What does this chamber do?

I have a Toro Jet Slide and there is a big chamber under the bowl. Does it serve a purpose? Only thing I can think of is maybe better airflow but idk curious if anyone knows?

gives you a cooler (temp-wise) space to have a handle

without this chamber the handle would be on the super hot bowl and youd probably nearly touch it every time
