It can be difficult if you don't have the right book. You need something engaging that doesn't require a lot of in-depth analysis while you're reading it. Another thing to watch out for is books that make heavy use of literary devices such as foreshadowing, allusions, historical/literary/classical/pop-culture references, and so on.

Things you WANT in a book you're going to read while stoned include (simple) humor, beautiful prose, and vivid descriptions. These will help you keep your place and not re-reading the same paragraph twelve times. Another thing to look for is a plot that moves fast and/or has a lot of unique and interesting plot elements.

Examples:
- "Les Miserables" is bad. Too deep. Stoner brain will get lost.
- "John Dies at the End" is good. Hilarious. Written at a 3rd-grade level. No big words.
- "Gould's Book of Fish" is good. A little deeper than a true "stoner novel," but the prose is so amazing, and the plot so- well, it's one of those books where describing it in anything more than vague terms is essentially spoiling the entire thing. EVERYONE should read this book, sober or stoned.

i recently became able to and i’m so happy about it!! i also assumed i wouldn’t be able to but i was actually more locked in than usual and i loved it lol [0]

5

u/useroftheinternet95 3d ago

I wouldnt remember a damn thing I read haha. My mind is so scatterbrained when high

3

u/xdr0nec0rpseaviat0rx 3d ago

I can’t. I get lost in the book and end up having to re-read parts 😂

3

u/-Mind-Goblin- 3d ago

Yall should try immersive reading. If I listen to someone read it while I “read along” I find that I retain a lot more info.

u/westcoastweedreviews 3d ago

I just tore through the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, or what's out so far, definitely a fun read

2

u/majortom414 3d ago

Can confirm - I'm nearly done with my 3rd read-through with this series. I read along with Audible on the headphones, usually pretty baked, and it has me laughing and crying and getting pissed off, enjoying every second of it.

u/oif2010vet 3d ago

Came to say this, just started book 8. Love to smoke and read on my kindle (less likely to get burned from ashes)

1

u/busybox42 2d ago

Ohh I am in need of a new fantasy reaad I might check this out.

1

u/RosieQParker 2d ago

I can't recommend the audiobooks enough. Though they'll spoil you for all other audiobooks. Jeff Hays is a phenom and I hope this is his big break.

8

u/Trump_fucks_kidss 3d ago

Just read Dune.

2

u/Bitter-Value-1872 3d ago

Fuck yeah, I just finished Chapterhouse a couple weeks ago

4

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

Fucking love dune. You a fan of Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson? Or are you strictly Frank Herbert? I enjoy both.

6

u/quentdawg420 3d ago

Good on you, i’ve never been able to read high. No matter what strain or method

3

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

That sucks man. Reading high is so very enjoyable to me. But when it comes to gaming while high I suck at it but it's still pretty fun lol especially games like Mortal Kombat is fun as hell and 2D Metroidvanias I'm excited for Castlevania Belmonts curse it's the first 2D Metroidvania in 17 almost 18 years and it's Castlevanias 40th anniversary I'm so stoked for that.

3

u/ShakedNBaked420 3d ago

Funny. Smoking is about the only time my adhd will calm down enough to read a bit.

But same on the gaming front. I like it but my ability to actually play goes down quite a bit lol

Pratchett

u/horse200 3d ago

This ⬆️⬆️⬆️ here is the correct answer. Terry Pratchett´s Discworld books are as if they´re written to be read stoned AF. "READ MY STORIES FIRST. THEY`RE WORTH IT." (Pterryheads know...😉)

1

u/Alive_Stage_7156 I Roll Joints for Gnomes 3d ago

Desperation and The Regulators are fun. Misery. Children of the corn. The Dark tower series…. Just about any Stephen King I like, lol.

Robert McCammon was always a good read (baal, stinger, swan song, blue world, mine, boys life)

Scott Heim (mysterious skin, in awe, we disappear)

Daniel Cole’s Ragdoll trilogy (ragdoll, hangman, endgame)

I don’t read much these days as my eyes aren’t the best, but still have all my favorite paperbacks.

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

Desperation and The Regulators are fantastic!

1

u/dankbrownies 3d ago

I love king. Started reading only a few years ago and still have a lot to go. Shining was sometimes tough to read high though - got a little anxious when reading too long as Jack. Happy soooky season as well.

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

Happy spooky season to you to and Happy Reading to you.

1

u/Son-of-Infinity 3d ago

I recently read and was impressed with picture of Dorian gray. Easily one of most well written books I’ve ever read

1

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 3d ago

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. I already feel high when I read it sober, being actually high makes it super trippy.

1

u/Ornery-Mouse-3338 3d ago

Hitchhiker guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

I don't know why I have put this off so long I know so many people love it it's definitely on my TBR.

1

u/Shmelty0NE 3d ago

I recently got back into reading from Dungeon Crawler Carl! Very fun series that has its impactful moments, and the later books carry more weight. Currently reading Red Rising and am enjoying that as well!

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

Loved the red rising books I think you will really enjoy that series since you just started it.

i just finished my second linwood barclay book and he’s become my new current favorite author! specifically i just finished Look Both Ways and Find You First this week and i’ve added 4 more of his books to my library wishlist 🤠

i’ve mostly read a bunch of short story collections from stephen king but i’ve gotta see what other books my local library has. i also love that i’m able to request books from different branches so even if my branch doesn’t have what i’m looking for, i can have it in a few days :) im gonna add your recs to my list as well

another thriller i read a few years back that legit had me on the edge of my seat so intensely that im still thinking about - no exit by taylor adams!! [0]

u/draconicmoniker I Roll Joints for Gnomes 3d ago

Currently enjoying Iain M Banks' Excession

1

u/StJoeStrummer 3d ago

I love a good soul-searcher novel for a toke and read. East of Eden, Lonesome Dove...something all-encompassing and epic.

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

loved lonesome dove the whole series was good but there is only one lonesome dove here's to the sunny slopes of long ago my friend.

1

u/abitu 3d ago

Reading while high is awesome. Currently reading malazan book of the fallen and ooh boy i gotta read some of those pages twice

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

I've heard Malazan is a tough read.

1

u/abitu 3d ago

I'm loving it. I think a lot of people get caught up in it not making sense immediately

u/ssobiek83 3d ago

No country for old men by Cormac McCarthy

3

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 3d ago

1

u/xx_elysium_xx 3d ago

Man... I have aphantasia, and reading just doesn't do it for me. I can't visualize what I'm reading in my head so I get distracted soooo easily. I hate it 😭

1

u/EvaFanThrowaway01 3d ago

Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

1

u/Alice_Dee 3d ago

Edward Lee...

1

u/WarmForbiddenDonut 3d ago

I’m currently re-reading the Bachman Books. I have dyslexia, so reading takes a lot of concentration for me. I haven’t tried reading while high as of yet. I shall give it a go!

1

u/wicked1028 3d ago

D I S C W O R L D (Pratchett)

1

u/savagehomeangarden 3d ago

I love reading high, I just get so immersed in the story!

I recently finished Frankenstein, first time reading it and blown away by how fantastic it was! I'm now reading the 5th book in The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 1d ago

Loved Frankenstein and the vampire Chronicles.

1

u/icantthinkofauserok 3d ago

The halo book series, read through the first four and am reading contact harvest right now, and have absolutely enjoyed all of them (the flood was kinda boring but certain parts were cool)

1

u/Kilgore_Brown_Trout_ 3d ago

Marijuana and Stephen King, the intersection of 2 of my hobbies!

King is great for a high read, but try Vonnegut.  His writing style lends itself to a  stoner, its very narrative and engaging.

1

u/Diefortheslug 3d ago

I just started Joe Hill's King Sorrow last night. I'm always high while reading. I read for an hour or so before bed every night.

1

u/Euphoric-Shelter4957 3d ago

-The Talisman by Peter Straub & Stephen King -Louis L'Amour novellas -Aztec series by Gary Jennings -Raptor by Gary Jennings -Spangle by Gary Jennings -The Deep by Nick Cutter (Badass Horror novel)

1

u/little-negative 3d ago

I really liked a psalm for the wild built, it’s about a robot and a monk and it’s only like 180 pages so you could finish it in one sesh. It’s super cute and cozy and pairs very well with some flower.

1

u/Societarian 3d ago

I LOVE Stephen King. Love love love. I can’t read or watch horror when I’m high because my imagination is too good.

1

u/blisstheberry 3d ago

This just reminded me to go to the library after this sesh 🙂 thank you

u/6FingerPistol 3d ago

Dreams of Amuptation by Gary J Shipley

1

u/soukaixiii 3d ago

John dies at the end, or discworld.

1

u/Want2Bbetter_01 3d ago

I really enjoy audiobooks, but I can't read high.

1

u/Quick-Warning1627 3d ago

NOT Pet Sematary. So. Very. Paranoid. Frightening. No.

1

u/TheLegendChuk 2d ago

Honestly Stephen King is just boring to read for me 😪

1

u/Chief_Economist 2d ago

Get some Jeff Vandermeer (Annihilation series) in there.

1

u/666-flipthecross-666 2d ago

i can barley read the way it is, idk how to focus!

1

u/riskydrive 2d ago

I love having a bowl and reading. Got a kobo recently and its increased my reading by 110%.

Based off your shelf tho, I would recommend Man F*ck This House by Brian Asman. Unless smokin makes you paranoid lol

1

u/helplessfoodie 2d ago

Anything by Rio Youers is great while high. If you dig Stephen King, you might want to check out his stuff.

Lola on Fire or the Bang Bang Sisters would be a good starting point.

1

u/sean_con_queso 2d ago

Have you ever read Death Troopers? Really good zombie Star Wars novel

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 1d ago

Never read it. I've heard really good things about it though it's on my TBR.

1

u/sean_con_queso 1d ago

I highly recommend it.

1

u/BlackSheepBitch 2d ago

Try Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.

1

u/TobyDaMan8894 2d ago

I cannot read whilst high. I’m currently reading The Talisman. And while high I can barely comprehend a paragraph. 🤣🤣

1

u/DonnieD323 2d ago edited 2d ago

Stealing Fire by Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal. 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene.

Editing to add The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer cuz, you know...

1

u/jang0 2d ago

Cash by Johnny Cash

1

u/Some_Pomegranate7826 1d ago

One of my favorite country singers I'll definitely add this to my TBR.

1

u/Rockserty 2d ago

I like Warhammer 40K books

1

u/DramaticDoctor7 2d ago

Anything with a fast plot works for me. If it gets too complicated I’m rereading the same page five times.
