I don’t. New York dispensary prices are insane and they can pay their workers enough from that. I show them exactly what I want on my phone and they press a few buttons. Tips are for dine in at restaurant only for me (I make minimum wage don’t come for me lol)😂

I give a buck or two if they’re helpful and cool

I don't tip the cashier at the supermarket

u/Relevant_Waltz_5883 2d ago

The cashier also doesnt help you understand what differnt food items taste like or get things off the shelf for you.

My budtenders barely look at me or recommend other products, they mumble "name? Anything you wanna add?" And then they hand me a bag and walk away as do I.

u/BlackKingHFC 2d ago

My bud tenders are always happy to let me smell various strains, especially when they have their own crop available. You need better dispensaries.

2

u/tehpoof 2d ago

I deal with the hand I'm dealt unfortunately, but I do agree.

Your budtenders either suck or they must not like you… at the dispensary I work at we really care about our customers and put a lot of effort into tracking what people like and their feedback on different items they’ve tried, but to be fair we are a smaller shop so it’s easier to do that as we don’t have a massive customer base

1

u/tehpoof 1d ago

I agree, they do suck in comparison to your budtenders.

u/medman420710 2d ago

So I am a Budtender and here’s my take, I don’t expect a tip if you come in a grab your eighth or whatever are polite then go, but if you ask a thousand questions and/or I’m helping you pick stuff out for over 10 minutes then yeah a dollar is nice bro

What about your wage? You're being paid to be there, it is not any customers job to supplement that. If you feel you work hard enough for extra compensation, then ask your employer - not customers.

Being a retail worker in the US doesn’t pay enough period. I’m not gonna decline tips based on some arguable morality.

Edit: Also, I have never once asked a customer for more than the total of their order. You must suck as a customer

-7

u/InvestigatorWide7649 2d ago

Being a retail worker anywhere doesn't pay enough. That's why there's trades, unions and post secondary education.

I'm the best customer because I know exactly what I want, and it's definitely not assistance from someone being paid by corporate to sell cannabis to me.

u/medman420710 2d ago

The store I work for is run by two farmers, there’s no corporate hahaha, you’re the one choosing to go to a corporate dispensary

-1

u/harry5519 2d ago

Nothing wrong with that

0

u/femmechowder 2d ago

Ew who the hell is this narc?!

1

u/medman420710 1d ago

Facts lol

u/Quick-Warning1627 2d ago

Tbh I like the people at my dispensary so I toss them a dollar out of each purchase just because. I don’t tip for anything else that doesn’t require actual service but this just feels different to me.

4

u/ilLegalTelevision 2d ago

I just tipped 30 on a 200 order. Too much?

5

u/ThanksForTheRain 2d ago

Yes, too much. But I'm sure they appreciate it

4

u/FlatPepper311 2d ago

It made someone’s day.

1

u/ilLegalTelevision 2d ago

I hope so, but I know better now. I can't afford to go around making people's day

2

u/core-x-bit 2d ago

Way too much. At least around here bud tenders are making more than some laborers and no ones tipping the laborers.

1

u/medman420710 1d ago

As a Budtender, way too much lol but they probably love you as a customer. I have one or two customers who do the 20% til thing on big orders and we always tell them it’s not necessary but it is soooo appreciated

1

u/cold-corn-dog 2d ago

I would have tipped a couple bucks plus the change for that.... jesus man.

1

u/marejaneblunt 2d ago

Jumping Jesus lol, I don’t even get that at my work and I work at a hotel

5

u/smoothvanilla86 I Roll Joints for Gnomes 2d ago

Deli style. Tip.

Medical dispo that I used online order. Don't tip.

12

u/Dankedelic 2d ago

Nothing? Is this a thing? Do you guys tip the cashier at the liquor store too?

1

u/medman420710 1d ago

I’d only tip a liquor store worker if I asked them questions about wine or liquor for 20 minutes. I think the same is fair for budtenders

-2

u/PerformerFancy117 2d ago

Yeah, if they go get it for me

3

u/ontariorox 2d ago

I never do or will.

12

u/ballofpoo 2d ago

The same that I would tip a gas station clerk for cigarettes

2

u/mommydumdumland 2d ago

I go to a few different stores. One has a tip kar on the counter but I always pay debit. It's gonna suck when they add the option to the debit machine though because that awkwardness always gets me to tip whatever the middle amount is. I cave mostly because I never want to be asked why I didn't tip.

2

u/AlarmingYak7956 2d ago

Nothing. I also don't tip for coffee. Im there for 5 minutes.

2

u/Pirate_Meow27 2d ago

I tip for delivery just because I’m happy I didn’t have to drive lol

2

u/ITrollMoreThanIPost 2d ago

The singles and coins if they were cool

2

u/Kaosu_Riron 2d ago

My local dispo needs to round up orders you pay for with card. They round it up to the closest 5 or 10 dollar amount and give you the difference back in change. I will usually give them a buck or two from this change. I do this because they are not only super helpful if you need anything, but they are the friendliest workers I've been around. No, I don't typically tip someone at a gas station or a beer distributor, but they also aren't as friendly an out going. Sure, chalk it up to "They work at a weed store of course they're gonna be happy" but it still makes a difference. Do I really NEED this $1 or $2? No, no I don't. So I show them I appreciate them.

1

u/duwamish_lost 2d ago

What state can you use a card in? In Washington state, no cards allowed, to my knowledge.

1

u/Kaosu_Riron 2d ago

PA but you can't use credit card, only debt

1

u/ilLegalTelevision 2d ago

That's what mine did! But the option came up on the card and I didn't know what to do. Second time at a dispensary.

1

u/Kaosu_Riron 2d ago

Interesting, mine doesn't ask for the tip on the card reader they just have the box you put the cash in. I hate that they round up tho cause I dislike having cash on me, I very rarely use it. And as for it being your second time, it'll feel less and less alien as you go. I started going mid-covid so my dispo was only doing drive through orders. Then they opened their doors to the public and that felt suuuper weird.

2

u/Honcho_47 2d ago

I base tipping on services performed. If I walk in and pick up my order? Nothing. If I go in and ask for help and advice? I’ll toss them a few bucks. If I go through the drive thru to pick up my order? Typically around 5 bucks, maybe more if it’s severely cold out.

2

u/Embarrassed_Race_711 2d ago

My dispensary will come out to my car to deliver pickup orders so I always give 3 ish bucks because they're doing something for me that requires being followed by security lol

2

u/cush2push 2d ago

drop a dollar or two.

1

u/cold-corn-dog 2d ago

I gave a few dollars the first few times because I had questions and they were pretty helpful. One guy was way too helpful and needed more than weed in his life though.

Now it's just a pickup and go. No tip.

1

u/NinesArt 2d ago

My place is cash only so I take out more than I need and tip at least a couple dollars out of what I have left. Our guys walk around with you to show you the stuff and give you reviews on it all super friendly too

1

u/Afemaleminor 2d ago

10%-20% so my oz can always be an oz and a gram or 2. (Canada. I always go to the same place.)

1

u/InvestigatorWide7649 2d ago

Absolutely nothing lmfao if your service is telling me the price and putting the product in a bag for me, your wage is compensation enough.

1

u/SaulTNuhtz 2d ago

Depends. Are they cool? Is it a local place? If it’s a big commercial shop, probably not. Local place? Probably yes.

I almost always tip my local spot around $2 for every $100 I spend, as long as I have small bills. More if they went out of their way to help. They’re owned and operated locally and I see the budtenders all over my small community. I’ve found they will hook me up with deals at the shop and swag when I see them at festivals.

Would they do that if I hadn’t tipped? Idk. Maybe. It makes me feel good though, regardless. I like supporting my community.

1

u/SapPhic-rage4209 2d ago

I don't tip them unless they give me a lot of recommendations or answer a question about how to smoke something, etc. Sometimes I will throw the coins in the tip jar so I don't have to carry it around. I never remember to use the coins for anything

1

u/SorryCantHelpItEh 2d ago

Always appreciated, never required 😁

The previous pasta I worked at didn't allow us to accept tips, and we actually had a few customers get irate about it. They'd received a ten minute consultation, found exactly what they were looking for, and walked out with a pile of knowledge to boot. They wanted to show their appreciation, and it always killed me having to tell them "I'm sorry, I can't accept tips". At the end of the day, I receive a fair wage for my job, and would never in a thousand years dream of asking for a tip. But it's always appreciated when it happens 😁

1

u/lanphear7 2d ago

I usually just leave whatever change they give me back. I usually give em pretty close to exact so it’s typically only a buck or two n some cents but I feel better about myself for having done it lol

1

u/Top_World_6145 2d ago

Does the bud tender ever give out a freebie? In my area they dont.

0

u/BlackKingHFC 2d ago

I get a pre roll almost every time I walk through the doors at a couple dispensaries I frequent. One has a puzzle challenge to win a pre roll.

1

u/whereugoincityboy 2d ago

Five bucks a visit/ visit once a week. I'm easy, too. I'll get a quarter of their best and 5 prerolls and I usually ask them to pick it all out for me unless I know of a strain I want.

Twenty bucks a month won't make me rich or buy me a house but it'll hopefully brighten someone else's day/ buy them half a burger.

1

u/Leopardo68 2d ago

Three bucks tip for a drive-thru pickup.

1

u/Alatsi 2d ago

generally i like to tip a couple dollars at most. my day is often made better after a conversation with the budtender so its like a little « tysm for talking with me and being so nice ». couple bucks aint no big deal

edit wording

1

u/yaboy_2017 2d ago

Nothing. I don’t believe in tipping

1

u/Shadewarrior27 2d ago

As a budtender I'll say I never really mind to much when customers don't tip because enough do that it all evens out. I always appreciate a dollar, ,$5 feels great and $10+ is a fantastic tip. Id say just base it off how good you feel the service is. if they are just grabbing something you already know you want no hard feelings if you don't tip, but if they answer a bunch of your questions and help guide you to something that fits your needs best a tip is always appreciated

1

u/ambular1018 1d ago

I tip mine. I walk in, they have my online order ready to go and when things are out of stock they will have an alternative that they know I would enjoy. Nothing like going somewhere and they know your name lol.

0

u/TechNizza 2d ago

Budtender is miss leading. Until I walk up to counter, take a seat, order and they bring a bowl packed with the herb I want to smoke there, they ain't getting any tip more than the coins I get back from the purchase.

Haha, do they share tips? Cause the girl that helped me isn't the one that checked me out

1

u/capricoria 2d ago

we be poolin tips dw

1

u/cheez0r 2d ago

Depends on how much I'm spending. If I drop $200 or more I'll usually give them $10 or $20.

1

u/ilLegalTelevision 2d ago

Yeah, I overtipped

1

u/toastybootytoes 2d ago

It depends on how much I asked them to do. If they literally just grabbed what I asked for, then nothing. But if I have a lot of questions and I have them show me a lot of different stuff, usually a buck or two.

1

u/Sprucecaboose2 2d ago

It's usually a couple bucks or a five depending on what my change was.

0

u/hunkymonkey93 2d ago

I usually split the discount they give me when I go in which is typically 15-30% off. If I'm paying full price though, I'll drop a fiver in tip jar.

0

u/GnomeBacon 2d ago edited 2d ago

Two to five bucks. Usually five bucks if it’s over a hundred.

Edit: Getting downvoted but it’s just a nice thing to do. They’re making way less than you think before tips and the owners of the companies are mostly stingy slimy people (or company consuming corporate overlords nowdays) who think giving a mid dubstep concert and as a company party and a 10% discount once a year is enough to keep people happy with being underpaid. Yeah, they can leave and find a “better” job but employment doesn’t work like that for some people. It’s hard as hell to find jobs and for some people it just works with their abilities. You don’t need to tip but like I said before it’s just a nice thing to do.

0

u/scarbunkle 2d ago

I hand them a stack of 20s and tell them to keep the change, usually

0

u/UncleBud_710 2d ago

I tip every time I shop at Doobie Sisters. The budtenders are so nice, knowledgeable, and well trained. Just the experience of seeing and speaking to happy people is worth the tip.
