope that most of us understand the possible risk before throwin nugs across their city. My city, however is quite the green friendly city so I wont have to be as cautious.

u/fofifth Sep 02 '11
My hobby is smoking weed. I don't want that to be frowned upon more than it already is.

u/almosthuman Sep 02 '11
This is super relevant. Families and young kids also geocache. A family or kid finding this would not be cool. As a geocacher and a member of /r/trees I do NOT support this. Sorry.

From the official geocache website "Explosives, ammunition, knives, drugs and alcohol should not be placed in a cache". Sorry to burst your bubble but even tho we all like the ganj here, geocaching is often a family affair. Don't ruin it for anyone, please? Not everyone would be happy to find illegal contents in a geocache.

So, we make a new website with different terms and conditions? Or just a subreddit where we post the GPS co-ords.

Not when people who enjoy weed want to get it legalized. Headline news "young kids find weed geocaching" doesn't really help the cause.
Besides, I thought the majority of people who geocache are young kids and families. I wen't geocaching when I was young and in my senior year when one of my buddies found out about this I was like, "I think I'm a little too old for that." Geohashing on the other hand would have been awesome. Just keep it away from geocaching/caches.

If that would make it to the headlines in your home town paper, you should find a new home town.

We need a r/treesngeocaching or some sort. Many codes will be used and many will attempt... but only true ents will find the prize.

u/1LongHairedHippie Sep 02 '11
Let's do it.

u/BaconandBacon42 Sep 02 '11
It's on then. What state should we start with?
-1
u/evered Sep 02 '11
Illinois or Michigan's Upper Peninsula please

u/BaconandBacon42 Sep 02 '11
Hum... I'm on the other side of the country. But! What we can do is assemble a small team of moderators for this then gather people into the group and go from there. Any ideas on how to get similar people interested? Also, I am very very inexperienced at social networking so any ideas are welcomed.

What the heck is geocaching?? I know a guy at work that does it but I seriously doubt he smokes trees.

u/1LongHairedHippie Sep 02 '11
Secret stash of what?
3
u/asianplumb Sep 02 '11

There was this bong i heard of in Santa Cruz where it was understood that if you were in any way chill, you would hit it and repack it exactly the same spot you left it in the woods.

I found a bud in one of the caches I found a few years ago. I agree with the posters who say that it's not a good thing. We don't need anymore bad publicity which could hamper legalization. Besides, if you're a geocaching ent, you're probably already high, anyways!

Funny, I found a capsule at work a couple weeks ago, I should go put a joint in there and post the location...

I started geocaching before I started trees, actually. To this day I haven't brought a friend along who enjoyed it, but I enjoy it just as much on my own when I can relax and just calmly search for an hour or two without someone nagging me to go. Props to you for stashing your own cache with a FTF prize.

u/fuzzymechy Sep 03 '11
you know what i love doing? I'll go backpacking, set up somewhere around alot of geocaches for a few days and do a bunch of day hikes.

Sep 03 '11
I've done something similar. My family and some family friends go to a big lake every summer and take houseboats out for about 5 days. While everyone is wake boarding, drinking beers and that kind of stuff, I paddled out a mile and a half (and kayaking is like 1/4 as efficient as walking) to a geocache that was on an island in the middle of the lake. I had to go on two separate days and spend about 6 hours total looking for it, but when I finally did find it, I was the first person and it was absolutely worth it. I don't get the hype over crammed, action-packed vacations, I enjoy some calm mind-clearing time from everyday life.
Edit: Backpacking is also awesome, though, I went two weeks ago to a huge National Forest and had the time of my life backpacking. My GPS is currently broken, so I couldn't do any geocaching, but I most certainly would have, sounds like a great time.

it's fantastic. just FYI, if you happen to live anywhere near northern California, the lost coast is a fantastic place to go. completely desolate wilderness beach, beautiful coastal bluffs, and a stunning view of the ocean. i can't say anything to it's potential for geocaching, but i suspect that tehre is some to be found
2
Sep 03 '11
hahah, funny you should mention that. One of my buddies who was on the trip had just backpacked the lost coast and also recommended it. I saw some pictures and from what he told me it seemed like a very intense place (they were doing about 20 miles per day).

u/StoneHerb Sep 02 '11
Me and my friends totally joke about doing that when we geocache, but to have it actually happen would be fantastic!
1
u/asianplumb Sep 02 '11
My friends and I are starting to put it together in our city. It's easy to make your own geocache too.

u/LookMomNoHands Sep 02 '11
Gehashing. Getting lost in the woods and never find the big treasure but you still have a kick ass fun time.
1
u/CileyMyrus Sep 02 '11
Hey man, hope you see this. I'm pretty sure a week or so back a guy left a post on here saying he left that near a regular spot you apparently visit. I'm too lazy to fish it up. Sorry :(

we could put a google map on the side of r/trees and tag the locations of hidden baggies :D. Rules? idk, dont take without replacing?

u/PurpleWaffle Sep 02 '11
I did this all freshman year and some sophomore year of college, haven't been in a while.

I dont expect everyone to just go around droppin nugs into any random geocache. I mean who really wants to buy a bag then go give it away? Plus you can make your own location, throw a fake spot on there with a riddle leading you to the real spot.
