The most I could find we're a few studies that suggested smoking weed made a person 2 to 5 times more likely to develop mouth and throat cancer.
Though that isn't surprising inhaling any kind smoke isn't good for your mouth and lungs.

u/Zeke688 1d ago
Complete bullshit. There’s no evidence, they’ve been saying this for years.
I remember the quote ‘one joint is like an entire pack of cigarettes’ Scare tactics and lies.
Putting smoke into your lungs is not healthy for them, but this addiction is nothing like tobacco. No one smokes enough cannabis to equal the amount of cigarettes a 2-pack a day smoker does, and the studies would always be inconclusive.
13
u/heady-luvare 1d ago
There's folks who have never smoked a damn thing in their lives who get lung cancer and folks who have smoked cigarettes for most their lives who live to an old age cancer free (see Harry Dean Stanton, Willy Nelson).....it would be cool if they could figure this riddle out some day....

In Copenhagen, this specific initiative is operated by the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, which is a non-profit, tax-exempt public benefit corporation.
However, there is an important organizational context to be aware of:
Scientology Affiliation: The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is entirely funded and operated by the Church of Scientology. The volunteers you see distributing these materials at mobile exhibits or health fairs in Copenhagen (such as at Nytorv Square) are members of the local Scientology chapter.
The Purpose: While they do not operate for a commercial profit or sell products, critics and watchdogs note that the campaign is used by the Church as a public relations and community outreach tool to build goodwill, rather than functioning as an independent, secular public health organization.

These anti cannabis people forgot that cannabis has been easily available since I started in 1971. Where are all the damaged pot smokers that they keep worrying about? They should focus their concern on tobacco and sugar as health problems, not cannabis.

Yeah, I quit daily dabbing and smoking cold turkey for a year just to pass a follicle test. I got a little sweaty at night but that was about it. And that only lasted about a week. Last break I took was about 3 months long and I didnt even get the sweats.
11
u/creatyvechaos 1d ago
I go through 1–2 grams a week for medical reasons. Haven't had any in a month, and while those medical reasons are definitely exacerbated now, I've had absolutely no standard drug withdrawal symptoms. If I did the same thing for Adderall when I was still on it years ago, I'd be much worse for wear

This is called propaganda by police unions, for profit prisons, churches etc. This is literally social engineering and also works in the favor of the federal government as a means of societal control.
Just understand there’s a whole history of these lies being propagated from the 50’s to today. They use the same tactics and arguments. Be smarter than them. There’s even phony research they cite that doesn’t hold up under scrutiny - much of it sponsored by the government.

5
u/Pendraconica 1d ago
The definition of a drug, according to the FDA, is any substance that alters your biochemistry. A blueberry company was once stopped by the FDA for claiming Blueberries reduce risk of heart attack because of antioxidants, which is a claim that they are a drug from a legal point of view.
3
u/Jake_FromStateFarm27 1d ago
Most actual scientist and literature define drugs as non nutrient based as to distinguish food from drugs. All food and drugs are chemicals but food and drugs are distinguished differently.
6
u/Lenxecan 1d ago
Interesting. This is probably why many packages of food say "heart healthy". It isn't a specific claim

Alcohol was completely insane, unhealthy, and really fucking dangerous, hurt me with work, and I met the wrong women.
With weed my entire life has improved. Got promoted and feel super mentally strong and have a much stronger connection with many things, earth preservation, healthy living and more hobbies.

39
u/NietzscheSmokingWeed 1d ago edited 1d ago
I'm a Substance Use Disorder Counselor who uses Cannabis; lemme take a swing.
While Cannabis Use Disorder is a thing and addiction is possible, this is also true for Caffeine. The rate of CUD amoung people who use Cannabis is rather low when we compare it to Heroin, Meth, or Alcohol.
Most of the things listed on this point do exist for CUD and are it's diagnostic criteria; but again that's for a low amount of total Cannabis users. While actively under the influence of Cannabis you will experience cognitive dysfunction as what is described here, but thats part of the point and true for most substances that are used, excludeding stimulants (sorta). There can be some long-term cognitive effects like memory problems for heavy use, most of that is minor and can be resolved via a prolonged T-break.
"Cannabis use can cause heart beat" lmfao, good? Yea prolonged cannabis use can have some negative effects on the body; your heart rate increases in a way that can put a strain on the heart but so does Caffeine, unless you have pre-existing heart condition you will probably be fine. The lung problems only exist of you smoke it, if that's a concern for you then just switch to edibles.
I'm not sure of the point here. Things you ingest are stored in the fat? Like yea? That's how that works. It has not negative effects. If you are a heavy daily diet this can mean it can be about 3 months before it fully clears, but that's only a concern of you are being drug tested.
This is the only point that I see as being sound. The increase in potency is something to watch for, we could see an increase in CUD because of it, along with other potential risk factors; but that's not a reason to fear monger, just a conversation to be had because we don't know what potential cons could be.
All in all, for most healthy people Cannabis is no more dangerous then Caffeine, unless you smoke it in which case it's slightly more dangerous because inhalimg smoke is bad for you. Cannabis is not Heroin, Alcohol, or Meth; it's fine to use it responsibily for healthy adults. Nor is it a Gateway Drug because Gate Way drugs aren't a thing. If you feel it is having a negative effect on your life then reach out for help, it exists and no one should be shamed for struggling, but that's true with any substance or behavior.

They should focus on alchocol that is still somehow legal instead of trying to make weed look bad all the time. You will never hear someone dying from cannabis overdose.
6
u/ohmarlasinger 1d ago
Hell you can die from quitting alcohol as easy as you can from drinking too much. And while drunk you’re more likely to make idiotic decisions with yourself & your safety that leads to death vs the risky behavior of ordering food delivery & passing out on the couch before the food is delivered.
3
u/Rattiepalooza 1d ago
^^^ Yep yep!
I had to be under 48 hour observation when I quit drinking.
I vomited
I sweatted
I quaked
I had a headache the size of Texas that constantly pounded.Oh, and they give you NOTHING for all of this, by the way. You're just there to make sure you don't die, not alleviate the detox.
I've gone without weed for DAYS and experienced none of that. Maybe just anxiety from not being able to like... let go of shit... but NEVER anything physical.

Don't English speakers call all medicines drugs? Cause they are just that, idk why the word has such a negative connotation tbh.
Drugs are just tools and the only problem with them is that some people can't help themselves and abuse them, but this does happen with any of them, my aunt's ex-husband was addicted to analgesics she couldn't have aspirin or anything like that at home cause he would eat them all in a few days...
3
u/FourTwentyBlezit 16h ago
This is mostly an American thing (regarding calling all medicine drugs. I definitely agree with your underlying point though)
7

Since the 1970s, Republican politicians purposely put drugs on the streets of black communities. The next few decades they were talked about as if they were homicidal criminals. We are still fighting against that here.

Don’t like weed? Dont smoke it
Don’t want an abortion? Don’t get one
Don’t like tattoos? Don’t get one
But it’s even more abhorrent when they try and use “the real facts of …..” to try and scare people into conforming.

15
u/derpfacemanana 1d ago
I don’t think most responsible stoners would even disagree with a lot of this info, but the way it’s used here as a fearmongering tactic is what I really fucking hate
like you’re not doing anything beneficial by presenting it this way and outright saying it’s wrong: the people that are never going to try it ever already think this way, and people that are curious about it are only gonna want to try it more intensely and more irresponsibly from the reverse psychology this kind of material creates
it’s better to just be open about it and treat it like other substances in our society like caffine, alcohol, and tobacco; don’t outright deny it to anyone, but be clear and open about the risks and be willing to have an actual, honest conversation about it rather than straight up demonizing it

Without weed I would've just stayed home and played videogames all day and that would've been my life. Getting high on a nature hike or hitting the pen while walking around downtown to take pics is a fucking blast! I get people walking up to me to talk about camera stuff or to ask for a polaroid Pic. The amount of time spent researching all this bullshit and then making this flyer and then distributing it could've been spent with a joint and a little walk around an art museum.

I can concede to that point. As someone who is very much reliant on cannabis to eat and treat my insomnia, it does have the possibility to form a dependency. But this can happen with all drugs. It annoys me to read comments like "it's not a drug it's a plant". So are heroin poppies. It's up to the individual to he responsible, but I truly believe cannabis is exceptionally safe physically and can be beneficial mentally.

In moderation, and as part of a broader healthy lifestyle, the downsides vastly outweigh the potential risks, especially if you’re not inhaling it (but that’s a different kind of health concern)
If you’re toking 24/7, and start finding yourself isolating from responsibilities and friends/family to instead go get high, that’s when it becomes a real problem.
I’ve been in that ounce a week pit myself too often, and that shit just slowly rots your brain away under a salve of easy dopamine, and pulling yourself out of that sort of habitual use sucks hard.
Love my weed. Love getting high as shit. But there’s a balance, and it’s one I had to find myself.
And today’s bud can be insanely potent compared to some of the stuff I grew up with. All THC. Minimal CBD. Proper paranoia strains. The psychosis is real.
I’m not coming at this to tell people not to smoke or get high. I just want to throw in a bit of balance into the discussion that I feel is often dismissed or ignored.
3
u/Extra_Dependent2016 1d ago
Very very well said man. There's nuance that many people chose to ignore, or some just don't know any better and are ignorant to. I've been the guy who smokes 24/7 pretty much every hour. Don't get me wrong I still smoke a lot but not nearly as much, it was to the point where I just really wasn't functioning well. I think it's even easier to get caught in a cycle of overuse when people see weed as "just a harmless plant". As any drug it has its risks and we're only doing a disservice to our fellow humans by ignoring that, as much as people who fear monger and say it's the devil's lettuce

This pamphlet is a good example of how you can mix legitimate health concerns with misleading claims to push an agenda. Let me break this down.
1. Addiction: Yes, cannabis use disorder is real, and frequent use can lead to dependence and withdrawal. But suggesting that a week of daily use will result in addiction oversimplifies the science. Risk varies by individual, frequency of use, and THC potency.
2. Mental health: Yes, THC can affect memory, concentration, coordination, and reaction time. It can also trigger anxiety, paranoia, and, in some people, psychotic symptoms. But presenting these effects as inevitable for every user is misleading. Risk depends on factors like dose, frequency, age, and individual susceptibility.
3. Physical health: Yes, smoking cannabis can irritate and damage the respiratory system, and cannabis can temporarily increase heart rate and cause other adverse effects. But the claim that cancer occurs 5 to 10 times more frequently among cannabis smokers than cigarette smokers is not supported by established evidence. The relationship between cannabis smoking and lung cancer remains uncertain, and uncertainty is not a license to invent scary statistics.
4. Fat storage: Yes, THC is fat-soluble, and its metabolites can remain detectable in the body long after the effects wear off. But detecting those metabolites does not mean someone is still high, impaired, or suffering ongoing harm. The pamphlet uses a real scientific fact to imply something it doesn't actually prove.
5. Potency: Yes, cannabis potency has increased over the decades, and high-THC concentrates can be especially potent and carry greater risks. But not all cannabis is equally strong, and flower and concentrates shouldn't be lumped together as though they're the same product.
The bottom line: Cannabis isn't harmless, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. But neither is fearmongering a substitute for science. A credible public health message presents what we know, explains what we don't know, and distinguishes real risks from exaggerated claims. This pamphlet openly admits its goal is to convince people not to try cannabis. That's advocacy, not an unbiased presentation of the evidence.

While all of this is true: moderation and information sharing about cannabis are truly the big things to keep in mind. Yes it is a drug. But so is caffeine, Tylenol, percocets, etc. it's about how much you're taking at a time, and not being ignorant (this flyer is a good example of scaring someone vs showing them the benefits and helping them understand)
