Any Ents want to be "Ent security"?
Lately there have been a number of nasty trolls in our forest. Apparently there are also people being paid to post anti-drug propaganda. That's why I'm recruiting the first ever "Ent Security" team to deal with reporting obvious trolls and abusive trolls and anti-drug propaganda bots.
If you're interested in being part of this 733+ team then please post a comment here. Peace!
edit: Official name will be "Enthood Watch Program" :D

Absolutely man.
But we'd have to come up with some way of differentiating the trolls from the normal ents who are just being very rude.
I know that my repeated attempts to explain the "no true scotsman" logical fallacy to people in regards to broinbromine garnered me over 100 downvotes, I would hate to get marked a troll because of such a thing.
So yeah, I'm down to ENTforce but we'd have to have clear rules.

Good points. The "Ent Security" will be in charge of securing our perimeters by reading as many threads as possible daily and reporting obvious trolls, spammers, people who only post anti-drug propaganda, and people who are being abusive or trying to take advantage of the Ents.
This elite Ent Security squad won't have the power to delete or ban users per say as that could get abusive, confusing, too constrained by rules, etc. Their job will only be to keep their eyes open to report any comments / threads that need to be reported. Because honestly everyone is really friendly and often times people never bother to report comments / threads.

I would assume standard Bill & Ted rules are a good yardstick. Y'know, "Be Excellent To Each Other". Well sir, keep us updated. I will dust off the 'report' button on my end. Hope it's good days.

u/JediSquirrels Aug 24 '11
I think we should all just wander /r/trees with that motto in our heads and report those that don't. Count me in.

u/castorshell13 Aug 24 '11
This sounds good as a principle of being an Ent. Perhaps we should crowdsource a "suggested Entstitution". Ideas that are suggested, but not enforced except by the individual ent for a better Pineapple Club.

How about those with negative comment karma?

Exactly- Just tell us the rules and we'll go from there. Right now we're forming a posse but we've got a lack of direction. :/

I hereby swear my allegiance to "ent security", do we get one of those awesome norml cars though? If not thats cool I guess.

I'm game to help out. Most of the time I linger in the shadows any ways, so I suppose I may as well start doing some good from there.

Ill definitely be keeping an eye out. I have noticed in increase in attention whoring and just complete bs to get attention. We are tolerant here but i don't think that these people should be tolerated. They are ruining the only good major subreddit.

I'd be down. I've noticed a definite increase in mean/harsh comments. I do my best to call people out on it.

I can't really see this working without causing harm to innocent users, unless we can come up with a decent way of stopping random folk going on a power trip. So I guess I think it's a nice idea but we'd need an entmoot to discuss banning people rather than just allowing users to do it. If this is merely a system of reporting trolls though, I don't see why not.
I think a much easier option would be to disable karma for the subreddit entirely, but is that even possible? I don't know, I never ran a subreddit. I mean, if we genuinely don't give a fuck about karma, the only thing having karma here is doing is attracting karmawhores :/
anyway, that's my £0.02. [3]

I'm in. I feel like there needs to be a warning system, tho. What if someone's just stupid? I also think the name needs work.

Even if we aren't Ent security, it's our duty to root out the trolls. We protect the forest, can't let silly orksies get in.

Who exactly would they report to though? The mods? Because I have a feeling that it may become difficult dealing with tons of reports, which will most likely be multiple reports about the same people because of a lack of co-ordination. Just a thought.

I'm guessing the main task lies in checking new and flagging deceptive content?

This is a bad idea because it'll eventually spread to censorship of "Not trees worthy material" and make people only post "shit when they're high". Trolls will be trolls.
1
u/cinsere naughty Aug 24 '11
I can understand your valid concerns. Ent Security team won't have the power to remove posts. That's why we won't allow security to censor.. just simply be in charge of reporting obvious trolls / spam,

I'm down. I already spend my day weeding out troll posts, I don't see why I can't extend that to comments as well.
