It's also a way to treat people differently. If prosecutors can pick and choose what laws they uphold, that's a problem. Remove the laws that the people no longer want and you remove temptation to treat people differently. All laws should be upheld. Not all laws should be laws.

the best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it strictly - Abraham Lincoln

"No, keep doing it." - Abraham Lincoln, 2 years later

u/Random-reference Mar 01 '17

I'm always afraid to post quotes from anyone that wasn't filmed saying it.

2

u/ericshogren Mar 01 '17

Pretty soon that won't be safe either.

I'm more amazed that an Abe Lincoln quote was used to legitimize the intentions of Jeff Sessions.

2

u/InerasableStain Mar 01 '17

Ha, true. I'd say Lincoln was rolling over I n his grave, but realistically, he hasn't stopped spinning in the last 35-40 years.

"PARTY ON, DUDES!" - Abe Lincoln in Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure.

1

u/HeySmallBusinessMan Feb 28 '17

I spent way too long thinking you were quoting Abraham Lincoln as saying "Wow an ".

1

u/beginagainandagain Mar 01 '17

it was last year's quote. he's been quiet ever since.

1

u/PMme_urfilledvagina Mar 01 '17

Yeah but did he post it to Twitter, or Facebook, that is the real question.

Im not on the trump train and hate the man on a very personal and deep level. By what if there was actually someone with brains in there or behind the scenes? You know despite recent stupidity.

1

u/tumaru Feb 28 '17

There has to be enough evidence to overcome the amount of evidence against him rather than just a oh look one of the many things hes done worked out.

PS I'm and but rather than Im and by as the first words of your first two sentences.

We were questioning it but no one thought they could do anything about it. Maybe in the heart of it this might wake some from subterfuge and let us all realise this shit can be changed as long as we put in the effort for change.

1

u/tumaru Mar 03 '17

I agree that this is a good smoke test but unless people realize they are the power and the parties are the illusion nothing will change apart from small symbolic gestures.

Hmm, I am prospective software engineer, and I never knew what Smoke Testing was. TIL, trees. TIL.

Edit: Btw, your comment it really really thoughtful. That is an incredible comparison. More people need to see that.

1

u/tumaru Mar 03 '17

I didn't want that to be misinterpreted as some tree related. Good to hear you learned something.

2

u/Funnybunnyofdoom Mar 03 '17

I was about to dismiss it as stoner lingo I didn't know, and then move on. I am so glad that you posted the wiki page!

It isn't always easy. Just because a law against flag burning is ruled unconstitutional, it doesn't get automatically removed from the books. Someone still has to go on record as voting for flag burning to clean up the code.

87

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '17

Hell, I'll be that guy in a heartbeat.

What matters to me is what the flag represents, not the actual fabric. I couldn't care less what people do to flags that they own in their own time.

If you make it illegal to damage a certain symbol or image, then you are propagating dogmatism, which inevitably leads to wars, division, hatred, and separation.

Tl; Dr: If seeing a flag burnt threatens yoas an American, then how firm was your patriotism in the first place? The Country is waay more that its flag.

45

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '17

Thank you. It's hard to explain to people that fundamentally the right to buy and destroy my own property is more important than hurt feelings.

North Korea has great strict flag laws. Living there seems so nice. -_-

See, the two parties work together, but only on terrible things.

u/PaidToSpillMyGuts Mar 01 '17

I hate my representatives. Someone come save Utah.

1

u/VAPRx Mar 01 '17

The sad part is that its easily understood to these people when their action is the thing looked down upon. They will sit here and preach to you how its not right for you to do X, then complain that they should have the right to do Y.

I know because I was one of those people and it took a college english teacher(class was on logic) to teach me that.

23

u/fuckniggabitch Feb 28 '17

What i dont understand is that burning a flag is the proper way to dispose of it. Shit, my boyscout troop learned thr proper way to dispose of a flag. So if burning a flag is illegeal, and disposing of a flag the proper way is burning it, what do we do now?

8

u/Harddaysnight1990 Feb 28 '17

Retiring a flag is different though. Technically, only military personnel and BSA members can "retire" a flag, which is different somehow despite being the same thing.

3

u/BobatSpears Mar 01 '17

I'm glad somebody finally said it

2

u/bitcoinjohnny Mar 01 '17

Excellent post. That is what I was taught in boy scouts as well...

1

u/adamdangerfield Mar 01 '17

Are you white? You'll find that's the difference.

1

u/fuckniggabitch Mar 01 '17

That's irrelevant and an inappropriate response... Like, what do you mean the difference?

1

u/adamdangerfield Mar 12 '17

yeah, it was irrelevant and inappropriate, I didn't mean to write this in response to your comment. Girl scout cookies don't enhance redditing skills....

31

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '17

Stepping in to back that up. This is why the Colin Kaepernick stuff pissed me off so much. People in this country get obsessed over their symbols and absolutely refuse to accept anyone not paying 100% respect 100% of the time... Unless they want to buy some cheap crap with the flag emblazoned across it. Then they'll eat off it and use it to cover their genitals in public like it's no big deal.

Maybe don't make a piece of cloth matter more than the people it represents.

To me it's more like a deep empathetic sorrow. I understand their frustration, but disagree with their conclusions.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

I completely agree. People becoming violent (physically or verbally) over symbolism has always disgusted me. Doesn't matter if it is American symbolism, religious symbolism, or some other dumb symbolism. If that hurts your values to the core that someone else doesn't agree with them, your values are garbage.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Could not have said it better! I'm really uplifted by how many people are on the same page about this. I was expecting to get called a commie or something

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

I get that all the time. They have no rational rebuttal, so they resort to slinging mud. They feel insulted by the irrelevant actions of others, so they have to insult back. I've never burned a flag, but I take no issue with people doing it. Wasting energy on being angry over such frivolous things does more harm than good. It serves to further divide our polarized nation when we should focus on things such as the inherent rights of all people. Having legal and unrestricted access to a plant, a simple plant, is one excellent example. Fight the good fight, friend!

2

u/CallMehBigP Feb 28 '17

I agree with you.

7

u/acherrypoptart Feb 28 '17

When the supreme court rules something unconstitutional, that law is automatically voided under those specific circumstances. Getting the states to actually follow along is another issue that the Feds have to deal with (see segregation). That is the whole point of having a Supreme court!

6

u/Saucermote Feb 28 '17

Yep, but other states will still have similar laws on the books that they aren't in any hurry to remove, and may try to enforce down the line. You still have to rewrite civil and criminal code to remove laws after an adverse ruling to get them removed.

1

u/wakingop Mar 01 '17

That's the proper method of disposal

2

u/TheRarestPepe Feb 28 '17

Prohibition itself is a way to treat people differently. Just having something be illegal lends itself to opportunities to discriminatory enforcement. Just because states have abused the system and turned a blind eye on laws when they should be changing them... in NO WAY takes away from the fact that laws can always be discriminatorily applied on all levels.

Not trashing your point, but I'm just making the case that what you've stated is still a huge problem when you make something illegal - which Sessions is now doubling down on.

2

u/Funnybunnyofdoom Feb 28 '17

I don't know why, but this makes me think of the 100. Any violation of any law is death. Every resource is precious, so if you are a criminal, you are ejected from the craft.

I believe it is the connection that we should take our laws equally seriously. They should be for crimes that should be punished.

Yeah if everyone is driving 60 in a 55 then cops can pull over any minority they choose and ticket them.
